Nebraska Cash Reserve Expected to Hit $707.5 Million

ne-department-of-revenueLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Higher than expected tax collections will boost Nebraska’s cash reserve to a projected $707.5 million.

The Nebraska Department of Revenue reported Thursday that net tax receipts totaled more than $4.1 billion for the budget year that ended on June 30.

The state’s economic forecasting advisory board predicted in February that Nebraska would receive about $4.02 billion, using conservative estimates.

By law, the difference of nearly $97 million has to go into the state’s cash reserve. That additional money will boost Nebraska’s rainy-day fund to $707.5 million.

The Government Finance Officers Association recommends that states maintain a savings balance that would cover two months’ worth of general fund expenses.

Heineman Traveling to National Governors’ Conference

dave-heinemanLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman is traveling to Nashville for an annual meeting of the nation’s governors.

Heineman is scheduled to leave Thursday for this year’s National Governor’s Association conference. The gathering for Democratic and Republican governors runs through Sunday.

Organizers say the event will focus on education, workforce development, health care, veterans and jobs.

The National Governors Association represents the governors of all 50 U.S. states and five U.S. territories. Heineman served as the group’s chairman from July 2011 through July 2012. He was the first Nebraska governor to hold the title in 50 years.

I-80 Work Expected to Slow Traffic Near Sidney

The Nebraska Department of Roads says temporary crossovers and temporary ramps will be set up, and traffic will be reduced to one lane.

Construction is expected to be finished by October.

Harley Davidson Recalling 66,421 Motorcycles

Harley-DavidsonDETROIT (AP) — Harley-Davidson is recalling 66,421 Touring and CVO Touring motorcycles from the 2014 model year because their front wheels can lock up without warning.

Motorcycles with anti-lock brakes built between July 1, 2013, and May 7, 2014, are included in the recall.

Harley-Davidson Inc. says the front brake line can get pinched between the fuel tank and the frame. That could cause front brake fluid pressure to increase, increasing the risk that the front wheel could lock up while riding.

The company knows of five crashes and two minor injuries related to the defect, which it discovered last fall through warranty claims.

Harley-Davidson will notify owners later this month. Dealers will replace the brake lines for free and attach straps to hold them in place.

Study: Psych Drug ER Trips Approach 90,000 per Year

pain-pillsCHICAGO (AP) — A new study says bad reactions to psychiatric drugs result in nearly 90,000 emergency room visits each year by U.S. adults.

A drug used in some popular sleeping pills is among the common culprits.

Most of the ER visits involve troublesome side effects or accidental overdoses and almost one in five results in hospitalization.

That’s according to an analysis of 2009-2011 data that the study authors analyzed.

They say doctors can help by recommending that patients use other insomnia treatments first, including better sleep habits and behavior therapy.
