Woman Who Sued NSP for Return of $1 Million Says She Hasn’t Been Paid

state-patrol-logo(AP) — An attorney for a California woman who successfully sued to get back more than $1 million seized during a Nebraska traffic stop says she has not yet been repaid.

Attorney Roger Diamond said Wednesday that Tara Mishra, of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., is due to give birth soon and “could really use that money.”

A Nebraska state trooper seized the money after a March 3 traffic stop on Interstate 80 near North Platte, saying that a police dog determined the presence of drugs on the money. But Mishra proved in court through tax returns that the money is her life savings, earned over years as an exotic dancer.

Officials with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Nebraska did not immediately return messages Wednesday seeking comment on whether the government plans to appeal.

ACLU Wants Nebraska to Surrender Its Supply of Lethal Injection Drug

ACLU(AP) — The ACLU of Nebraska is calling on the state to surrender its supply of a lethal injection drug in the wake of a federal appeals court ruling this week.

The group said Wednesday that it has requested records from the state to see whether Nebraska has obtained any additional drugs since March. As of March, the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services had two batches, one set to expire in May and another in December.

The request followed the appeals court ruling on Tuesday, which said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration shouldn’t have allowed the foreign-made sodium thiopental to be imported without inspection for use in executions.

The ACLU says the ruling makes it unlikely that the state’s existing supply would withstand a legal challenge.

Nebraska Lawmaker to Propose Higher Minimum Wage

Sen. Jeremy Nordquist
Sen. Jeremy Nordquist

(AP) — A state lawmaker says he will propose an increase in Nebraska’s minimum wage when the Legislature convenes next year.

Sen. Jeremy Nordquist of Omaha said Wednesday that he will introduce a bill to raise the rate from its current $7.25 per hour. Nordquist and five other lawmakers released statements calling on the federal government to increase its minimum wage, which is also $7.25 per hour.

The announcement is part of a series actions taking place around the nation on Wednesday, which marks the fourth anniversary of the last minimum wage increase.

Five other Nebraska lawmakers voiced support for a federal increase: Sens. Tanya Cook, Sara Howard, Rick Kolowski and Heath Mello, all of Omaha, and Sen. Ken Haar of Malcolm.

Crop Duster Severs Power Line Near Cozad

crop-duster(AP) — A crop-dusting aircraft has sustained minor damage after severing a power line near Cozad in central Nebraska.

The accident occurred around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Dawson County sheriff’s Sgt. Tim Kostrunek says the plane was spraying a cornfield when it clipped the line. The plane’s damage didn’t keep it from being flown back to its base at the Cozad airport. The pilot wasn’t injured.

A Dawson Public Power District spokeswoman says about 60 customers lost power for a time.

Report Cites Irrigation Value to Nebraska

NE-Farm-Bureau(AP) — A report for the Nebraska Farm Bureau says irrigation was worth $11 billion to the state in agricultural production during the drought last year.

The study released Tuesday was conducted by Decision Innovation Solutions, of Des Moines, Iowa. The study estimated the total impact that irrigated agriculture had on the Nebraska economy in 2012. The economic impact estimates compared Nebraska’s economic activity with and without farmers’ and ranchers’ ability to irrigate last year.

The study also says Nebraska would have had more than 31,000 fewer jobs without irrigation. More than a third of them are outside of direct crop production.

The Nebraska Farm Bureau is an industry group representing more than 56,000 farm and ranch families in the state.

Nebraska Anti-Pipeline Group Plans Training Sessions

keystone(AP) — An anti-pipeline group and some local landowners are setting up training sessions in York that will focus on zoning, spills and emergency response plans.

The session is scheduled to be held between 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Aug. 23 at the York City Auditorium.

Jane Kleeb is director of Bold Nebraska, which opposes the proposed Keystone XL pipeline that would carry Canadian oil through Nebraska and other states to Texas refineries.

Kleeb will open the training by reviewing regulations and resolutions that already have been passed in other jurisdictions as well as some that have not been adopted.

North Platte Man Charged After Fleeing from Deputies

Freedom Triplett

A North Platte man is behind bars after he fled from Deputies in his vehicle.

At around 6:00 am on Tuesday, a Lincoln County Deputy observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Front Street in North Platte.

When the Deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the driver attempted to elude him by driving down an alley and parking in a secluded spot, then fleeing on foot.

Deputies met with residents in the area, but none of them recognized the car or saw anyone running from it.   When Deputies began to tow the vehicle, 31-year-old Freedom Triplett approached them and said that he was the driver.

Triplett told Deputies he was sorry for running just before they placed him under arrest and charged him with Flight to Avoid Arrest.

He was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.

Recall Issued on Salsa Sold by Dollar Tree

dollar-tree(AP) — The maker of salsas sold at Dollar Tree and Deals, Dollar Express and Dollar Bills stores nationwide is recalling the product after large glass pieces were found in some jars.

Olam Tomato Processors Inc. announced the recall Tuesday of its Mild Chunky Salsa with best-by dates of June 2015 and October 2015, and Medium Chunky Salsa with a best by date of July 2015.

Company spokeswoman Roxana Janka says the glass pieces got into the salsa during the beginning of the manufacturing process, when some of the glass jars were damaged. The pieces were not detected by X-rays at the plant because the machines were not calibrated to detect large glass pieces.

The Fresno, Calif.-based company says there have been no reports of injury.
