A North Platte man is facing several charges after police say he drove drunk, crashed his car, then fled leaving his 2-year-old child alone in the vehicle.

At around 2:46 a.m., on November 6, officers with the North Platte Police Department responded to the report of a vehicle accident at the intersection of F and Chestnut Streets.

Officers arrived and found a gray 2005 Nissan Altima that had struck a yield sign and became high-centered.

As officers investigated further, they found a two-year-old child in the car, but say there were not any adults in the area.  Police say the child was unrestrained at the time but was uninjured.  Investigator John Deal said it is unknown if the child was restrained at the time of the accident.

Police soon learned that the vehicle was registered to 30-year-old Daniel Endicott.

After a brief search, Deal says Endicott was located, passed out, at a residence in the 700 block of South Vine Street.  He says there were numerous signs that Endicott was under the influence of alcohol.

Endicott was transported to Great Plains Health, where police say a blood draw confirmed that he was drunk.  The also determined that he was the father of the child that was found in the vehicle and had been driving the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Endicott was placed under arrest and charged with leaving the scene of an accident, driving under the influence of liquor and child abuse.

Further investigation revealed that Endicott had also rear-ended a vehicle in the 100 block of South Sycamore, earlier in the night.  As a result, police filed an additional charge of leaving the scene of an accident.

The child was released to family members.

Endicott was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.

Nebraska woman on probation for high school assault arrested in fire

Sara Piccolo

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A 19-year-old woman on probation for stabbing a classmate in a Lincoln high school bathroom in 2013 is accused of starting a fire in a Metropolitan Community College bathroom.

Sarah Piccolo was arrested Saturday on suspicion of arson. She hasn’t made an initial court appearance, and online court records don’t list the case yet so it’s not clear if she has a lawyer.

Firefighters determined that the fire in the bathroom Saturday morning was set intentionally.

Piccolo was sentenced to five years of probation for using a hunting knife and a claw hammer to attack a 17-year-old girl at Lincoln Pius X High School in October 2013. The girl was hospitalized.

Piccolo was 16 in 2013 but was being prosecuted as an adult.

Uncertainty with executions looms over death penalty vote

lethal-injectionLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Voters will have an opportunity Tuesday to reverse an action taken by the Legislature and reinstate Nebraska’s death penalty, but moving forward with executions could take years.

Nebraska’s last execution was in 1997, using the electric chair, and the state has never carried one out using its current three-drug lethal injection protocol. Even though several executions have been scheduled, legal and logistical problems have kept the state from using lethal injection before the necessary drugs expired.

Death penalty opponents say the state will never execute another inmate without shrouding its process in secrecy. Supporters say a strong showing of support from voters will increase pressure on public officials to find a workable solution.

Hastings home heavily damaged after man uses torch to light cigarette

hastings-fire-departmentHASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — A home in Hastings has sustained significant fire damage after a man used a butane torch to light a cigarette.

The fire happened Saturday afternoon.

Hastings Fire and Rescue Chief Kent Gilbert says the home was engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived. The home was gutted by the blaze.

Gilbert said the man who started the fire escaped the house safely, but then was hurt trying to re-enter the home through a window. He says the injuries were likely caused by broken glass.

Average gasoline price up nearly a penny to $2.26 a gallon

gas-guageCAMARILLO, Calif. (AP) — The average price of gasoline in the U.S. inched up about a penny over the past two weeks to $2.26 for regular grade.

Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg said Sunday that the price rise came despite a dramatic drop in crude oil prices.

Lundberg says refiners and retailers kept the margins from oil price cuts to recover from previous losses. She also says a big gasoline tax hike in New Jersey helped push up the national average.

The Lundberg Survey found the average price of midgrade gasoline remained at $2.54 a gallon while premium rose a cent to $2.76.

The highest average price for regular gas in the contiguous U.S. was $2.83 in Los Angeles. The lowest was $1.84 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The average price for diesel was $2.46.

Nebraska game officials: Pronghorns being illegally killed

Nebraska_game_and_parksKIMBALL, Neb. (AP) — Conservation officers in western Nebraska are looking for those responsible for illegally killing several pronghorns and leaving their carcasses to rot.

In north-central Nebraska case, officers are looking for the person who killed a cow elk on Oct. 14 or Oct. 15 and left to rot near a road northeast of Valentine.
