Lincoln’s nonpartisan mayoral election: 2 women, 2 parties

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – A Democrat and a Republican are the final two candidates in the officially nonpartisan race to be Lincoln’s next mayor.

Republican Cyndi Lamm and Democrat Leirion Gaylor Bird were the two top vote-getters in Tuesday’s primary. The general election for mayor and city council is scheduled for May 7.

City elections are nonpartisan, but the political parties work to get their candidates elected to both the mayor’s office and the council.

Lamm says she’s looking forward to a spirited race. Gaylor Baird says she’s grateful for all the people who made calls, knocked on doors, made donations and helped her primary campaign.

Both women are members of the Lincoln City Council.

One of them will be replacing Chris Beutler, who has been mayor for 12 years.

Displaced renters seek to recoup their money after flooding

BELLEVUE, Neb. (AP) – Many displaced residents who were renting homes in a suburban Omaha community along the Missouri River say they’re lacking answers or help from their landlord after 195 houses took on floodwaters that nearly reached their ceilings.

The Omaha World-Herald reports that several Bellevue residents forced to evacuate the Paradise Lakes rental homes have contacted Legal Aid of Nebraska about recouping unused rent or security deposits. The community’s homes were declared uninhabitable following massive flooding that swept through the Midwest last month.

Natalie Littleton says Legal Aid advised her to send Paradise Lakes a certified letter requesting her money. She says the company is demanding that she remove her possessions from the home to be eligible for refunds.

The property website says the office won’t answer questions until damages are assessed.

We will continue to update you on further road closings.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

In what is likely to be a common theme over the next 36 hours, the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) has announced more road closures in Western Nebraska.

According to a news release from NDOT, US Highway 30 is now closed to westbound traffic at Big Springs and Interstate 80 is now closed from the Wyoming border to Interstate 76 in both directions.

Road closures will likely continue as lodging and other accommodations become full or unavailable due to the winter storm.

Travel is not advised. Road conditions are always available at www.511.nebraska.gov.

We will keep you advised of further road closings.

1 property tax measure stalls; package still taking shape

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — One of Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts’ property tax proposals has stalled in a legislative committee, but lawmakers are still working on a package to address the complaints of farmers, ranchers, and homeowners.

The governor’s proposed constitutional amendment didn’t get enough support Wednesday to advance out of the Revenue Committee. It would have prevented local government revenue from growing by more than 3 percent annually.

The package stalled on a 4-2 vote, with two senators not voting. At least five votes were needed.

Another bill proposed by Ricketts advanced out of committee on a 6-2 vote, but no senator has designated it as a priority so it’s unlikely to be debated. That bill would have required the state to commit at least $275 million a year to a property tax credit.

Huskers’ Washington arraigned in Calif. on sex video charges

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Nebraska running back Maurice Washington made his first court appearance on charges of texting a former girlfriend a video of her having sex with two other people.

Washington did not enter pleas in Santa Clara County Superior Court on Wednesday after being arraigned on a felony count of possessing a video or photograph of a person under 18 who is engaging in or simulating sexual conduct and a misdemeanor count of distributing that video without consent, leading to the person suffering emotional distress.

Washington, who is free on $35,000 bail, is accused of obtaining the video from one of the participants and sending it to the girl in March 2018.

Washington has been a limited participant in spring practice, and coach Scott Frost said he won’t play in the spring game Saturday.

Police arrest 3 in Sunday stabbing death of Omaha man

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Police say they’ve arrested three people in the stabbing death of another man in Omaha.

Police say in a news release Wednesday that 30-year-old Ryan Jones-Kellogg, of Omaha, has been arrested in the Sunday death of 25-year-old Dylan Kenney, of Omaha. Jones-Kellogg is charged in a warrant with second-degree murder.

Earlier in the day, police say they also arrested 27-year-old Caleb Bealer and 26-year-old Denzel Gaines on suspicion of being accessories to the killing.

Officers sent early Sunday morning to check a call about a stabbing on the city’s east side found Kenney, who had several stab wounds in his chest. He died later at Nebraska Medical Center.

‘Beatrice Six’ sales tax bill advances to final vote

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – A bill that would let a rural Nebraska county raise its sales tax to pay off a $28.1 million legal debt is headed to a final vote in the Legislature.

Lawmakers gave it second-round approval Wednesday after defeating an amendment that would have given voters a chance to reject the increase.

The current bill allows a two-thirds majority of the Gage County Board of Supervisors to approve a half-cent sales tax increase, which could only be used to pay six people wrongfully convicted in a 1985 Beatrice murder.

The Beatrice Six spent years in prison for the death of 68-year-old Helen Wilson until DNA evidence exonerated them in 2008.

The bill is designed to help farmers who are a minority in the county but pay most of the property taxes.

Bill to shield Nebraska farmers from nuisance suits advances

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – A bill that would expand protections for Nebraska farmers against public nuisance lawsuits has advanced in the Legislature despite objections that it could infringe on neighbors’ property rights.

Lawmakers gave the measure first-round approval Wednesday with a 31-7 vote.

Sen. Dan Hughes, a Venango farmer, says the bill would help farmers who want to install chicken houses or hog confinements. Farmers would have to comply with local zoning ordinances and use “reasonable techniques” to keep dust, noise, insects and odors to a minimum.

Opponents say the bill is vague and doesn’t do enough to protect neighbors who might find themselves next to a hog confinement. They say that some counties don’t have local ordinances to address those concerns.

Two more votes are needed before the bill goes to the governor.

UPDATED: No school for NP Public Schools tomorrow

Update 4/10/19

North Platte Catholic Schools have been added to the growing list of area schools that will be closed on Thursday. Don’t forget to check out our Closings and Cancelations Page often for updates.

UPDATE:

The Nebraska State Patrol announced that Interstate 80 will not be closed at this time.  They say there may be more closure later this evening.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The impending winter storm is prompting area school officials to cancel school for Thursday, and state officials to close Interstate 80.

With the National Weather Service forecasting 60 mph wind gusts and anywhere from eight to 24 inches of snow across our area, officials aren’t taking any chances.

The Nebraska Department of Transportation announced that Interstate 80 westbound will be closed at Ogallala at 4:00 p.m. CDT, on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, students at North Platte High School ended their day by hearing an announcement that school had been canceled for Thursday.

The Nebraska State Patrol is discouraging travel and is encouraging motorists that do have to travel to prepare a winter survival kit.
