High South Platte River Flows Used to Recharge Aquifer

platte-riverNORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) — A couple of Nebraska natural resources districts are taking advantage of high flows in the South Platte River to recharge the aquifer below.

The Twin Platte and South Platte NRDs have joined with Western Irrigation District and landowners in Keith and Deuel counties for the western Nebraska project.

The water is diverted at a gate near Julesburg, Colorado, and then sent down a canal system into reuse pits in both counties.

Ann Dimmitt of the Twin Platte district says the pits aren’t lined, so the water moves quickly through the coarse, gravelly soil.

The project is similar to those conducted in September and in 2011.

Assaults with Wrench, Bat Land NP Women in Jail

North Platte, Neb.–Two North Platte women are facing felony assault charges following a fight on Thursday afternoon.

At around 2:00 p.m., on June 25, North Platte Police responded to a residence in the 200 block of East 9th on the report of an assault.  Officers learned that the physical altercation involved multiple suspects, and reportedly involved weapons.

Upon arrival, the home’s resident, 29-year-old Roman Reyes, alleged that he returned home with 28-year-old Sophia Boe to find 27-year-old Nina Green inside his residence wielding a bat.

Reyes told officers that Green had damaged his bedroom door while attempting to hit him with the bat.  At one point, Green allegedly struck Reyes in the elbow with the bat.

During the altercation, a 22-year-old female resident of the home alleged that Boe struck her in the face and head with a pipe wrench, causing damage and injury to her face and teeth.  Boe also reportedly caused around $300 in damage to Green’s Ford Taurus which was parked at the scene.

Following further investigation, officers determined that there was probable cause to arrest both Boe and Green for their parts in the incident.

Boe was transported to the Lincoln County Detention Center and charged with felony 2nd degree assault, use of a weapon to commit a felony and criminal mischief.

Green was jailed and charged with felony 2nd degree domestic assault.  Police say Green was in a prior relationship with Reyes.

USDA Gives Initial Approval to Pig Virus Vaccine

usdaMILWAUKEE (AP) — The federal government has given conditional approval to the first vaccine licensed to fight a deadly pig virus.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea has killed millions of baby pigs since it showed up in the United States last year and is partly responsible for recent increases in pork prices.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture gave conditional approval last week to a vaccine produced by Iowa-based Harrisvaccines. The vaccine is being used mostly to boost immunity in sows that have had the disease so they can better pass on antibodies to their young.

Company spokesman Joel Harris said Wednesday that one challenge is immunity to PED doesn’t seem to last like it does with many viruses. He says it might last only a few months.

Other companies also have been working on vaccines.
