Fire Blackens Land in South-Central Nebraska and Sandhills

fireA wildfire has blackened about 20 square miles of land in the western Nebraska Sandhills.

Grant County Sheriff Mike Roth says the blaze started in Grant County around noon Wednesday and stretched into Arthur County. At least 10 agencies fought the flames for more than seven hours.

No injuries have been reported, nor any damage to buildings.

Another blaze was reported Tuesday afternoon in south-central Nebraska. Authorities say sparks from a passing train ignited fires along an eight-mile stretch east of Harvard. About 80 firefighters responded, and farmers used their tractors and discs to deny fuel to the flames.

No injuries or building damage have been reported.

Nebraskan Who Took Long Test Drive Sentenced for Theft in Iowa

gavel-and-scaleCOUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — A Nebraskan who took a long test drive in a vehicle from an Iowa dealer has been sentenced for theft.

28-year-old Michael Detty, of Lincoln, pleaded guilty. He was sentenced Monday to five years in prison.

An arrest affidavit says Detty took a sport utility vehicle from Fleming Motors in Council Bluffs on Jan. 14. He called a couple hours later to say he was going to pick up his father and have lunch. A Fleming salesman asked Detty to bring back the SUV.

The affidavit says the SUV was found four days later in Urbandale, about 115 miles away.

Board OKs Permit Changes to Allow New Omaha Shooting Range

shooting range targetOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha Planning Board vote means the city may build an outdoor shooting range at the Public Safety Training Center.

The board approved changes Wednesday to the permit that governs use of the site. Last month the City Council changed an ordinance that barred outdoor shooting at the center, which sits on the city’s northwest side.

Officials have said the range is needed so officers can train with rifles in an outdoor environment that simulates job conditions. But several area residents balked at the idea, citing concerns about noise and safety and what they said was a city promise years ago not to allow an outdoor range at the center.

The council vote followed negotiations that led to an agreement that addressed neighborhood concerns.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The new chancellor of the University of Nebraska’s Lincoln campus has been selected from within the university system’s ranks.

Ronnie Green was named Wednesday as UNL’s new chancellor. He previously served as NU’s vice president for agriculture and natural resources and is UNL’s Harlan vice chancellor of the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

The university began the search for a new chancellor last spring after Chancellor Harvey Perlman announced his plan to leave the office and return to the law school faculty.

Green grew up in Virginia and received bachelor and master’s degrees in animal science from Virginia Tech and Colorado State University, respectively. He completed his doctorate jointly at the University of Nebraska and the USDA-ARS U.S. Meat Animal Research Center in animal breeding and genetics in 1988.

The attack reportedly took place around 9:15 a.m. Wednesday at the Lincoln Correctional Center.

The Department of Correctional Services says the inmate struck the employee without provocation after the employee told the inmate to leave the area. Nearby officers helped subdue the inmate and control the situation.

The staff member who was assaulted declined medical treatment. Another staff member who helped subdue the inmate was taken to a local hospital as a precaution and released.

The department is withholding all of the names until the investigation is complete. At least three other corrections staff members have been assaulted since March 1.

Road Rage Incident Leads to Felonies for NP Man

A North Platte man is facing felony charges following an alleged road rage incident on Tuesday afternoon.

At around 1:30 p.m., officers with the North Platte Police Department responded to a disturbance in a parking lot in the 1800 block of East 4th Street.

Officers met with a 19-year-old male and several witnesses who alleged that the male pulled onto East 4th Street in his vehicle, in front of a vehicle driven by Brian Johnson.

It was reported that Johnson began tailgating the victim, and both vehicles eventually pulled into the parking lot.

According to Investigator John Deal, Johnson approached the driver of the other vehicle and produced a knife and began making threats.

After a short time, Deal says witnesses reported that Johnson left the scene and went to a nearby parking lot, where they observed him place the knife under his vehicle.

As the officers were talking to the victim and witnesses, Johnson drove by the scene and was stopped by an officer.

The knife was located in plain view inside the vehicle, and Deal said it matched the description given by the victim and witnesses.

Johnson was placed under arrest and charged with felony terroristic threats and use of a weapon to commit a felony.  He was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.
