Elderly Lincoln Woman Robbed by Man Hiding in Car

lincoln-police(AP) — Lincoln police say an elderly woman has reported being robbed by someone hiding inside her car.

Police say the woman got into her SUV Monday night after leaving a market. She told police she heard a noise in the back seat before a man with a bandanna over his face popped up and placed a gun to her head.

The woman told police that the man ordered her to drive around before he got out at an intersection. He allegedly took her purse and groceries.

Additional information about the case is unavailable.

Colorado Potty Peeper Pleads Guilty

potty-peeper(AP) — A man accused of emerging from a Colorado portable toilet covered in feces has pleaded guilty to two burglary counts and attempted unlawful sexual contact.

Luke Chrisco was arrested in 2011 after a woman at a yoga festival in Boulder noticed something moving in the tank of the portable toilet, then saw a feces-stained man emerge and run away. Police said he also was suspected of hiding in other bathrooms around Boulder to watch women use the toilet.

Chrisco had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to various charges in May but changed his plea Tuesday.

Chrisco could face up to six years in prison at a sentencing hearing set for Aug. 30.

Woman Gets Prison Time for Faking Nebraska Health License

dept.-of-justice(AP) — A woman accused of pretending to be a licensed psychologist in Nebraska has been sentenced to four years in prison.

U.S. Attorney Deborah Gilg says Annette Crawley, also known as Kenya Sade Bryant, was sentenced Tuesday for health care fraud and false claims.

Prosecutors say Crawley, who formerly lived in Missouri, created a new identity to obtain a Nebraska license and to obtain employment. Between October 2011 and July 2012, she is accused of using her fake name to work at several behavioral service centers in the state.

Records show Crawley treated more than 200 patients at one center and illegally conducted psychological evaluations that were partially paid for by Medicaid, the Social Security Administration and the state of Nebraska.

(AP) — The city attorney’s job will be on the line at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting in Grand Island.

Mayor Jay Vavricek has added the item to the council’s agenda and is recommending that the council approve the firing of Bob Sivick.

Sivick, who has no employment contract, says he’s surprised by the mayor’s action and intends to fight to keep his job. He says he and the mayor and other city officials have been struggling for two years over how he should carry out his duties. Sivick says he’s been asked to take actions for political purposes.

Vavricek wouldn’t cite any specific incidents that have prompted him to seek Sivick’s ouster, calling it a personnel matter.

Service Honors 19 Firefighters Killed in Arizona Fire

firefighters-killed(AP) — Nineteen members of an elite firefighting Hotshot crew are set to be remembered at a memorial service expected to bring thousands of mourners from across the country.

The men were fighting a wildfire on June 30 in the small mountain town of Yarnell about 80 miles northwest of Phoenix when the blaze overtook them, killing 19 members of the crew. One member who was serving as a lookout survived.

The service is set for Tuesday morning in nearby Prescott Valley and is expected to draw firefighters from around the nation to pay their respects.

Vice President Joe Biden and Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer are set to speak at the memorial.

The blaze had burned about 13 square miles and more than 100 structures before firefighters gained control of it over the weekend.

Officials to Keep Conserving Missouri River Water

army-corps-of-engineers(AP) — The recent rains along the upper Missouri River won’t change the plan to conserve water in the river’s reservoirs but they will help improve navigation.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said Monday the river basin is still recovering from last year’s drought.

In June, the rain that fell north of Sioux City was slightly above normal. But officials predict the amount of runoff flowing into the river this year will still be only about 88 percent of normal.

So the amount of water being released from the Gavins Point dam on the South Dakota-Nebraska border will remain around 21,000 cubic feet per second.

But the Corps now expects to be able to provide enough water for a full navigation season on the river.

Lincoln School Workers Move Into New Building After Fire

arson(AP) — Nearly 100 workers have moved into the Lincoln school district’s new headquarters.

The new building replaces the headquarters building destroyed by an arson fire more than two years ago. A former district worker last year was sentenced to prison for starting the fire.

More than 70 firefighters responded to the blaze that began the night of May 30, 2011. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries.

The loss was estimated at $20 million.

The first wave of workers moved into the building’s third floor on Monday. Another wave is scheduled to move into the second floor next week, then a final group on July 22.

NASA Mars Rover ‘Curiosity” Begins Delayed Road Trip

nasa(AP) — It took longer than expected, but NASA’s Curiosity rover is finally heading toward a Martian mountain.

The nuclear-powered, six-wheel rover drove a total of 190 feet since July Fourth, leaving the spot where it spent the past seven months examining rocks and dirt.

Curiosity landed last August in Gale Crater near Mars’ equator and has already found an environment that scientists say contains all the right ingredients for microbes to survive.

The delay in heading to Mount Sharp was mostly due to unexpected discoveries. As pleased as scientists are with the progress so far, they’re itching to study the layers of rock at the base of the mountain.

The trek is expected to last nine months to a year with several stops along the way.
