(AP) — The average U.S. price of a gallon of gasoline has dropped 14 cents over the past two weeks.

The Lundberg Survey of fuel prices released Sunday says the price of a gallon of regular is $3.38. Midgrade costs an average of $3.58 a gallon, and premium is $3.71.

Diesel was down 4 cents at $3.92 gallon.

Of the cities surveyed in the Lower 48 states, St. Louis has the nation’s lowest average price for gas at $3.01. San Francisco has the highest at $3.88.

In California, the lowest average price was $3.74 in Sacramento. The average statewide for a gallon of regular was $3.83, a drop of 14 cents.

(AP) — A rural Columbus man has been charged with third-degree assault after shooting his neighbor.

The shooting happened late Thursday night.

The Platte County Sheriff’s Office says 30-year-old Trent Kowalski shot a .22-caliber rifle inside his trailer home. The bullet exited the home, entered another and struck 57-year-old Mark Foxvog in the leg.

Foxvog was taken to Columbus Community Hospital, where he was treated and released.

Kowalski was arrested and taken to the Platte County Detention Facility, where he is still being held. No bond had been set.

The sheriff’s office and Nebraska State Patrol are investigating.

(AP) — Lancaster County prosecutors, defense attorneys and judges are getting used to a new system that’s allowing initial court appearances and arraignments in criminal cases to be held via video.

The switch is allowing the hearings to be held in the Lancaster County Courthouse, rather than four miles away in a tiny courtroom connected to the county’s old jail.

The move means officials no longer have to drive inmates from the new jail to the old one. Instead, defendants remain in the new jail and appear in court on a 32-inch TV screen.

Deputy County Public Defender Elizabeth Elliott, who has charged with getting defense attorneys up to speed on the changes, says the switch has gone well for the first week.

(AP) — Videos and photos taken by the public and posted online show the extensive damage wrought by tornadoes in northeast Nebraska and northwest Iowa.

The images show a number of businesses, including a farm implement showroom and a grain elevator at Wayne, Neb., destroyed. Many other businesses and homes stretching from Wayne to Cherokee, Iowa, are missing roofs and sections of walls. Windows in buildings and vehicles have been smashed. A semitrailer and tractor can be seen overturned in some photos.

The National Weather Service says at least six, but as many as nine tornadoes ravaged the region as a powerful storm cell moved through the area Friday night.

No deaths were reported, but 15 people in and around Wayne were treated for injuries.

(AP) — A tornado that struck the northeast Nebraska town of Wayne caused millions of dollars in damage, but the mayor says no one was killed and the injuries reported have been minor.

Mayor Ken Chamberlain said Friday that officials have accounted for all residents in town. At least 15 people were injured, but Chamberlain says nobody’s condition is life-threatening. Sioux City television station KTIV says the tornado caused millions of dollars in damage. Photos show widespread destruction to businesses and the local airport. Witnesses also reported that the tornado destroyed at least four homes and the city’s softball complex.

A Nebraska Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman says people were trapped in a building in Wayne. A hazardous material crew was dispatched to a gas leak at a supply company.

(AP) — A 53-year-old eastern Iowa man has been picked up by Nebraska authorities and awaits his return to face an arson charge.

Authorities say Jonathan Beam was taken into custody by Thayer County, Neb., sheriff’s deputies. Beam remained in Thayer County Jail on Friday. Online court records don’t list the name of his attorney.

He’s accused of setting fire on Tuesday afternoon to his home in the Washington County community of Washington. The home sits across the street from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the county jail. No injuries were reported.

(AP) — A northeastern Nebraska man has pleaded not guilty in connection with the death of his girlfriend’s 14-month-old son.

21-year-old Mark Grant, of Winnebago, pleaded not guilty Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Omaha to one count of child abuse causing death. A trial date has not been set.

Court documents say Grant was caring for Julius Harlan on Sept. 10 when the boy received brain injuries. He died the next day at an Omaha hospital.

Investigators say Grant provided different stories about the circumstance behind the injury. He told authorities that he dropped the child on a bed and then shook him to revive him.

Court records do not indicate if Grant has an attorney.

(AP) — Police and witnesses say the gunfire outside the U.S. Capitol today began when a woman tried to ram through a White House barricade with her car.

They say the woman then led police on a chase that ended outside the Capitol. Police say the woman was killed, and a young child who was with her was taken to a hospital.

A police officer was injured when the car crashed outside the Capitol, but the injuries weren’t life-threatening. Police say no officers were wounded by gunfire.

The entire Capitol complex was locked down for about an hour. Both houses of Congress went into recess.

Witnesses say at least 20 police cars were involved in chasing the Lexus toward Capitol Hill. One tourist says he walked toward the scene, curious about what was going on — but the he “heard the gunfire” and hit the ground.

(AP) — Authorities say a 63-year-old woman was robbed after two armed men kicked in the front door of her Lincoln apartment.

The robbery occurred about 3:20 a.m. Wednesday.

Police say the woman heard two loud noises and then realized someone was in her apartment.

Police spokeswoman Katie Flood says the two men got away with a purse but didn’t harm the terrified woman.

Robbers sometimes target drug dealers to steal the cash or drugs they have. But Flood says investigators didn’t find anything in the woman’s home to believe she is involved in any drug dealing.

(AP) — A Fort Calhoun family says one of its alpacas is missing, and family members fear the native South American animal may have been stolen.

Kay Ryschon said the Suri alpaca was last seen around 3 p.m. Tuesday and does not believe it would have left the herd on its own accord.

The female alpaca, named Summer, is 7 years old, 5 feet tall at the head and is micro-chipped.

Ryschon said it’s believed Summer was taken from the herd through a section of a fence on the acreage north of Omaha.
