LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska State Patrol says more than 75 impaired drivers were arrested in the state during a two-week national campaign.

Troopers arrested drivers between Aug. 15 and Monday. More than 2,000 drivers were cited for speeding, among other infractions.

Officials say troopers also seized more than 65 pounds of marijuana during a traffic stop Saturday in Seward County. Two people from Arizona were arrested in connection to the case.

A grant of more than $27,000 covered overtime hours to troopers and others involved in the campaign.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Northwestern University researchers believe that music training has played a role in the educational achievements of children in a Los Angeles-based nonprofit that provides free music lessons to low-income students.

The founder of the Harmony Project says the students graduate from high school and attend big universities more often than their counterparts in the city’s gang-ridden neighborhoods.

According to results reported in Tuesday’s edition of The Journal of Neuroscience, a two-year study of 44 children in the program shows that the training changes the brain in ways that make it easier for youngsters to process sounds.

That increased ability, they say, is linked directly to improved skills in such subjects as reading and speech.

Researchers say more study is needed to determine the best learning approaches for children.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha-based health care organization is receiving money from the federal government to fund a program aimed at reducing infant mortality.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell says in a statement Tuesday the agency is providing $65 million to 87 organizations in 33 states.

In Omaha, the Charles Drew Health Center will receive nearly $533,000.

The money supports Healthy Start, a program which provides resources for vulnerable mothers and infants in areas of the country with disproportionately high rates of infant mortality.

Burwell says 56,000 women nationally will benefit from the money.

A 30-year-old transient is facing charges after he allegedly created a drunken scene at a North Platte restaurant.

At around 2:45 p.m., on August 30, North Platte Police responded to a disturbance at the Mongolian Grill and Cold Stone Creamery.

Upon arrival, officers made contact with employees, who alleged that Randy Nevsimal was trying to get food and being belligerent with employees.

After investigating further, officers placed Nevsimal under arrest.

He was transported to the Lincoln County Detention Center and jailed.

He’s been charged with disturbing the peace, criminal mischief and consumption of alcohol in public.

 

A 23-year-old North Platte woman is facing felony drug charges following a traffic stop early this morning.

At around 12:30 a.m., on September 2, a North Platte Police officer on patrol observed a Ford Explorer being driven by Tesla Ronje.

The officer had knowledge that Ronje’s driver’s license was suspended.

The officer made contact with Ronje in the parking lot of Kwik Stop, near 9th and Jeffers Streets.

After confirming that Ronje’s license was suspended, the officer placed her under arrest and conducted a search.

The search led to the discovery of drug paraphernalia and the prescription drugs Tramadol and Lorazepam.  According to Officer Rodney Brown, Ronje did not have a prescription for either medication.

Ronje was transported to the Lincoln County Detention Center, and jailed on charges of driving under suspension, possession of drug paraphernalia and two county of felony possession of a controlled substance.

 

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska officials are turning to local business leaders in hopes of attracting more companies to the state.

Gov. Dave Heineman said Tuesday that Nebraska can’t afford to become complacent when competing for new businesses. His remarks came as he announced an upcoming “Nebraska Diplomats Passport Weekend” to encourage economic development.

The nonprofit Nebraska Diplomats group recruits local business leaders who agree to promote the state in their business travels and to personally reach out to executives from elsewhere. Its members are working in tandem with the Nebraska Department of Economic Development to try to grow the state economy.

Heineman says Nebraska has made good strides in recruiting companies through tax reforms and funding for higher education, but he notes that competition with other states remains fierce.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A monthly economic survey index for nine Midwestern and Plains states rose slightly in August, suggesting growth is ahead.

A survey report issued Tuesday says the overall Mid-America Business Conditions Index inched up to 57.2 last month from 57.0 in July. The index had reached a three-year high of 60.6 in June.

Looking six months ahead, the business confidence portion of the overall index climbed to 60.4 from 60.0 in July. It had hit 63.6 in June.

The survey results from supply managers are compiled into a collection of indexes ranging from zero to 100. Survey organizers at Creighton University say any score above 50 suggests economic growth, while a score below that suggests decline.

The survey covers Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota.

A North Platte man and woman are facing charges following a disturbance over the Holiday weekend.

At around 6:30 a.m., on August 31, officers with the North Platte Police Department responded to the report of an assault in the 1100 block of South Oak Street.

A 63-year-old female reported that 33-year-old Angela Hasbrouck had been at her apartment the night before, and had been asked to leave.

The victim reported that Hasbrouck returned the next morning and was allowed to use the restroom.

Once inside the apartment, the victim alleged that Hasbrouck became belligerent, then slapped, pushed, and pulled the victim’s hair.

Officers learned that Hasbrouck had an active Lincoln County warrant for possession of a controlled substance, and soon located her and a male friend, William Warren, who also had an active warrant.

Both Warren and Hasbrouck were placed under arrest for the warrants.

A subsequent search of Warren’s person revealed trace amounts of a white powdery substance, which later field tested positive for methamphetamine.

As a result, Warren was charged with felony possession of methamphetamine.

According to Officer Rodney Brown, the victim of the assault did not wish to pursue criminal charges.

Troopers with Troop C- Grand Island arrested one driver for Driving While Intoxicated and made contact with 21 motorists during two weekends of special enforcement activities held in Hall County.

Activity was light during the special enforcement which was designed to reduce the potential for serious injury and fatality crashes over the two weekends of the Nebraska State Fair. Troopers conducted high visibility patrols in and around Hall County during the evening and early morning hours on Saturday, August 23 and Saturday, August 30.

“Having very few issues to report is a positive outcome,” said Captain Chris Kolb, Commander Troop C-Grand Island. “Fewer incidents can be credited to the motoring public’s voluntary compliance with traffic safety laws.”

In addition to the one DWI arrest, citations were issued for speeding (4) and no seat belt (1). Troopers also provided assistance to six motorists. A $1,450 grant from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety (NOHS) helped to pay for the extra enforcement.
