Ogallala Man Gets Probation, Jail Time for UNK Bomb Threat

Matthew Skinner
Matthew Skinner

KEARNEY, Neb. (AP) — A 19-year-old student convicted of making bomb threats to the University of Nebraska at Kearney has been given probation and jail time.

Matthew Skinner, of Ogallala, was sentenced in Buffalo County Court on Thursday to 90 days in jail and two years of probation. He’d pleaded guilty to attempted threat to use or place a bomb. Court records show prosecutors lowered the original felony charge to a misdemeanor in exchange for Skinner’s plea.

Anonymous threats were posted in September against a residence hall, another building and a library.

A university spokesman wouldn’t discuss any disciplinary action Skinner might face from the student conduct board. Skinner has remained a student at the south-central Nebraska school throughout the court proceedings.

There will be a spring vocal and piano recital April 16 at North Platte Community College. The event is free and open to the public.

It will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the McDonald-Belton Theater on the NPCC South Campus and will be followed by a reception in the fireplace area.

“Students taking applied lessons in some form or another must perform in a recital for their final project,” said Elizabeth Peters, NPCC music instructor. “The recital is different from our concerts, which are all about blend and working together, in that the emphasis is on the individual and blossoming as a solo artist.”

Students will primarily perform solos from musicals, operas and art songs. Selections include: “Getting To Know You” from “The King And I,” “Music Of The Night” from “The Phantom of the Opera” and pieces from the musical “Chicago.”

A range of emotions will be expressed throughout the show.

“Some songs are funny, others are romantic or sad or sung in a foreign language,” said Peters. “It’s going to be a fun night. The audience can definitely expect to be entertained.”

Performers will include those enrolled in the group vocal, applied piano, piano technology and applied voice for music majors and non-majors classes.

The students are: Alleyah Evans, Jade Higgens, Ester Micheva, Kylie Wroot, Walker Baird, Andrew Parish, Bailey Rickertsen, Steven Keltz, Kim Carter, Nikki Schmidt, Autumn Bickel, Katie Roessler and Ryan Carey.

Peters is the organizer for the recital and Donna Pucket is the collaborative accompanist.

Compromise for Splitting Nebraska Education Money Advances

school-fundingLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Lawmakers have reached a compromise over how to split millions of dollars in Nebraska Lottery money for education grants and programs.

Senators advanced a new funding distribution bill Thursday with a 34-0, first-round vote. Lawmakers changed the original measure to ensure K-12 schools received a larger percentage of the money.

The largest recipient under the bill is the Nebraska Opportunity Grant program, which provides financial aid to low-income college students. K-12 schools would receive millions for “innovation grants.”

Lottery revenue varies by year, depending on ticket sales. Nebraska will have an estimated $27.7 million available in fiscal 2017 and $17.8 million the following year.

Sen. Kate Sullivan of Cedar Rapids, chairwoman of the Education Committee, says lawmakers plan to study college affordability later this year.

Former NP Woman Gets 23 years for Manufacturing Child Porn

Julia Thiemann

A former North Platte woman has been sentenced to 23 years in prison for manufacturing child pornography.

According to a news release from United States Attorney Deborah R. Gilg, 34-year-old Julia Thiemann appeared in United States District Court before Senior United States Judge Richard G. Kopf for sentencing on Thursday.

According to prosecutors, in November of 2013, one of three children who were identified as victims in the case revealed to a therapist that he believed another child had been sexually assaulted by Thiemann’s live-in boyfriend, Billy Schrader.

The information was reported to the North Platte Police Department and a search warrant was obtained for Schrader’s residence.

At the time of the search, law enforcement seized computer equipment and other items.

After a forensic examination of the seized equipment, over 75,000 images of child pornography, produced by Thiemann and Schrader, were identified.

Thiemann was sentenced to 23 years in federal prison on Thursday, and Schrader was sentenced to 30 years earlier in the week.

Both Thiemann and Schrader must register as sex offenders for the remainder of their lives.

Gilg says the case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice.

Led by United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.

This case was investigated by the North Platte Police Department and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted jointly with the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office.

Sidney Man Accused of Leaving Scene of Fatal Crash

Jeronimo Abel Domingo
Jeronimo Abel Domingo

DALTON, Neb. (AP) — A 38-year-old Sidney man has been arrested, accused of leaving the scene of a fatal collision in western Nebraska.

Jeronimo Abel Domingo was taken into custody on Thursday. Online court records don’t list the name of an attorney who could be contacted to comment about the allegations on Domingo’s behalf.

The two-vehicle accident occurred around 9:40 a.m. Tuesday about two miles south of Dalton on U.S. Highway 385. Cheyenne County Sheriff John Jenson says the vehicles made contact as the one driven by Martin Geiger Jr. attempted to pass the other. Geiger’s car ran into a ditch and rolled twice, ejecting Geiger and his passenger, 54-year-old Kathy Berger.

Jenson says Geiger died at the scene and Berger was flown to a Scottsbluff hospital.

Nebraska Veterans’ Wait Times for VA Medical Appointments Among Lowest in US

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Less than 1 percent of appointments at the Omaha VA Medical Center, Nebraska’s largest such facility, failed to meet a federal timeliness goal of 30 days or less.

That’s according to an Associated Press examination of waiting times at 940 VA hospitals and outpatient clinics from Sept. 1 to Feb. 28, done in the wake of last year’s scandal last year over delays in veterans’ care and cover-up attempts.

Overall, Nebraska’s veterans are more likely to see doctors and other health care providers quickly at the state’s 10 VA facilities than their counterparts around the country.

Eileen Kingston is associate director for patient care for the VA Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System. She says the system’s managers participate in a weekly meeting dedicated to improving access to care for veterans.

NP Man Accused of Making Threats with Handgun

Mark Fattig
Mark Fattig

A 63-year-old North Platte man is facing felony charges after he allegedly threatened another man with a gun.

At around 11:45 a.m., on April 8, officers with the North Platte Police Department responded to the Cedar Lodge Apartments, 421 Rodeo Road, on the report of a man being threatened with a gun.

Officers arrived and spoke to a 53-year-old male, who advised that he had gotten into an argument earlier in the day with Mark Fattig.

The victim told police that when he walked by the outside of Fattig’s apartment, Fattig pointed a handgun at him, then pointed the gun to the side and pulled the trigger.  According to witnesses, the gun was not loaded.

Officers continued to investigate, and seized a 10mm Glock 20 from Fattig’s home.

Fattig was then placed under arrest and charged with felony terroristic threats and use of a weapon to commit a felony.

He was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.
