NY Man Hand-Writes Bible in Four Years

Phillip-PattersonIn the beginning, New York resident Phillip Patterson decided to write out every word in the Bible.

Now, four years after starting with Genesis, the 63-year-old Hudson Valley man has copied out more than 2,400 pages and is close to completing the job. Patterson will finish up the final lines of the Book of Revelation during a ceremony at his church, St. Peter’s Presbyterian in Spencertown, on May 11.

Patterson might seem like an unlikely scribe for the King James version of the Bible. The retired interior designer is neither monkish nor zealous. He goes to church but has never been particularly religious. Health issues — including AIDS and anemia — have sent him to the hospital and slowed the work.

But he says he has always been curious.

Toys R Us Appeals $20 Million Award in Slide Death

toys-r-us(AP) — Toys R Us will go before Massachusetts’ highest court Monday to appeal a $20 million jury award to the family of a Colorado woman who died after an inflatable in-ground pool slide partially collapsed.

Robin Aleo was attending a pool party in Andover in 2006 when she slid head first down a “Banzai” slide sold by Wayne, N.J.-based Toys R Us. The slide partially collapsed and she slammed her head on the concrete pool deck. Aleo died the next day.

In 2011, Toys R Us was ordered to pay Aleo’s family $20.6 million.

During trial, lawyers for Aleo’s family said the slide didn’t comply with federal safety standards.

Toys R Us’ attorneys say the Consumer Product Safety Commission regulation cited by Aleo’s family only applies to rigid slides, not inflatable ones

Man Convicted in 1994 Colorado Springs Slaying

Jose Burciaga-Ruiz

(AP) — A jury has convicted a man of raping and murdering a mentally disabled woman in Colorado Springs nearly 20 years ago.

58-year-old Jose Burciaga-Ruiz was found guilty Friday of first-degree murder, second-degree murder and sexual assault in the death of 38-year-old Sharon Lee Sklavos. His sentencing is set for May 31.

Sklavos’ partially nude body was found in a field July 31, 1994.

Investigators always suspected Burciaga-Ruiz was involved, but the case against him was circumstantial — until police resubmitted evidence for DNA testing by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation with the help of a cold-case grant. The results came back in 2012 with a match to Burciaga-Ruiz, who was working as a roofer in Nebraska.

Burciaga-Ruiz dated Sklavos’ sister at the time of the slaying.
