Nebraska Guns Bill Used in Janssen Fundraising Message

Senator Charlie Jannsen
Senator Charlie Jannsen

(AP) — A bill that seeks to nullify federal gun restrictions in Nebraska is being used to help state Sen. Charlie Janssen raise money in his campaign for governor.

Janssen’s campaign staff sent a fundraising email to supporters on Thursday, calling attention to legislation that the Republican lawmaker sponsored this year.

Janssen has courted gun owners as he competes in the GOP primary. He spoke recently to the Nebraska Firearms Owners Association.

The email came as the Republican-led Missouri Legislature prepares to override Gov. Jay Nixon’s veto of a bill that would render federal gun restrictions unenforceable in that state. Opponents have said the bill can’t survive a court challenge.

Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha criticized the Nebraska measure as “preposterous” in a hearing earlier this year.

Tax Time is Here, Don’t Be Late

taxesIt’s everyone’s favorite time of year again…tax time.

Lincoln County Treasurer, Sue Fleck, wants to remind Lincoln County residents that the second half of 2012 Real Estate and Personal Property taxes are delinquent on September 1st.

Fleck said an interest rate of 14% will accrue on all delinquent taxes.

Road Work to Begin on Leota Street

road-workTravel in North Platte may become a bit more cumbersome as crews begin working on a project on Leota Street just west of Jeffers Street..

City officials said Thursday that the project is expected to take around three weeks to complete.

Motorists are urged to use an alternate route during the project.  Officials also ask that extreme caution be used in and around the construction area.

Midwest Hot, Dry Spell Brings Back Drought Worries

Corny_stands(AP) — A growing season that began unusually wet and cold in the Midwest is finishing hot and dry, renewing worries of drought and its impact on crops.

Experts say corn and soybeans may not have enough moisture in dry areas to develop to full weight, which could reduce this year’s harvest.

The weekly Drought Monitor report released Thursday shows that lack of rain has caused drought conditions to expand in parts of Illinois, Indiana and Michigan, and most of Minnesota and Wisconsin.

It also shows that abnormally dry conditions have expanded in eastern Iowa and South Dakota. Rain eased drought in portions of northern Nebraska, but much of the western half of the state remain in extreme drought.

Drought also expanded in portions of Texas, Louisiana and southern Arkansas.

1 in 5 Boys Got HPV Vaccination in First Year Recommended

vaccination(AP) — A new report offers a first look at how many boys are getting shots designed to protect girls from cervical cancer. Health officials say the number getting vaccinated so far is a good start.

The HPV vaccine has only been recommended for boys for about two years, and rates are usually low at first for new vaccines. But the government report released Thursday shows about 1 in 5 adolescent boys got at least one of the three vaccine doses last year.

The vaccine protects against human papillomavirus, which can cause cervical cancer in girls and genital warts in both sexes. It was first recommended for girls but hasn’t been all that popular. Health officials expect it to be a hard sell for boys, too.

Lake Ogallala Fish Kill Blamed on Lack of Oxygen

Nebraska_game_and_parks(AP) — The fish kill at Lake Ogallala in western Nebraska has been blamed on low oxygen levels in the water.

Over the weekend people reported seeing dozens of dead trout in the lake and canal below Kingsley Dam near Ogallala.

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission biologist Darrol Eichner says the canal water tested out at 2.5 parts per million on Wednesday. Eichner says the fish need at least three parts per million to survive.

Experts say oxygen depletion usually occurs in summer because warm water holds less dissolved oxygen than cool or cold water.

UNL, USDA Release New Wheat Variety

UNL(AP) — The University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the U.S. Department of Agriculture have released a new wheat variety that was developed for dryland farms.

Husker Genetics Brand Freeman is named for Daniel Freeman, who is recognized as the first person to file for a homestead under the Homestead Act of 1862.

UNL agronomist P. Stephen Baenziger says the wheat variety is particularly well-suited for dryland farmers throughout Nebraska and in states to the north and west.

Varieties developed by the UNL-USDA partnership typically comprise 60 to 65 percent of the wheat grown in Nebraska.

The Freeman variety is not recommended for irrigated production, because other wheat types are better for those conditions.

Nebraska Officials to Ask Businesses About Broadband

Lt. Gov. Lavon Heidemann
Lt. Gov. Lavon Heidemann

(AP) — Nebraska officials want to learn about how businesses are using broadband Internet technology so they can help the companies grow and become more efficient.

Lt. Gov. Lavon Heidemann announced Wednesday that the state is inviting businesses to participate in the new project. The Nebraska Broadband Initiative is launching a statewide survey in early September and giving up to 500 businesses a personalized scorecard.

The scorecards will include ideas on how to better use broadband technologies to earn a better return on the investment. Those businesses will also have the opportunity to work with a business broadband coach.

Businesses interested in participating should contact Jim Keeler, the University of Nebraska’s broadband business manager, at 402-472-4235 or jkeeler8@unl.edu.

Worker Crushed by Truck Axle in Alliance

Alliance_police(AP) — A 46-year-old man has been killed in a workplace accident in western Nebraska.

Alliance authorities say a preliminary autopsy report and investigation show that the death of Juan Vasquez was accidental.

His employer discovered Vasquez’s body in an Alliance garage on Monday afternoon. Police say the Hemingford man was working alone when he was crushed by a large truck axle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
