Nebraska schools forgo open showers for private stalls

communal-showerOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Open showers in school locker rooms are going to the wayside as Nebraska schools build more private stalls.

The trend of phasing out gang-style showers began decades ago. Today, it could ease privacy concerns of critics who oppose allowing transgender students to use the locker rooms of their choice.

With an increasing number of private showers and students who say they don’t shower at school, the likelihood students will have encounters decreases.

In recent years, at least two Nebraska high schools — in Crete and Elkhorn — and one middle school in the Papillion-La Vista district were built with only private stalls. Kearney’s new high school recently opened with a combination of private stalls and communal showers.

Thrill-ride accidents spark new demands for regulation

consumer-product-safetyNASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — In some parts of the U.S., the thrill rides that whirl kids around are checked by state inspectors before customers climb on. But in other places, they aren’t required to get the once-over.

A boy’s death on a Kansas water slide and a Ferris wheel accident that injured three girls in Tennessee have focused attention on what experts call an alarming truth: Regulation varies greatly by state.

The industry has lobbied against federal oversight for decades. The Consumer Product Safety Commission doesn’t regulate rides at permanent parks. It oversees only traveling carnival rides. Even then, federal investigators respond only after accidents.

Whether a ride has to be inspected before thrill-seekers hop on depends on what state it’s in. Mississippi, Alabama, Nevada, South Dakota, Wyoming and Utah have no laws at all requiring inspections.

A pot of money: Oregon collects $25.5M in marijuana taxes

marijuana-jointSALEM, Ore. (AP) — Oregon has processed $25.5 million in tax payments from recreational marijuana from January through the end of July.

The state’s Department of Revenue says medical marijuana dispensaries were required to file their second-quarter returns for recreational marijuana by Aug. 1.

Oregonians legalized recreational marijuana in late 2014.

But it can only be sold by medical marijuana dispensaries until the Oregon Liquor Control Commission finalizes rules for the new industry. That’s expected to happen by next year.

Medical marijuana dispensaries started collecting a 25 percent tax on their recreational marijuana sales in January.

Anticipated state revenue from recreational marijuana through June 2017 was recently quadrupled by Oregon’s Legislative Revenue Office.

The expected amount rose from $8.4 million to $35 million.

Recreational marijuana is illegal in 46 states and under federal law.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A woman has pleaded no contest to helping her boyfriend dump his mother’s body in southeast Omaha.

Gabriela Guevara pleaded no contest Monday to being an accessory by helping her boyfriend, Roberto Martinez-Marinero, transport and dump his mother’s body in 2015.

Martinez-Marinero pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his mother, 45-year-old Jesus Ismenia Marinero, and his 4-year-old half brother, Josue Ramirez-Marinero. He was sentenced to life in prison.

After killing his mother, Martinez-Marinero took her two youngest children in an attempt to eliminate witnesses. He dumped his then-11-month-old half brother in a La Vista dumpster. The child was found later, bruised but otherwise uninjured.

He threw the older boy off a bridge to his death.

Guevara will be sentenced in October.

Nebraska among first states in new law enforcement program

police-lights-redLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska is one of the nation’s first states to take advantage of a new federal training program designed to improve relationships between officers and their communities.

Agencies including the Nebraska State Patrol and the Omaha and Lincoln police departments have already started running officers through the Blue Courage program with help from a federal grant. Gov. Pete Ricketts and law enforcement leaders touted the program during a news conference Monday at the Capitol.

The U.S. Bureau of Justice Assistance has provided assistance for the program in Nebraska, Washington state, Arizona and Baltimore County, Maryland.

Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center Director Bill Muldoon says the program is designed to reduce cynicism among officers, remind them of their impact on communities and emphasize a commitment to public service.
