Online court records say 17-year-old Noah Molczyk on Monday was given 20 to 30 years in prison. He’d pleaded guilty after Lancaster County prosecutors reduced the assault and weapons charges. The records also say Molczyk waived his right to try to move the case to juvenile court.

Molczyk turns 18 on Dec. 29 and can enter a Nebraska prison for adults then. The boy he shot Jan. 22 was 14.

Nebraska authorities find more additional human remains

DAKOTA CITY, Neb. (AP) — Human remains found over the weekend show a Nebraska man who was pronounced dead after his severed arm and leg were found in a car had been shot in the head.

The additional remains were found Saturday in a creek about four miles from the farm house where the first body parts were found last week.

Authorities have charged 25-year-old Andres Surber and 18-year-old Misael Galvan-Hernandez with first-degree murder in the death of 41-year-old Kraig Kubik.

Authorities say Surber and Galvan-Hernandez went to Kubik’s trailer home Tuesday and demanded that he give them a car that once belonged to Surber. On Wednesday, investigators found a large amount of blood in Kubik’s yard.

Surber and Galvan-Hernandez were being held in lieu of $2.5 million bond.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The mayor of Lincoln, an artist, a philosophy student and other residents have come together to discuss how the creation of creative spaces improves health and well-being.

The Placemaking for Wellbeing discussion took place Sunday.

Mayor Chris Beutler says the city is making an effort to collect creative ideas and create spaces where people can come together and be inspired. According to Beutler, the connection between the arts and the well-being of a community is often lost.

The mayor and event organizer Nick Hernandez agree that people contributing their creative ideas has a positive impact on personal health and the health of the city.

Omaha City Council proposal seeks tax commission disbandment

omahaOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Omaha City Council president says he wants the Legislature to disband the Nebraska Tax Equalization and Review Commission or add oversight by elected officials.

The full council is scheduled to vote Tuesday on Council president Ben Gray’s proposal. The proposal is in response to a commission order earlier this year for Douglas County to adjust tax valuation in two areas of the county.

On the council, Gray represents northeast Omaha, where values decreased on about 20,000 properties. Officials have said they are concerned that the decreases will depress home values, discourage renovations by homeowners and cause people to panic sell their homes for less than what they’re worth.

The commission has increased values for about 78,000 residential properties in central and west Omaha.

GOP looks to reassert Nebraska’s conservative traditions

GOPLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska’s upcoming general election might seem like a low-key affair with no U.S. Senate or governor’s races on the ballot, but Republicans view it as a chance to reassert the state’s conservative leanings.

GOP leaders are campaigning hard to reinstate the death penalty, oust the state’s sole Democratic congressman and elect a more conservative Legislature.

Conservatives, including Gov. Pete Ricketts, have argued that lawmakers were out of touch with their constituents when they abolished the death penalty and allowed driver’s licenses for certain youths who entered the country illegally but were granted lawful presence under the Obama administration.
