Dawson Public Power will have a planned power outage for the Village of Brady on Sunday, April 12, from 7:00-9:00 a.m.

A substation transmission line will be upgraded as part of the District’s system improvement plan. The upgraded line will be located near Jeffrey Hydro Station and travel south and east on Church Road to connect to a Dawson PPD substation.

To safely disconnect the existing substation transmission line, the Village of Brady will experience two planned power outages. The first planned outage will be Sunday, April 12. The second planned power outage is yet to be determined. The project is scheduled to be complete before irrigation season.

“We understand that planned power outages may be inconvenient for our customers, and Dawson PPD will do its best to minimize the time these customers are without power,” said Jeremy Kaiser, Dawson PPD Manager of Operations. “We thank our customers for their patience.”

Dawson PPD has hired Midwest Power to complete the project. Any questions or comments regarding the planned power outage may be directed to Dawson PPD at 800-752-8305 or 308-324-2386.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Drought conditions are expanding across a large section of the U.S., from California to the Great Plains.

The National Drought Mitigation Center at the University of Nebraska says the area covered by moderate drought or worse expanded by nearly five percentage points to 36.8 percent during March.

The drought monitor shows dry conditions broadened in the Midwest with 22 percent of the U.S. corn production area and 18 percent of the soybean area in some degree of drought. That’s up sharply from early March when just 6 percent of the corn growing area and 5 percent of the soybean region were in drought conditions.

Dryness worsened during March in Colorado, Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

Two-thirds of California is in extreme to exceptional drought.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska’s corrections department is upgrading its computer software to calculate more prison sentences automatically following news last year that hundreds of inmates were released too early.

Gov. Pete Ricketts announced Monday that the upgrades should be completed by October.

An investigative committee concluded last year that prison officials ignored several Nebraska Supreme Court rulings that outlined the correct way to calculate sentences.

In addition, many of the incorrect sentences were calculated manually by corrections staff because of gaps in the current online system. Ricketts says the changes will help automate and streamline the process.

Nebraska Department of Correctional Services Director Scott Frakes says the new software will help minimize the possibility of human error in the calculation process. Frakes says the changes are one step toward prison reform.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts is reiterating his opposition to a Medicaid expansion bill set for debate in the Legislature.

The Republican governor said in his weekly column Monday that the bill would create an expensive burden for taxpayers, adding $158 million in expenses to the state budget.

Ricketts says Nebraska’s Medicaid program consumes $1.8 billion of the total budget to serve about 238,000 people annually. Instead of Medicaid expansion, he says Nebraska should focus on creating jobs that offer private coverage.

Supporters say the bill would provide cost savings for residents, including $1 billion in “silent taxes” that insured people pay through higher premiums and a reduction in medical-related bankruptcies.

Lawmakers are scheduled to begin debate Wednesday.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska’s marriage rate has dropped to its lowest point since 1925.

In 2013, the state’s marriage rate was 6.3 marriages per 1,000 residents, according to a study by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. The rate was 6 in 1,000 in 1925.

The national marriage rate was 6.8 marriages per 1,000 residents in 2012.

The report says over half of all marriages in Nebraska in 2013 included either a bride or a groom who were over 30 years of age, which is up 40 percent from 1988.

A sociology professor says that people have shifted from looking for a “yoke mate” who can help them survive financially to a “soul mate.” Sociologists also cite women delaying marriage to pursue education and a career, and more couples choosing to live together without getting married.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A group of Nebraska teachers is helping revise state math standards after meeting with business leaders to discuss how they use math in their jobs and what skills their employees need.

About 40 teachers used the information they gathered to revise the data-gathering portions of curriculum standards, and strengthen the link between what students learn and the jobs they may have as adults.

This is the first time the Nebraska Department of Education has included business leaders from various industries in the discussion of standards for what students must know from kindergarten through 12th grade.

According to Deb Romanek, the department’s director of mathematics, the revisions clarify what math skills students need to have mastered and eliminate duplication between grades.

A draft of the standards will be available online to the public through May 29.

A North Platte woman is facing a felony assault charge after she allegedly threw a steel pot at her husband.

On April 5, at around 7:26 p.m., North Platte Police responded to the report of domestic violence at a residence in the 1300 block of West 9th Street.

Officers arrived an met with a 39-year-old male who alleged that his wife, 36-year-old Angelica Gray, had arrived at the residence and was angry with him.

The man claimed that Gray threw a stainless steel pot at him and struck him in the mouth.

Police say the victim had a cut lip that corroborated his allegations.

According to police, Gray had left the scene but was observed driving by in a vehicle.

An officer conducted a traffic stop near Rodeo Road and Buffalo Bill Avenue and placed Gray under arrest.

The officer spoke to Gray who denied the assault.

Following further investigation, officers determined there was probable cause to place Gray under arrest and charge her with felony 2nd degree domestic assault.

Additionally, police say two children, ages 7 and 8, were present during the assault.  As a result, Gray was also charged with two counts of child abuse.

She was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.

Two North Platte men are facing child pornography charges following separate investigations by North Platte Police.

North Platte Police say they began an investigation when officers monitoring file sharing websites on the internet discovered an IP address downloading suspected child pornography.

Through their investigation, officers were able to determine that the IP address being used was assigned to an address in the 2300 block of East 6th Street.

Enough evidence was gathered to execute a search warrant on the residence, and the warrant was executed on April 3.

Police say preview software was used to scan the computer, and a video file was located on the computer that fit the definitions of child pornography.

It was also discovered that the computer was “sharing” files of child pornography using a file sharing program.  Investigators say this means other people could connect to the IP address and download child pornography from that computer.

It was determined that the resident, James Youngblood, Jr., was responsible for downloading the contraband and sharing it.

Youngblood was charged with possession of child pornography and distribution of child pornography.  He was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.

North Platte Police began a separate investigation after an IP address assigned to a residence in the 500 block of was found to be downloading suspected child pornography.

A search was obtained and executed on April 6.

After a scan by preview software, officers found several files that fit the definition of child pornography on a computer in the residence.

Police say this computer was also sharing files containing child pornography.

Police placed the resident, Angel Garcia, under arrest and transported him to the Lincoln County Detention Center.

He too was charged with felony possession of child pornography and felony distribution of child pornography.
