Caretaker gets 20-25 years for death of Omaha 4-year-old

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) âThe caretaker for an Omaha 4-year-old whose frigid, plastic-wrapped body was hidden under basement stairs has been sentenced to prison.

On Wednesday Douglas County District Judge Greg Schatz gave Chelsey Cook 20 to 25 years. She’d been found guilty in June of intentional child abuse resulting in the death of Alicia Morrow.

Prosecutors have said Cook knew Alicia needed medical attention but did not call 911 because there was a warrant out for her arrest. An autopsy showed the girl died of hypothermia at Cook’s home, where her body was found Jan. 5. Cook didn’t put more clothes on Alicia to warm her in the house, which officials have said was frigid.

Alicia’s mother, Lakisha Morrow, has said Cook offered to care for Alicia when Morrow was homeless.

The Dakota County Sheriff’s Office says the accident occurred a little before 12:30 p.m. Tuesday on Nebraska Highway 35 about a mile northeast of Emerson. The Sheriff’s Office says an eastbound vehicle sideswiped a westbound van and then spun out of control when it hit water running over the roadway and struck another westbound vehicle.

The eastbound vehicle’s driver was killed. The Sheriff’s Office identified him as 21-year-old Michael Schmidt, who lived in Pender. One of the other drivers was hospitalized and the third driver was not injured.

The collisions are being investigated.

Average ACT score dips among Nebraska high school graduates

testingLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — This year’s Nebraska high school graduates scored slightly lower on the ACT exam than those who graduated in 2015, but the drop is nowhere close to the plunge the state could see in the future.

A report released by the ACT organization Wednesday shows that the statewide average composite score for the Class of 2016 was 21.4, down from 21.5 the previous year.

Nebraska Commissioner of Education Matt Blomstedt attributed the dip to “natural variability.”

The state could see larger drops after the Nebraska Department of Education moves forward on lawmakers’ plan for all high school juniors to take either the SAT or ACT beginning this school year. Blomstedt said he’d recommend which test he prefers to the State Board of Education next week.

In 2015 and 2016, 88 percent of Nebraska high school graduates took the ACT.

Ford recalls over 88K vehicles due to stalling problem

fordDETROIT (AP) — Ford is recalling more than 88,000 cars and SUVs in North America because the engines can stall without warning due to a fuel pump problem.

The recall covers certain Ford Taurus and Police Interceptor sedans, Ford Flex wagons, Lincoln MKS sedans and Lincoln MKT SUVs from the 2013 through 2015 model years. All have 3.5-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engines.

Ford says the fuel pump control modules can fail, and the engines may not start, or they could stall, leaving drivers without the ability to restart them. The company says it’s not aware of any crashes or injuries from the problem.

Dealers will replace the control module at no cost to owners.

It could easily be argued that nobody has been bigger in Country Music than Chris Stapleton since he barnstormed the 2015 CMA awards, sweeping Album of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year, and New Artist of the Year, the first artist to ever accomplish the feat.

Now, Stapleton is poised to barnstorm the 53rd NEBRASKAland DAYS in North Platte, where he’ll headline the closing night of the US Cellular Summer Jam Concert Series on June 24th, 2017.

Stapleton capped off the year with four nominations at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards—Album of the Year, Best Country Album (“Traveller”), Best Country Song and Best Country Solo Performance.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling to get Chris to North Platte,” says NLD Executive Director David Fudge. “After the year he’s had, everybody was trying to secure a spot on his 2017 tour. It’s real kick to have NEBRASKAland DAYS on that list.”

Stapleton elevates what was already a strong 2017 lineup, with Alan Jackson and Dwight Yoakum announced last week. One act remains to be announced, an opening spot in front of Stapleton.

Tickets will go on sale to Fan Club and NLD Sustaining Members on September 1 at 9 am. Public Sale will begin on September 6 at 9 am. As in years past, there will be an early bird combination special on GA tickets and reserved seating. Fans can get General Admission for both shows for just $108 ($54 per night) until the end of September. New for 2017 is the creation of a second “Party Pit” behind the Golden Circle. Circle ticket quantities will be limited, and will be priced at $139 a piece per night, while “Party Pit” tickets will be $79 a piece per night.
