Grand Island Chief Explains Gang Member Numbers

Grand-Island-PoliceGRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — The Grand Island police chief says the 375 documented gang members noted in a grant application doesn’t mean that each person is still active in local gangs or even in town.

The city is seeking a $30,000 grant to integrate the city’s law enforcement reporting system with the state system so the city can share its crime data and intelligence.

Chief Steve Lamken said there are 375 names in the city database but their inclusion doesn’t mean “that each one is a hard-core gang member.”

Lamken says the database includes the names of gang members who have been sent to prison.

Filing Alleges Nebraska Prison Overcrowding

prisonLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Six inmates alleging overcrowded conditions have asked a district court to let them sue the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services without paying a filing fee.

Last week’s filing in Lancaster County District Court says the state Diagnostic & Evaluation Center in Lincoln exceeded its design capacity by more than 298 percent as of April 30.

Michael Sather, Dustin Krogman, Wayne Saul Jr., Dylan Aufdengarten, Edward Bean and Jason Spencer are listed on the filing. Sather says overcrowding, unclean conditions, noise and limited bathroom access are causing prisoners mental and physical ailments.

The state’s Correctional Services Department says it doesn’t comment on pending litigation.

In November two other inmates sued the department, alleging over overcrowding at the state prison in Tecumseh.

Panel: Flu Spray Better Than Shots for Young Kids

vaccinationATLANTA (AP) — When it comes to flu vaccines, a federal panel says a squirt in the nose is better than a shot in the arm for young children.

The advisory panel agreed Wednesday to tell doctors that FluMist nasal spray is a bit better at preventing flu in healthy young kids. The advice is specific to children ages 2 through 8.

Federal health officials usually adopt the panel’s recommendations and ask doctors and patients to follow them.

A pediatricians’ group, however, opposes the move. The group says FluMist is more expensive and doctors have already ordered their vaccine doses for the fall flu season.

The flu vaccine is recommended for everyone over 6 months old. The nasal spray version is approved only for ages 2 to 49.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Billionaire investor Warren Buffett has contributed $100,000 to the Democratic candidate for governor in Nebraska.

The contribution to Chuck Hassebrook was disclosed Tuesday through the candidate’s filing with the Nebraska Accountability and Disclosure Commission. Hassebrook, a former University of Nebraska Regent and director of the Center for Rural Affairs, is running against Republican Pete Ricketts, a wealthy Omaha businessman, whose family owns the Chicago Cubs baseball team.

Buffett, the chairman of Omaha-based Berkshire Hathaway, contributes most often to Democratic candidates. A spokeswoman for Buffett says he made the contribution because he believes Hassebrook would make “an outstanding governor.”

The donation may be one of the largest that Buffett, 83, has made to a single candidate at one time, according to Federal Election Commission records.
