Alliance Woman Makes Plea Deal in Rodeo Theft Case

gavel(AP) — An Alliance woman has made a plea deal on allegations that she stole more than $2,900 from the Alliance Cattle Capital Rodeo Committee.

Alliance radio station KCOW and its Panhandle Post website say that 40-year-old Tera Gasseling on Monday pleaded guilty to attempted theft. Box Butte County prosecutors had lowered the charge and dropped another in exchange for her plea. She faces up to five years in prison.

Her sentencing is scheduled for May 14.

The theft occurred between Jan. 1, 2011, and March 14, 2012.

Wal-Mart Recalling 174,000 Dolls Over Burn Risk

walmart(AP) — Wal-Mart is recalling 174,000 dolls because the toy can overheat and potentially burn consumers.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Tuesday that the “My Sweet Love / My Sweet Baby Cuddle Care Baby Doll” has a circuit board in its chest that can overheat, causing the surface of the doll to get hot and burn someone.

Wal-Mart has received 12 reports of incidents, including two burns or blisters to the thumb.

Consumers should stop using the product, remove the batteries and return them to any Walmart store for a refund.

The electronic baby doll, made by Tak Ngai Electronic Toys Co. of China, was sold exclusively at Walmart stores from 2012 through 2014 for $20.

NP to Participate in Statewide Tornado Drill

tornado-sirenSevere weather is knocking on the door in Nebraska, and local and state officials want you to be ready when it strikes.

In observance of Severe Weather Awareness Week, there will be a statewide tornado drill Wednesday, March 26, between 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. CDT.

The National Weather Service says the purpose of the drill is to ensure that Nebraskans can adequately receive a tornado warning and to practice any actions which would be taken to protect their life in the event of a real tornado.

Officials say the drill presents an excellent opportunity for everyone at work, school or home to practice their safety measures.

The weather service will issue a test tornado watch for North Platte and the surrounding area at 10:00 a.m. CDT,  and a test tornado warning at 10:35 a.m.

The North Platte 911 Center said the sirens will be sounded in the city of North Platte in conjunction with the drill.

They also want to take this opportunity to remind citizens to sign up for CodeRED Weather Warnings.

CodeRED will alert citizens in the direct path of severe weather.  Users opt in to receive the alerts they are interested in, and both cell phones and landlines can be registered.

Fight Between Teen Girls Results in Child Abuse Charge for Sutherland Man

Kelly Christner
Kelly Christner

A 47-year-old Sutherland man is facing a felony child abuse charge after he became involved in a scuffle between his daughter and another girl.

At around 7 p.m. on January 5th, an officer from the North Platte Police Department responded to WalMart, 1401 South Dewey, on the report of an assault.

A 12-year-old female victim alleged that while she and her 12-year-old friend were walking around the store, they became involved in an argument with a 14-year-old female and her male friend.

The altercation allegedly turned physical when the 14-year-old female punched the victim in the back right shoulder and face.

Following a brief struggle, the teens separated and went their separate ways.

According to Officer Rodney Brown, as the 12-year-old victim was leaving the store, the suspect’s father, Kelly Christner, confronted her and her friend.

The victim told officers that Christner “threw her on a bench” and choked her, making it difficult for her to breathe.  WalMart employees reportedly had to intervene to stop Christner.

Following further investigation, officers determined there was probable cause to arrest Christner for felony child abuse, and on March 21st, Christner was processed and released from the Lincoln County Detention Center.

The 14-year-old suspect was cited for two counts of 3rd degree assault.

NP Woman Pleads Guilty to Abusing Elderly Woman

Tia Eggers
Tia Eggers

A 33-year-old North Platte woman has pleaded guilty to abusing a vulnerable adult after reaching a deal with prosecutors.

Tia Eggers appeared in Lincoln County District Court on Monday.

According to prosecutors, police responded to the emergency room at Great Plains Regional Medical Center on the report of possible neglect of a 62-year-old female in January 2014.

Hospital staff reported that the victim had not been given the proper medication, including insulin, which staff said she had been deprived of for at least 24 hours.  As a result, the woman was having seizures and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.

Staff reported to police that this had occurred at least once every month for six months.

It was determined that Eggers was in charge of caring for the woman.

Eggers eventually arrived at the hospital and was placed under arrest.

As part of the plea deal, prosecutors dropped a financial abuse charge, and Eggers entered the plea to one count of abuse of a vulnerable adult with physical injury.

She will be sentenced on May 12th.

Neb. Lawmakers Pass Tanning Ban for Those Under 16

tanning-bed(AP) — Nebraska teenagers under 16 could soon be banned from using indoor tanning beds, under a measure passed by lawmakers.

Lawmakers voted 40-1 on Monday to send the bill to Gov. Dave Heineman.

The bill would require anyone under 16 to be accompanied by a parent to use a tanning bed. A parent would have to sign a permission statement each time the youth tans.

Sen. Jeremy Nordquist of Omaha introduced the legislation, which originally would have banned those under 18. His bill would also require tanning facilities to post a sign warning that overexposure to ultraviolet radiation can cause premature skin aging and skin cancer.

Nordquist says he is concerned about increasing rates of skin cancer, particularly for young women.

Helicopter Use to Count Deer in NW Nebraska

Nebraska_game_and_parksThe Nebraska Game and Parks Commission says it employed a contracted helicopter to count deer in the rugged high country of the Pine Ridge in northwest corner of the state.

Over five days in early February, Game and Parks staff members surveyed eight areas of the Pine Ridge Management Unit, which encompasses 429 square miles. They counted 862 mule deer — 68 bucks, 477 does and 317 fawns.

The findings will help officials set hunting regulations and other management strategies for mule deer. Biologists suspect the species is struggling in some areas because of disease and other challenges.

The commission says staff members also counted 659 white-tailed deer, 96 elk and 11 bighorn sheep during the flights.

Survey: Neb. Farmland Value Rose 5 Pct in Year

farm(AP) — A report on preliminary findings say farmland land rose about 5 percent in value over the past year.

The annual Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market survey report says the value rose to nearly $3,200 an acre.

Survey reporters reported gains for all the farmland classes for the period Feb. 1, 2013, to Feb. 1, 2014. The figures are preliminary; a final report will be available this summer.

The preliminary report can be found at https://bit.ly/1hUmaee .
