Panel Calls for Reforms, Firings in Nebraska Prison System

prisonLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska legislative committee is calling for more prison administrators to lose their jobs as part of an overhaul of the Department of Correctional Services.

The committee released a final report Monday that proposed 16 reforms for Nebraska’s problem-plagued corrections department.

The report calls for the termination of three prison administrators: Kyle Poppert, Dr. Mark Weilage and Larry Wayne. Lawmakers say Poppert was partly responsible for the hundreds of inmates whose sentences were miscalculated, while Wayne was involved in the case of Nikko Jenkins.

Jenkins, who begged for mental health treatment, was released directly from segregation and went on to kill four people in Omaha.

The report also suggests additional resources for mental health services and an overhaul of the state’s use of segregation.

NP Business Cited for Selling Alcohol to Minor

state-patrol-logoThe Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) conducted compliance checks over the weekend at 16 retail alcohol outlets in Lincoln and Perkins Counties.

On Saturday, Dec. 13, compliance checks were conducted in Lincoln County (14) and Perkins County (2). Of the 16 compliance checks conducted, one business in North Platte, Kelsey’s Place, 219 Rodeo Road,  was found to be non-compliant after selling alcohol to a minor.

The retail outlets checked during the effort included convenience, liquor and grocery stores, as well as restaurants and bars.

Law enforcement performs compliance checks to ensure businesses are complying with the state’s alcohol laws, and to decrease youth access to alcohol.

Compliance checks were conducted thanks in part to a grant from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety (NOHS).

A contractor and a team of windmill specialists installed the windmill, which is more than 60 feet tall, last week near the entrance of the Windmill State Park and Recreation Area.

The windmill was originally erected in 1973. But its base was damaged by high winds seven years ago and the structure was removed.

The windmill, 20 feet in diameter and with 200 blades, is the largest of the park’s three windmills.

McCook Leaders Propose Bigger Work Ethics Camp to State

ne-department-of-correctionsMCCOOK, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska is considering spending roughly $260 million to expand three prison facilities, but officials in the southwest corner of the state think expanding the work camp there would be a better option.

Five community leaders from McCook recently visited Lincoln to make the case for expanding the McCook Work Ethic Camp to handle about 500 inmates.

Currently, the McCook program has 154 offenders and the capacity for 200.

McCook City Councilman Jerry Calvin says expanding the work camp would be more cost effective than building prison beds.

This fall, a consultant recommended the state add 750 new beds to the community corrections centers in Lincoln and Omaha. And the consultant also recommended adding more than 350 beds to the Lincoln Correctional Center.

Hearing to Be Held on Dismissing Nebraska Water Lawsuit

Republican-RiverBEAVER CITY, Neb. (AP) — Attorneys for Nebraska and a group of southwest Nebraska irrigators suing the state will spar in court next week over a motion to dismiss the lawsuit.

A hearing will be held Wednesday in Furnas County District Court on a motion by the state to dismiss the lawsuit.

Four Nebraska farmers filed the suit in August, demanding that the state compensate them for irrigation water that was diverted away from their crops to comply with the Republican River Compact.

The farmers allege in the lawsuit that their yields were lower in 2013 because they were denied access to water that should have been stored in nearby dams and canals. Nebraska released the water downstream to Kansas to meet its obligations under the 1943 compact.
