A North Platte woman has been charged with felony child abuse after she allegedly used methamphetamine around her child.

According to Investigator John Deal, on November 15, 2013, North Platte Police accompanied the Department of Health and Human Services on a child welfare check in the 2800 block of West 5th Street.

The DHHS had received a complaint that 24-year-old Sarah Waugh had been using drugs around her child.

Officers and DHHS officials met with Waugh and determined that she had used drugs in the recent past, but was not under the influence at the time.

Because of the complaint, however, the child was taken to the Bridge of Hope Child Advocacy Center and a hair sample was taken to be tested for exposure to narcotics.

Several days later, the results of the test came back positive for methamphetamine.

Investigator John Deal said Waugh had moved away from the North Platte area, but police recently made contact with her and placed her under arrest.

Waugh has been charged with felony child abuse.  She is being held at the Lincoln County Detention Center.

A North Platte woman is facing a felony charge after she allegedly stole a shotgun and possibly other items from the home of a relative.

On Wednesday, January 1st, North Platte Police responded to the report of a theft in the 1500 block of North Sherman.

The victims told police that a shotgun and other property had been stolen from their residence while they were out of town.  They also stated that a relative, Jennifer Noffsinger, had been given permission to be at the home for a short period of time.

As officers investigated the theft, they were able to determine that a shotgun was sold to an individual that resembled the one stolen from the residence.  The individual said the gun had been sold to him by Noffsinger.

Officers made contact with the reporting party and determined that the gun in question was indeed the firearm that had been stolen.

Noffsinger was contacted on Monday, January 6th, and placed under arrest for possession of a stolen firearm, a Class III felony.  Noffsinger was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.

Investigator John Deal said the investigation is ongoing, as other property is still missing.

(AP) — A Scottsbluff woman has been accused of stealing from the bank account of her ailing mother.

Authorities have charged Jeanette Ralston with theft and abuse of a vulnerable adult. Ralston was arraigned Monday in Scotts Bluff County Court in Gering. County jail records said she remained in custody on Tuesday. Online court records don’t list the name of her attorney.

An arrest warrant affidavit says a Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services caseworker contacted law enforcement authorities after Ralston didn’t pay her mother’s bill at a nursing home, where the woman is recovering from a fall. The affidavit says Ralston has her mother’s power of attorney.

An investigator says Ralston has withdrawn more than $12,000 from her mother’s bank account over a six-month period.

A Lincoln man who led State Troopers on a high-speed chase with a child in his car and caused the lockdown of Sutherland schools has entered a plea of not guilty to multiple charges.

31-year-old Dustin Lankster appeared in Lincoln County District Court on Monday.

According to the Nebraska State Patrol, a Tropper initiated a traffic stop on a 2002 Saturn, driven by Lankster, on the afternoon of November 14th.

As the Trooper approached the vehicle, Lankster allegedly sped off and a chase ensued.

Authorities say Lankster drove his vehicle into Sutherland, through a fence and abandoned the vehicle.

A Code Red emergency alert was issued for the Village of Sutherland, and the school was placed on lockdown.  Lankster was eventually located in the backyard of a residence and taken into custody.

Officers located a female, April Crowley, and a five-year-old child in the vehicle.

Lankster has been charged with fleeing to avoid arrest, felony child abuse, obstruction of a peace officer, driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident and driving under suspension.

A Utah man who stole a car from the parking lot of a local radio station has been sentenced to jail.

Lincoln County District Court Judge Donald Rowlands sentenced 23-year-old Denver Lindsey to 180 days in jail for theft by taking and fleeing to avoid arrest.

North Platte Police responded to KODY on the report of a stolen vehicle in the early morning hours of October 14th.

Shortly thereafter, a Nebraska State Patrol Trooper located the vehicle in the Wal-Mart parking lot.  Police say Lindsey then led officers on a short pursuit that ended in a parking lot on East Francis Street.

In addition to the jail time, Rowlands also ordered that Lindsey’s license be suspended for one year.  He was given credit for 85 days served in jail.

(AP) — Nebraska ranchers and feedlot operators have to go out in the extreme cold to take care of their cattle, but they say they’re used to it.

The National Weather Service was urging most people to stay inside Monday to avoid wind chills ranging from 25 to 50 degrees below zero in Nebraska and Iowa.

Al Hoesing says he and the workers at CD Feedlots in northeast Nebraska know how to dress warmly in winter. Hoesing says Monday’s temperatures were only about 15 degrees lower than normal.

And the cattle are handling the cold well because their coats are in good shape and the ground is dry.

Kevin Johnson says Monday’s low of 7 degrees below zero at his feedlot near Ainsworth didn’t feel too bad for January.

 

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Two Republican candidates for Nebraska governor have unveiled tax-cut proposals that they’ll introduce as state senators, once the Legislature convenes.

Sens. Beau McCoy and Charlie Janssen announced their plans Monday, as lawmakers prepare to begin a new session.

Both plans would reduce the taxable value of farm and ranch land to 65 percent of market value, from the current 75 percent. They also would increase funding for the state’s property-tax credit program.

Janssen says his bill would cut income tax rates and exempt Social Security and military retirement income from taxation. McCoy says he will work to achieve those goals through bills already introduced in the Legislature.

Four other candidates are running: Omaha businessman Pete Ricketts, State Auditor Mike Foley, state Sen. Tom Carlson and Omaha tax attorney Bryan Slone.

A weekend traffic stop in central Nebraska led to the arrest of two people on the US Marshals Services Most Wanted List.

Just before 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 4, Lexington Police issued an alert for a red SUV involved in a gas drive-off at a Lexington convenience store.  A short time later, a trooper stopped a red 1999 Nissan Pathfinder matching the description on westbound Interstate 80 near the Darr Exit in Dawson County.

The driver of the vehicle, 30-year-old Shane E. Houke , of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was wanted by the US Marshals Service Northern Iowa Fugitive Task Force on multiple warrants for Failure to Appear, Contempt of Court on Conspiracy to Commit a Felony and False Use of a Credit Card.

A passenger in the vehicle, 30-year-old Dawn M. Lagrange, of Cedar Rapids, was also wanted by the US Marshals Service Northern Iowa Fugitive Task Force on multiple warrants for Illegal Use of Credit Cards, Conspiracy to Commit a Felony, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Gathering Where Controlled Substances are Used.

Both Houke and Lagrange were lodged in the Dawson County Jail.
