A McCook man is in custody after police say he sexually assaulted two 15-year-old girls.

According to a news release from the Lincoln Police Department, 30-year-old Michael Brunswick has been charged with 1st degree sexual assault of a child and electronic child enticement.

Lincoln Police say Brunswick began communicating with the girls, who are from Lincoln, through the dating website meetme.com in 2013.

Police say that summer, Brunswick met with the girls at Ballard Park in Lincoln, where the girls allegedly performed sexual acts on Brunswick in exchange for cigarettes.

One of the girls eventually told her mother, who contacted police.

Nebraska law prohibits anyone over the age of 19 from having sex with anyone under the age of 16.

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — Actual rain and the threat of severe weather have been blamed for a drop in attendance at the Nebraska State Fair last week.

Heavy rain held down the Grand Island crowds at the beginning of the week, and then Sunday’s forecast may have kept people home. Sunday’s attendance was down 36 percent from last year’s final Sunday.

Threats of 2-inch hail, 70 mph wind and heavy rainfall on Sunday were topped by the forecast possibility of a tornado. Fair executive director Joe McDermott says it turned out that Grand Island had great weather on Sunday, but he thinks the forecast likely swayed people’s decisions about attending the fair.

 

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — A Roman Catholic priest who’d been accused of using a club to threaten his brother has been given two years of probation on reduced charges.

Court records say 53-year-old Michael Wetovick was sentenced on Tuesday in Grand Island. He originally was charged with felony terroristic threats, assault and use of a weapon. Wetovick pleaded no contest and was convicted on two misdemeanor charges. The weapons charge was dismissed.

Hall County authorities say that on June 16, 2013, Wetovick accused his brother of stealing from him, and a fight ensued. Authorities say the brothers have been involved in a long feud.

Wetovick is no longer listed on the parish website as associate pastor at Grand Island’s Blessed Sacrament Church. The diocese website lists several assignments for him in the Nebraska Panhandle.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — The 53 contestants vying to become the next Miss America will meet the public on the Atlantic City Boardwalk.

Entrants from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands will appear Wednesday afternoon at the traditional welcoming ceremony across from Boardwalk Hall.

This is the second year that the pageant, which began in Atlantic City, has returned to its roots after several years in Las Vegas.

The nationally televised finale will be held Sept. 14.

Several North Platte residents are in jail on felony drug charges following the execution of a search warrant on Tuesday.

At around 1:30 p.m., on September 2, officers from the North Platte Police Department served a search warrant on a residence in the 1200 block of West 11th Street.

According to Officer Rodney Brown, the home’s residents, 36-year-old Heath Foster and 31-year-old Chandra Olson, were believed to be involved in illicit drug activity.  Additionally, Foster was being sought for domestic violence, stemming from a call at the same residence on August 27.

Upon executing the warrant, officers located drug paraphernalia commonly found with methamphetamine, and small baggies containing meth residue.

Foster was a taken into custody on the domestic assault charge and felony possession of methamphetamine.  Olson was also arrested and charged with felony possession of methamphetamine.

According to Brown, 31-year-old Jason Sullivan, who was living in a camper behind the residence, was also found to be in possession of meth.  He was also charged with felony possession of methamphetamine.

The trio was transported to the Lincoln County Detention Center and jailed.

CHICAGO (AP) — A big study says removing both breasts to treat cancer in just one doesn’t boost survival for most women. That’s compared with removing just the tumor plus radiation.

The results raise concerns about a riskier, potentially unnecessary operation that increasing numbers of women are choosing.

The study involved nearly 200,000 California patients followed for several years.

Ten-year survival rates were nearly identical — or roughly 82 percent — for lumpectomies plus radiation, and for double mastectomies. Women who had a single mastectomy, removal of just the cancerous breast, fared slightly worse.

Most women choose lumpectomy treatment. But double mastectomies have increased substantially in recent years, especially in younger women.

The study was published Tuesday in this week’s Journal of the American Medical Association.
