GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — State Sen. Mike Gloor says he’s considering a run to become speaker of the Nebraska Legislature.

Gloor, of Grand Island, told a Rotary Club gathering in Grand Island on Tuesday that he’s thought about leaving his post as chairman of the Banking, Commerce and Insurance Committee to seek the Legislature’s top job.

Sen. Greg Adams, of York, will be leaving the Legislature at the end of the year because of term limits and so will surrender the post he’s held for the past two sessions.

Gloor stopped short of saying he will seek the job and noted that several other lawmakers may want it. One senator, Colby Coash (KOH’-ash), of Lincoln, has already said he will seek the position.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Cultural Endowment has selected a new executive director.

Marian Fey will take over for Pamela Snow, who is retiring this month after serving in the post for the past eight years.

Fey has been director of Nebraskans for the Arts. She will be responsible for continuing to build the endowment, enhancing statewide relationships and administration.

The Nebraska Cultural Endowment is the private partner in a public-private state partnership to provide long-term financial stability for the arts and humanities in Nebraska. The endowment supports the educational programs and projects of the Nebraska Arts Council and Humanities Nebraska.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska wildlife officials say severe storms that swept across the state have killed two peregrine falcon chicks atop the Nebraska Capitol.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission provides live streaming video of the nest box, and many falcon watchers awoke Wednesday to find it empty. Game and Parks and Capitol staff, along with personnel from Fontenelle Forest’s Raptor Recovery, found the bodies of both chicks Wednesday morning.

One chick was discovered on the second floor roof of the Capitol. The other was found on the ground.

A Game and Parks manager says it appears the chicks were blown out of their nest during the Tuesday storms.

Wind gusts in Lincoln exceeded 70 mph during the storms.

A Lincoln woman who was wanted on a warrant, is now facing a felony possession charge.

According to Officer Rodney Brown, an officer with the North Platte Police Department was on patrol at around 7:40 p.m., on June 3,when they observed a gray Chevy Tahoe, driven by Alexis Perez of Lincoln, traveling south on Buffalo.

After learning that Perez had an active Hamilton County warrant, the officer conducted an investigative traffic stop, and placed Perez under arrest for the warrant.

A subsequent search revealed a small plastic baggy containing a white powdery substance.  Brown said the substance field tested positive for methamphetamine.

Additionally, the officer found paraphernalia commonly used for smoking methamphetamine.

Perez was transported to the Lincoln County Detention Center and jailed for the warrant and felony possession of methamphetamine.  She was also cited for possession of drug paraphernalia.

CAMBRIDGE, Neb. (AP) — A southwest Nebraska official says a body found in a creek may be that of a person who’s been missing for about a year and a half.

The body was found in Medicine Creek on Sunday.

Furnas County Attorney Tom Patterson says three juveniles discovered the body while floating on inner tubes from the Medicine Creek Dam to Cambridge. Patterson says the person may have committed suicide. The person’s name hasn’t been released.

Despite severe weather in the area, the North Platte City Council meeting went on as planned Tuesday evening.

The agenda item that was on everyone’s mind was, of course, the project to renovate the former Cedar Bowl and how much funding, if any, the City Council would award the project from the city’s Quality Growth Fund.

Local businessmen, Lonnie Parsons and Gary Suhr, have plans to transform the Cedar Bowl into a high-quality family entertainment center, including a family-friendly restaurant.  The business closed its doors in May after nearly 36 years in business.

The facility is in need of major repairs and renovation, to the tune of nearly $3 million.  Suhr and Parsons’ ability to go through with the purchase of the building hinged on their ability to receive assistance from the QGF.

After receiving a recommendation that was lower than they had hoped for from the Quality Growth Fund Citizen Review Committee, they were hopeful that the Council would come through.

According to Parsons, after some negotiations, the Council approved a $100,000 grant and a $350,000 low-interest loan, with a 7-1 vote.  Councilman Jim Carman voted against the proposal.

Councilman Andrew Lee said said he felt the agreement was fair, and prevented the leakage of tax dollars to other cities, such as Kearney.

“The loan helps protect the risk, and it was the risk of betting on them,” Lee said.

There is no word yet on when renovations will get underway, but, as the Save Bowling in North Platte Facebook page says, “we’ll all be having a ball at the (former) Cedar Bowl soon.”

 

 

 

 

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) — The Lincoln County highway superintendent says the frugality his department has been practicing is getting costly.

Superintendent Jerry Hitchcock asked the Board of Commissioners on Monday to keep his department in mind as budgeting begins.

He hasn’t been able to replace any old, worn-out equipment and says his aging trucks and graders need lots of maintenance to meet the work demands. Hitchcock told the commissioners that, “We’ve practiced frugality out of necessity, but now it’s leading us down the road of becoming more expensive.”

He estimates that by the end of the fiscal year, June 30, the repairs will total as much as $275,000.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Large hail has been reported in Nebraska as severe weather with a potential for tornadoes moves through a swath of Midwest states.

The National Weather Service says the highest risk for severe weather Tuesday is centered in parts of northern and eastern Nebraska, western and southern Iowa, and northeast Missouri. Officials say there’s the potential for a derecho system, which is a storm of strong straight-line winds spanning at least 240 miles.

An outbreak of severe thunderstorms also is expected in parts of Illinois, Kansas and South Dakota. Officials say baseball-size hail was reported Tuesday afternoon in northeast Nebraska.

The severe weather threat arrives amid an unusually quiet late spring, with far fewer documented tornados in May than in previous years.
