Nebraska Insurer Says Hospital Chain Overcharging

BlueCross-BlueShield-of-Nebraska-200x125OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — One of Nebraska’s biggest health insurance firms is trying to force Catholic Health Initiatives to negotiate lower prices at its hospitals in the Omaha area.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska said Tuesday it notified Catholic Health Initiatives that it plans to terminate its contract with the provider at the end of August if an agreement can’t be reached.

The insurer says Alegent Creighton routinely charges more than other Omaha hospitals.

The contract covers all Alegent Creighton hospitals in Omaha, Schuyler, Plainview and Council Bluffs, Iowa. It also includes hospitals in Lincoln, Grand Island, Kearney and Nebraska City that are affiliated with Catholic Health Initiatives.

The 700,000 people insured by Blue Cross will be able to continue seeing doctors affiliated with the Catholic Health network at least through Aug. 31.

Man in Custody Following Standoff at Gering House

gering-policeGERING, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a man has been taken into custody following a standoff at a house in the Nebraska Panhandle city of Gering.

The incident began early Tuesday morning at a house just south of Northfield Elementary School. Officers evacuated nearby residents because of reports that the man had made threats and was armed.

The man’s name and other details about his standoff and apprehension have not been released. Police say the man was taken to Regional West Medical Center for evaluation.

Carbon Rule May Force Costly Changes in Nebraska

coal_trainOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska utilities might be forced to make expensive changes to comply with new proposed restrictions on carbon dioxide emissions because they rely heavily on coal power.

But utility and state officials said Monday the potential impact of the new rules won’t be clear until after they’ve had a chance to study the details.

The plan calls for Nebraska to reduce its carbon emissions by 26 percent by 2030. That’s less than the 30 percent reduction nationwide the Obama administration is seeking, but it’s still ambitious.

Troy Bredenkamp with the Nebraska Rural Electric Association says the rules will likely require some expensive updates.

But he hopes the state will be able to comply without drastic changes because it does get a significant amount of its electricity from nuclear and hydropower.

NP Woman Charged After Shopping Spree without Payment

A North Platte woman is facing a felony theft charge after she went on a shopping spree at Walmart, and forgot to pay.

At around 8:30 on June 1, officers with the North Platte Police Department responded to Walmart, 1401 South Dewey, on the report of an uncooperative female shoplifter.

According to store staff, Kathy Clifton was observed filling a large tote with assorted store merchandise, including food, alcohol, clothing, DVD movies and various other items.  She then attempted to leave the store without paying for the merchandise, which was valued at around $815.

Officer Rodney Brown said Clifton was confronted by store staff and escorted back inside, at which time she became defiant and uncooperative.

Police arrived to assist, and determined that there was probable cause to arrest Clifton for felony theft by shoplifting.

She was transported to the Lincoln County Detention Center and jailed.

Click It or Ticket Enforcement Ends in Nebraska

click-it-or-ticketTroopers with the Nebraska State Patrol issued 462 seat belt citations and warnings for violation of Nebraska’s seat belt law during the “Click It or Ticket” mobilization. A total of 55 child restraint citations and warnings were also issued. The “Click It or Ticket” nationwide campaign (May 19- June 1) encompassed the heavily traveled Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Nebraska’s seat belt law is a secondary law. Drivers can be cited for this violation only if stopped for a separate offense. Violating Nebraska’s Seat Belt law carried a $25.00 fine, for each offense.

Troopers and Communication Specialists put in overtime hours as a part of the “Click It or Ticket” campaign thanks in part to a nearly $28,000 grant from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety (NOHS).

Ricketts Place Lt. Gov. Heidemann on GOP Ticket

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Republican Pete Ricketts has picked Lt. Gov. Lavon Heidemann as his running mate in the Nebraska governor’s race.

Heidemann, an Elk Creek farmer and former state senator, will join the campaign to replace Gov. Dave Heineman, who is leaving office next year because of term limits. Ricketts made the announcement Monday and praised Heidemann as a man of great character, experience and collaborative skill.

Heidemann was appointed lieutenant governor in 2013, after winning election to the University of Nebraska Board of Regents. He previously served in the Legislature, where he was chairman of the budget-writing Appropriations Committee.

Ricketts says he chose Heidemann in part because of that experience and the time he has spent as a farmer and school board member.

5 Midwestern States Face Moderate Storm Risk Tuesday

severe weather june 3 2014ST. LOUIS (AP) — An unsettled weather pattern has five Midwestern states facing a moderate risk of severe storms on Tuesday.

The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, warned Monday that portions of Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and Illinois are at a heightened risk of severe storms with hail, high winds and possibly tornadoes. The weather service says the tornadoes could be strong, if they occur.

Greg Carvin, lead forecaster for the Storm Prediction Center, says numerous thunderstorms will be fueled by warm, moist air in the upper Midwest.

Localized rainfall may not be too great because the storms will be so fast-moving, but Carvin says the risk of flash flooding exists.

Former Nebraska Teacher Acquitted in 2nd Child Sex Assault Case

BRIDGEPORT, Neb. (AP) — A 38-year-old Gering man facing five years in prison in a Scotts Bluff County child sex assault case has been found not guilty in a Morrill County case involving the same girl.

A Morrill County jury acquitted Richard Cobos last week after a two-day trial. He’d been charged with abusing the then 9-year-old girl in 2009.

In April he was convicted in Scotts Bluff County District Court of sexually assaulting the girl on several occasions between 2009 and 2012. Prosecutors say the girl was not a student in the Mitchell school district, where Cobos taught junior high math.

His Scotts Bluff County sentencing is scheduled for June 4.
