UPDATE

Officials have called off the effort to recover the body of a man swallowed by a sinkhole below his Florida home.

Hillsborough County Administrator Mike Merrill said Saturday that they were ending the effort to find Jeff Bush’s body.

Merrill says officials planned to bring in heavy equipment on Sunday to begin demolishing the home.

He says “we’re dealing with a very unusual sinkhole.”

Engineers are headed back to the site of a Seffner, Florida sinkhole to do more tests on the unstable and dangerous ground that swallowed a man in his bedroom.

The engineers are expected to resume their work after sunrise Saturday on what they have described as a slowly growing sinkhole.

They have already determined that the soil around the home is very soft and they believe the entire house could eventually be devoured by the sinkhole.

Thirty-seven-year-old Jeff Bush was in his bedroom Thursday night when the earth opened and swallowed him and everything else in his room. Five other family were in the house but escaped unharmed. Bush’s brother jumped into the hole to try to help, but he had to be rescued himself by a sheriff’s deputy.

There is still no sign of Jeff Bush.

Attorneys Confirm They Are Considering Insanity Plea In Case of Aurora Theater Shooter

james-holmesLawyers for Colorado theater shooting suspect James Holmes have for the first time confirmed they are considering entering a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity on behalf of their client.

But they say in a motion made public Friday that Holmes shouldn’t have to enter a plea until the judge rules on whether Colorado’s insanity law is unconstitutional.

They say the law is unfair to defendants who invoke it because it requires the disclosure of potentially incriminating mental health records, while those who simply plead not guilty are not required to turn over evidence.

The 25-year-old Holmes is charged with going on a rampage in July at a suburban Denver movie theater that killed 12 people and injured 70. Holmes is scheduled to enter a plea March 12.

She surrendered on March 31.

Queen was sentenced on Thursday.

Her attorney had asked for probation, saying Springer’s blood alcohol content was nearly four times the legal limit had he been driving that night.

In court Thursday, Queen said she is truly sorry for not stopping.

More Businesses See Workplace Bullying as a Major Issue

workplace-bullyingMaybe your boss screams and throws a fit anytime something goes wrong. Or you suffer constant verbal abuse from a co-worker.

Workplace bullying can take many forms and a growing number of companies see it as a problem that can sap morale and lead to increased employee turnover.

It could become the next major battleground in employment law as a growing number of states consider legislation that would let workers sue for on-the-job harassment that causes physical or emotional harm.

More than a dozen states have considered anti-bullying laws in the past year.

Business groups strongly oppose the measures, arguing they would open the floodgates to frivolous lawsuits.

A recent survey found that 56 percent of companies have some kind of anti-bullying policy.

Bumblebees Appear to Be Disappearing in the Midwest

bumblebeeIt’s not just honey bees that are in trouble. The fuzzy American bumblebee seems to be disappearing in the Midwest.

Two new studies in Thursday’s journal Science conclude that wild bees, like the American bumblebee, are increasingly important in pollinating our plants. But, at least in the Midwest, the American bumblebee seems to be dwindling in an alarming manner.

A naturalist in the 1890s meticulously collected and categorized insects in Carlinville in southern Illinois. More than a century later, Laura Burkle of Montana State University went back to see what changed. She could only find half the species that had been there. And she found only one American bumblebee.

Scientists suspect a combination of disease and parasites for the dwindling of both wild and domesticated bees.

But she said Thursday she’s not sure how it happened, and may never know.
