Red Willow County Grosses Nearly $19K in Auction

red-willow-county(AP) — Red Willow County grossed more than $18,500 from an Internet auction of parts, equipment and tools that once belonged to a helicopter kit company that defaulted on a loan from the county’s revolving loan program.

The auction ran through Dec. 18 on the Big Iron website. Big Iron’s commission was 10 percent, and it charged $300 in handling fees.

In August the owner of Pawnee Aviation signed over the tools and equipment to Red Willow County. In return the county released its security interest in the company. Pawnee Aviation had borrowed $300,000 from the program in December 2004 and later defaulted.

Midwest MedAir Expanding to Hastings

midwest-medair(AP) — A medical transportation company will be stationing a helicopter in Hastings to complement flights from its base at North Platte Regional Airport.

Midwest MedAir operations director Steve Gardiner says the Hastings aircraft will help the company lower its response time.

Gardiner says Midwest MedAir has based a helicopter in North Platte since 2010. It responds to upward of 400 emergency calls a year across the state.

The helicopters can carry two patients at a time. Gardiner says a crew typically consists of a pilot, a nurse and a paramedic.

The Hastings flights are expected to begin by the end of the month.

Bruning Proposes Crackdown on K2, Stalkers, Child Porn

k2(AP) — Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning is proposing a legislative crackdown on stalkers, patent trolls who target businesses, a synthetic drug known as K2 and people who solicit child pornography.

Bruning identified the measures Tuesday as his legislative priorities.

One bill by Sen. Heath Mello is designed to hinder groups that acquire patents just to collect fees and threaten businesses with litigation.

Another measure by Sen. Burke Harr would make it illegal to solicit child pornography. Current state law only bans possession of child porn.

A third measure by Sen. Danielle Conrad would treat harassment and stalking as separate criminal offenses, and would allow stiffer penalties for prior violations.

Sen. Ken Schilz will propose a ban on a new form of K2, a synthetic drug that has killed youths in Nebraska.

Trial Set for April in Alliance Child Porn Case

James Parks

(AP) — An April trial is scheduled for a 65-year-old former hospital executive in Alliance accused in a child pornography case.

James “Jim” Parks pleaded not guilty on Monday to seven felony counts of possession of child pornography. He is a former member of Alliance’s Police/Citizen Advisory Board.

The Nebraska State Patrol says a four-month-long investigation began after a report from Box Butte General Hospital officials raised questions about information found on Parks’ work computer.

Authorities say a search of an email account of Parks showed conversations of a sexual nature about young girls between Parks and another man. Authorities say the account showed evidence the two men had exchanged videos and photos that depicted children sexually.

His trial is set to begin April 28.

Nebraska to Devise System for Scoring Schools

nebraska-department-of-education(AP) — Nebraska education officials intend to devise a new way to score public schools so they can get the help they need to improve.

The Education Department will be holding schools accountable for student achievement by combining what are now numerous rankings into just a few classifications.

On Monday the officials told Nebraska State Board of Education members that the new system will assign points to numerous measures, including graduation rate, test scores and improvement. Those points will be added together to come up with one score for each school.

The score would be used to place each school and district in one of several classifications, from highest-performing to lowest-performing schools.

NPPD Reports Generation Record During Cold Snap

nppd

(AP) — The bitter cold weather in Nebraska led to a new record for peak electricity use at one of the state’s largest utilities.

The Nebraska Public Power District says it set a new winter record for power usage between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. Monday.

The utility says it generated 2,256 megawatts of electricity Monday. That beat the previous winter record of 2,219 megawatts set in December 2009.

NPPD officials say it helped that the utility has a mix of different power sources, and it even generated more than 216 megawatts of power from wind during the peak demand period.

Two of the state’s other sizeable utilities — Omaha Public Power District and Lincoln Electric System — both came close to setting winter power usage records Monday but neither one did.
