First Apple Computer Sells for $388,000

apple-1(AP) — An original Apple computer from 1976 has sold at auction for nearly $388,000.

Known as the Apple 1, it was one of the first Apple computers ever built.

It sold Monday for $387,750 at a Christie’s online-only auction. The auction house did not disclose the name of the buyer. The seller was a retired school psychologist from Sacramento, Calif.

Vintage Apple products have become a hot item since Steve Jobs’ death in October 2011. Jobs joined forces with Steve Wozniak to build computer prototypes in a California garage, and Wozniak built the Apple 1.

Another Apple 1 was sold in May for a record $671,400 by a German auction house. It broke a record of $640,000 set in November.

Grand Island City Attorney Keeps His Job

City Attorney Bob Sivick

(AP) — The mayor of Grand Island has failed in his effort to fire the city attorney.

Four of the council members voted Tuesday night to fire Bob Sivick, but five voted to retain him.

Mayor Jay Vavricek wouldn’t cite any specific incidents that prompted him to seek Sivick’s ouster, calling it a personnel matter. But he acknowledged before the vote that there have been disagreements, including over how to handle the problems posed by the erection of profane signs by a Grand Island resident.

The council wanted Sivick to get a judge’s order to handle the matter, but Sivick said the city building director had the authority to remove the signs without a court opinion.

York County Tables Anti-Pipeline Resolution

keystone(AP) — The York County Board of Commissioners has tabled a resolution that opposes construction of the Keystone XL pipeline through the county in eastern Nebraska.

Several dozen people crammed into the board room on Tuesday morning — some to oppose the measure and others to support it.

The resolution would have the board state its opposition to the pipeline and, should the pipeline be built, commit the board to wielding its power to protect the residents’ welfare and resources.

The tabled measure will return for board reconsideration in two weeks.

The pipeline could carry 830,000 barrels of oil per day from Canadian tar sands to refineries on the Texas Gulf coast. The Obama administration is still considering whether to approve the project.

(AP) — In the tiny Minnesota tourist town of Dorset, the mayor is a short guy known for his fondness of ice cream and fishing. He’s got the county’s top cop in his pocket.

And he’s 4 years old.

Mayor Robert “Bobby” Tufts was only 3 when he won election last year as mayor of Dorset, a town of a little more than 20 people in the lakes and pines of northern Minnesota. Bobby can pull it off because the job’s ceremonial. His only major act so far has been to put ice cream at the top of the food pyramid.

Hubbard County Sheriff Cory Aukes is a fan, calling Bobby “a cute little bugger.”

The kid mayor is seeking a second term next month.

Autopsy on Lincoln Man’s Body Inconclusive

david-mueller(AP) — Authorities say an autopsy didn’t answer the question of whether a fall or a crime caused the fatal injuries to a 27-year-old Lincoln man.

David Mueller died Sunday afternoon after he was taken off life support. He was found injured north of downtown Lincoln by a passer-by on June 29.

Mueller’s cellphone and wallet were missing, but police have said it’s not certain whether Mueller was robbed or he fell after drinking heavily. Doctors told police they believe Mueller’s head injuries were more severe than what would have resulted from a fall.

Nebraska Based Insurance Company Fined in South Dakota

south-dakota-insurance(AP) — A Nebraska-based insurance company that is being fined $325,000 for violating South Dakota laws and regulations says it has taken steps to ensure it is in full compliance.

Omaha-based Ability Insurance says in a statement that the company remains committed to serving its customers and that the fine won’t affect its ability to pay policyholder claims.

The fine levied by South Dakota’s Division of Insurance was the largest such fine in state history. It came after a three-year investigation. State officials say claims denied by Ability have since been reprocessed.

Light Rail System from Omaha to Bellevue Proposed

omaha(AP) — Leaders in Omaha and Bellevue are considering a proposal to turn an abandoned railroad line into a light rail system that would run from north Omaha south into Bellevue.

City council members for Omaha and Bellevue recently attended a briefing on the proposal, led by Omaha community development nonprofit Emerging Terrain.

Planners say the proposed 20-mile light rail system would be coupled with a parallel recreational trail and hubs for an enhanced bus service traveling east and west. Planners say the light rail system could bring an estimated 9,000 jobs and 4,500 new homes to one stretch of the corridor.

Emerging Terrain founder Anne Trumble says the plan would require tens of millions of public and private dollars over the next 10 to 15 years.
