Lightning strikes, kills man in Colorado during storm

lightning-strikeFORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) — Authorities say a 45-year-old man was struck by lightning and killed in Colorado.

Chad Trover of Arvada died Friday during a severe thunderstorm northwest of Fort Collins.

Larimer County Chief Deputy Coroner Dianne Fairman says Trover was staying at a cabin in the mountainous Crystal Lakes area and was standing between trees when the lightning hit.

She says first responders temporarily revived Trover and he was taken to a hospital, where he died about six hours later.

Colorado is one of the top states for lightning deaths over the past decade. Last month, another man was struck and killed by lightning on a suburban Denver golf course.

Report: Alligator bit boy’s head during Disney attack

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The father of a toddler killed by an alligator at Walt Disney World last June reached into the animal’s mouth in an attempt to free his son’s head from the reptile’s jaws.

A final report on the death released Monday by Florida’s wildlife agency says that the 7-foot alligator bit 2-year-old Lane Graves’ head as the boy bent down at the edge of a lagoon at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission report says the boy died from a crushing bite and drowning.

The report says Lane did nothing to provoke the alligator and that the death is classified as a predatory attack.

The report says the alligator may have had a diminished fear of people by being in an area with lots of humans.

Three people are dead after a Sunday evening crash on Interstate 80, just east of the Hershey exit.

At around 6:30 p.m., law enforcement and emergency personnel responded to an injury accident at Mile Marker 166, two miles east of the Hershey exit.

According to witness reports, a semi was traveling eastbound when it crossed the median and collided head-on with a westbound semi.  The crash caused a fiery explosion that could be seen from North Platte.

The Nebraska State Patrol says three people were killed as a result of the crash but did not release any more details. A car was also involved in the accident but only sustained minor damage. Its occupants were not injured.

The crash forced the closure of I-80 from North Platte to Sutherland.

The Patrol says the crash remains under investigation.  We will have additional details when they are available.

USDA to survey Nebraska farmers in September on grain crops

USDALINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The U.S. Agriculture Department will contact more than 2,500 Nebraska farmers next month to learn more about this year’s small grain crops.

The USDA surveys farmers to build estimates of production and yield for every Nebraska county and the state.

The crops included in the survey are wheat, oats, barley and rye

Dean Groskurth with the Northern Plains unit of the USDA statistics operation says farmers should fill out the survey to ensure their area’s data is accurate.

Gas prices up by half a cent to $2.17 a gallon

gas-cardCAMARILLO, Calif. (AP) — The average price of gasoline in the U.S. is up by over half a cent to $2.17 a gallon for regular grade.

Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg said Sunday higher crude oil prices are causing refiners and retailers to bump up their prices.

Still, the average price is 54 cents lower than a year ago.

The Lundberg Survey found the average price of midgrade unleaded is $2.46 a gallon, and the average price of premium is $2.67 a gallon.

The highest average price for regular gas in the contiguous U.S. is $2.67 a gallon in San Francisco. The lowest is $1.81 in Tucson, Arizona.

The U.S. average diesel price is $2.35 per gallon, up a quarter of a penny from two weeks ago.
