US Gas Prices Drop 4 Cents to $3.67 a Gallon

gas-cardCAMARILLO, Calif. (AP) — A survey says the average price of a gallon of regular gasoline in the U.S. has fallen 4 cents over the last three weeks to $3.67.

Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg said Sunday that crude oil prices fell over news that Libyan output has risen and Iraq’s production was not substantially harmed by recent violence.

The survey taken Friday shows the average price for a gallon of midgrade gas was $3.86 and the average price for a gallon of premium was $4.01. Diesel averaged $3.94 a gallon.

Of cities surveyed in the continental U.S., Tulsa, Oklahoma, had the lowest average price at $3.35 a gallon. San Francisco had the highest average at $4.12 a gallon.

In California, the average price for regular gasoline was $4.07 a gallon.

In Nebraska, the average price for a gallon of Regular is $3.47

Nebraska Roads Plan Open for Public Comment

roadLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Department of Roads is accepting public input on its statewide transportation improvement plan.

The plan lists all highway and transit projects that will make use of federal money, as well as projects that are regionally significant. Nebraska’s plan is updated every year on Oct. 1. The plan is sometimes changed to add or remove projects, to update with different funding sources, or to change a project’s scope.

Federal law requires a public input period so that citizens can comment. The comment period opened on Wednesday and runs through 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

Public comments can be made on the department website at www.roads.nebraska.gov/STIP/index-public-comment.html .

Kearney Woman Dies from Lawnmower Burns

ambulance-lightsLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Kearney woman has died from the severe burns she received in a lawnmower accident last month.

56-year-old Terrie Moreau, of rural Kearney, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth’s Burn Center in Lincoln, where she was taken after the accident.

Investigators say that on June 30, Moreau was operating a riding lawn mower that went out of control, flipped and pinned her underneath. The mower then caught fire.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at O’Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral Home in Kearney. Burial will follow at Minden Cemetery.

Scholarship Honors Nebraska Politico Boosalis

helen-boosalisLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The deadline for scholarships honoring the late Nebraska political pioneer Helen Boosalis is almost here.

Boosalis, a Democrat, was the first woman elected mayor of Lincoln. In 1986, she was defeated by Republican Kay Orr in the nation’s first woman-versus-woman gubernatorial election. Boosalis died in 2009 at the age of 89.

Applications for the scholarship are limited to Nebraska women who are graduating from high school or continuing in higher education. Applicants are asked to submit an essay of up to 500 words about a female politician who inspired their own community service and political involvement. The deadline for submission of the essays to the Women’s Caucus of that Nebraska Democratic Party is Tuesday.

Three $500 scholarships will be presented at the Inspiring Women Luncheon on Aug. 8 in Lincoln.

47 Killed on Nebraska Roads Through March

NDORLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Newly released reports show that nearly four dozen people were killed on Nebraska roads in the first three months of this year.

The reports from the Nebraska Department of Roads show 47 people died on Nebraska roads from January through March. That’s one fewer than the 48 killed on Nebraska roads for the same period in 2013.

Department records show that this year, 14 people died on state roads in January; 15 died in February and 18 died in March.

Of the 47 killed, three were pedestrians hit by vehicles. One was a bicyclist hit by a car.

The reports show that of those killed while inside a vehicle, at least 20 were not wearing seat belts.

Interim Superintendent Named for NPPS

North_platte_public_schoolsThe North Platte Public School District Board of Education has named an interim Superintendent for the 2014/2015 school year.

In a news release Friday afternoon, the Board announced that they had come to terms with Dr. Larry Ramaekers.

At a Board meeting Thursday afternoon, the Board authorized President Kathy Phares to enter into negotiations with Dr. Ramaekers following an interview.  Ramaekers accepted the Board’s offer and will start July 28, following approval by the Board.

“Many members of the staff and administration were in attendance to gain insight on his background, character and professional career path,” Phares said.

Phares said it was evident that Dr. Ramaekers is a powerful communicator who is passionate about education.

She said the board believes his experience as a superintendent, as well as his profile as a leader in the Nebraska Council of School Administrators and the National Association of Secondary School Principals, will provide the district with the leadership needed to move forward as a team.

Ramaekers retired after nearly 40 years in education.  His last position was as Superintendent of Schools in Aurora, Nebraska.

The Board will continue to look for a full-time Superintendent to replace Marty Bassett, who resigned earlier this month.

Court Ruling Favors NPPD Over Irrigators

nppdOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Supreme Court has upheld a decision favoring a public power district’s right to water over those of farmers and ranchers along northern Nebraska’s Niobrara River.

The case stems from the Nebraska Public Power District’s 2007 decision to exercise its senior water rights to the Niobrara River after years of drought. The district said it needed the water to produce power at Spencer Dam, which it owns. Farmers and ranchers along the river sued when the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources ordered them to shut off their irrigation pumps that year.

In a majority opinion Friday, the state’s high court dismissed irrigators’ argument that the power district gave up water rights it acquired in the 1940s by not exercising them before 2007.

Council: US Economic Growth to Outpace Nebraska’s

Nebraska-Economic-Forecasting-Advisory-BoardLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A state business council predicts that Nebraska’s economy will slow enough this year for the rest of the nation to catch up.

The Nebraska Business Forecast Council says the U.S. economy as a whole will outpace Nebraska’s for the remaining months of 2014. Nebraska has enjoyed strong growth in recent years in farming and home construction.

The council says Nebraska will see stable farm income and relatively small increases in non-farm employment and income. The U.S. economy is expected to grow by more than 3 percent before the end of the year, before moderating in 2015 and 2016.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln economist Eric Thompson says the shift is partly due to slower population growth in Nebraska and the state’s already-strong labor market, which is less in need of recovery.

Nebraska Service Provider Seeks Bankruptcy Shield

community-action-of-nebraskaGERING, Neb. (AP) — A western Nebraska nonprofit corporation that provides social services says it is filing for bankruptcy protection from its creditors.

The agency is Gering-based Community Action Partnership of Western Nebraska. It runs more than 45 programs, including Head Start and a medical clinic. Its money comes from fees, grants, fundraising and government sources.

Interim executive director Margo Hartman says the intention is “to get this into a stable spot and keep providing services.”

The Chapter 11 filing will let the corporation reorganize its debts. Hartman says there would be no immediate effect on employees or services but says some programs eventually could be eliminated if they aren’t financially viable.

The agency’s financial setbacks are blamed on federal funding problems, high claims for its self-funded insurance program and financial reporting issues.
