(AP) — A former western Nebraska police chief has been sentenced to 20 to 24 years for a sexual relationship with a teenage girl.
The Nebraska Attorney General’s Office says former Hemingford police chief Mark Lindburg was sentenced Wednesday in Box Butte County District Court.
The 53-year-old Lindburg initially was charged with first-degree sexual assault and child abuse. In an agreement with prosecutors, Lindburg pleaded no contest last month to one count of attempted first-degree sexual assault of a child, and the child abuse count was dropped.
Lindburg had faced up to 50 years in prison.
An investigation showed Lindburg engaged in sexual interactions with a 15-year-old girl while on duty as Hemingford’s police chief. Investigators said Lindburg had known the girl “as long as she could remember.”
(AP) — A job application is now available for anyone looking to oversee the Nebraska Department of Education.
Officials say the application for Nebraska Education Commissioner is accessible online. The deadline to apply is Oct. 15.
A search committee will interview semi-finalists in November before finalists are named in December. The eight-member State Board of Education will also interview finalists at a public meeting in December.
Roger Breed announced his plans to retire as commissioner earlier this year.
(AP) — Scientists have found a clue to the cause of age-related memory problems. It’s part of the quest to one day tell if those misplaced car keys are just a senior moment or an early warning of something worse.
Researchers at Columbia University Medical Center examined donated human brains, and found a gene in an important memory region quits working properly in older people. It produces less of a key protein.
Then they adjusted levels of that protein in mice, which become forgetful when they age in much the same way that people do. Lower levels of the protein made healthy young rodents perform worse on memory tasks. But boosting the protein made forgetful old mice as sharp as youngsters again.
The research was reported in the journal Science Translational Medicine.
(AP) — Officials say the new Interstate 80 interchange on the east side of Kearney will do far more for the city than just feed tourists to the Great Platte River Road Archway.
The interchange opened Tuesday with fanfare and visitors including Gov. Dave Heineman, U.S. Sen. Deb Fischer and other officials.
The interchange was first sought to stimulate and accommodate city growth. The city for years had but one way off and on the interstate. The new interchange will help the growing city as well as help the city provide emergency services.
Joel Johnson of the archway foundation board says the interchange indeed will help the tourist attraction, which has declared bankruptcy. The route from the longtime Kearney interchange to the archway museum required westbound travelers to double back.

A Utah man got a free night of lodging in North Platte after he was caught with a stolen vehicle.
At around 7:50 p.m. on Tuesday, North Platte Police responded to the Flying J Travel Center at 3400 South Newberry on the report of suspicious activity.
Officers learned that witnesses had seen two subjects unloading their belongings from a newer Jeep with Utah plates. The subjects then left the vehicle unattended.
When Officers arrived, the duo was standing on the east on-ramp of Interstate 80 attempting to hitch hike.
Officers ran a check of the vehicle’s license plate and learned it had been reported stolen from North Salt Lake, Utah.
Following an investigation, Officers determined that 23-year-old Denver Lindsey, of North Salt Lake, had been the driver of the vehicle. Police say the other subject, a transient, had been the passenger.
Officers found probable cause to arrest Lindsey for felony Possession of Stolen Property. He was transported to the Lincoln County Detention Center.
The transient was not cited and was released from the scene. The Jeep remains at the North Platte Police Department impound lot.
(AP) — Dozens of books have already been written about billionaire Warren Buffett investment success, but now a new book explains Buffett’s advice for kids.
The lessons in the book are based on the “Secret Millionaire’s Club” cartoon that features Buffett helping a group of kids learn how to manage the millions they made selling baseball memorabilia they found.
Buffett, who voices his own character in the cartoon, helped the book’s authors decide what to include in “Secret Millionaire’s Club: Warren Buffett’s 26 Secrets to Success in the Business of Life.”
The lessons featured in the book focus on key financial principles and Buffett’s core beliefs, such as the importance of pursuing your passion in life, protecting your reputation, avoiding debt and recovering after mistakes.
The United States Attorney’s office has announced the arrest of 17 people in Ogallala, Brule and surrounding cities in western Nebraska and eastern Colorado.
United States Attorney Deborah Gilg said in a news release that all those arrested have been charged with conspiracy to distribute and possess methamphetamine with the intent to deliver.
The arrests are a result of a long-term investigation by the FBI, Nebraska State Patrol, Ogallala Police Department, North Platte Police Department, CODE Task Force, WING Task Force, Keith County Sheriff’s Office, Keith County Attorney’s Office, Cheyenne County Attorney’s Office, Homeland Security Investigations Division, Deuel County Sheriff’s Office, Phillips County, CO Sheriff’s Office, Hoyoke, CO Police Department, Eastern Colorado Plains Drug Task Force and the United States Attorney’s Office.
Law enforcement seized over three pounds of methamphetamine and $8,000 in U.S. Currency in connection with this investigation.

(AP) — The Food and Drug Administration says a Mexico farm linked to an outbreak of severe stomach illnesses in two states can resume operations because no food safety violations have been found there. The number of people sickened around the country has topped 600.
The FDA said Tuesday that Taylor Farms de Mexico could resume operations after investigators found conditions there “in accordance with known food safety protocols.” The firm shut down voluntarily after its salad mix served at Olive Garden and Red Lobster restaurants was linked to 242 cyclospora infections in Nebraska and Iowa. Similar illnesses in 20 other states were never definitively linked to the farm.
The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it is working with Texas to try and discover the source of more than 250 cyclospora infections there.
