High Profile Violent Crimes Have People Questioning Safety on the Vegas Strip

vegas

Known as Disneyland for grown-ups, Las Vegas brands itself as a place where tourists can enjoy a sense of edginess with no real danger.

But a series of violent crimes amid the throngs of tourists is threatening Sin City’s reputation as a place to let your guard down with no fear of consequences.

A car-to-car shooting and fiery crash that killed two bystanders and an aspiring rapper Thursday followed an elevator stabbing and a movie theater parking lot shooting.

Though crime is falling on the Strip that houses the city’s major casinos, tourism officials worry that vacationers and convention planners could begin to steer clear because of a perception of mayhem.

They say that with violent crime, as with so much else in Vegas, perception may outweigh reality.

Browsing through news reports from the past months, you might think the statistics were deceiving. Here’s a look at some of the recent crimes and court cases that have grabbed headlines:

— Dec. 21, 2012: A casino card dealer is accused of using razor blades to slash a co-worker’s face at a blackjack table at the Bellagio casino-resort.

—Jan. 1, 2013: A 20-year-old man is accused of firing a gunshot into the floor of a crowded Circus Circus during a New Year’s Eve argument.

—Jan. 1, 2013: A sergeant in Saudi Arabia’s air force is accused of pulling a 13 year-old boy into a hotel room at Circus Circus and sexually assaulted him.

—Feb. 11, 2013: A University of California, Berkeley, law student pleads not guilty in what prosecutors allege was the torture death and beheading of an exotic bird at a resort.

—Feb. 6, 2013: An overnight shooting in a parking structure outside a movie theater left two teens with major injuries and also hurt a third teen.

— Feb. 14, 2013: A former high school football coach and teacher from Florida was sentenced to three months in jail after being convicted for accidentally killing a Utah man with a single punch at a casino.

— Feb. 16, 2013: Two men were booked on suspicion of attempted murder after allegedly stabbing a guest in the elevator of The Hotel at Mandalay Bay on the Las Vegas Strip.

knutsonA former Omaha middle school teacher accused of molesting students faces trial Monday.

Shad Knutson’s trial had been set to begin Wednesday, but was pushed back following a dispute over witnesses.

Prosecutors say the 36-year-old Knutson molested or had inappropriate relationships with five girls ages 13 to 15 from 2008 through 2010 while a social studies teacher at Nathan Hale Magnet Middle School. He’s charged with seven felony counts, including sexual assault of a child.

Prosecutors had considered bringing charges against Omaha Public Schools officials for not reporting students’ complaints about Knutson to police, but opted not to after the district made changes to its child abuse reporting policy.

NE Supreme Court Disbars Former Seward City Attorney

ne-supreme-court-gavelThe Nebraska Supreme Court has formally disbarred a former Seward city attorney.

The Associated Press reports the high court made Larry Brauer’s disbarment official Friday. He worked for Seward for nearly 23 years.

Brauer voluntarily surrendered his license to practice law in Nebraska after resigning from his job in August. At the time, he was on an unpaid leave of absence from his job.

The newspaper reports Brauer had received grievances from a Virginia woman who claimed he failed to help her family settle an estate. Another man claimed Brauer failed to represent him regarding a motorcycle accident.

Brauer denied the charges but did not show up for a formal hearing. He filed a voluntary surrender in January and said he did not challenge or contest the allegations.

Microsoft Is Latest Victim of Hackers

microsoftMicrosoft has joined the list of prominent technology companies confirming they have been hit by a recent computer hacking attack.

In a blog posting Friday, Microsoft said it had found no evidence that any customer data had been heisted.

Microsoft Corp. gave few other details about the break-in, except to say that was it similar to a hacking attack that online social networking leader Facebook Inc. disclosed last week. Facebook had said its investigation had discovered other companies had been hacked, but didn’t identify the other victims.

Like Facebook, Microsoft says it is still investigating how malicious software was planted on what it said were a small number of its computers.

Online messaging service Twitter also recently disclosed that hackers may have stolen information about 250,000 of its users.

PA Girl in Battle to Play in Catholic Football League

girls-play-footballAn 11-year-old girl who’s been playing football since kindergarten wants Philadelphia’s Roman Catholic archdiocese to overturn a boys-only rule.

Caroline Pla has played the last two years in a Catholic youth league in suburban Bucks County.

But the archdiocese let her know last year the league doesn’t accept girls.

At least a few dioceses around the country let girls play football, and about 1,600 play in U.S. high schools.

The Women’s Sports Foundation argues that co-ed sports foster mutual respect among boys and girls. And the foundation says contact sports are safe for pre-adolescents.

Philadelphia Archbishop Charles Chaput  says he’ll review the football policy this spring, after hearing from a panel of parents, coaches and doctors.

NE Supreme Court: Platte County Prosecutor Violated Terms of Plea Bargain

ne-supreme-courtThe Nebraska Supreme Court has found that a Platte County prosecutor violated terms of a plea bargain by promising to recommend probation, but later seeking jail time for a man convicted of having child pornography.

In 2011, 20-year-old Angel Landera, of Columbus, pleaded guilty to 10 counts of possessing child pornography in a plea bargain with prosecutors, who agreed to drop 10 other charges and recommend probation in exchange for Landera’s guilty pleas.

However, the prosecutor said at Landera’s sentencing that she was disturbed by the results of his presentence evaluation and that “I can’t recommend probation …”

The high court said that while prosecutors can make some jail time a condition of probation, in Landera’s case, the prosecutor argued for jail time instead of probation, violating the agreement.

During her 10 years with the Utah Highway Patrol, Lisa Steed built a reputation as an officer with a knack for nabbing drunken motorists. But she’s now facing a lawsuit in which some of those she arrested allege she filed bogus DUI reports.

Steed was taken off road patrol in April 2012 and fired in November. She was accused of violating department policies, falsifying police reports and using questionable practices when making DUI arrests.

Steed declined to comment, but her attorney says she denies the allegations. She is trying to get her job back.

The civil lawsuit includes two defendants, but dozens more are lined up to broaden it into a class action lawsuit.

Medical Helicopter Crashes in Oklahoma City Killing Two

eagle-medAuthorities say a medical helicopter has crashed in Oklahoma City, killing two people and injuring a third.

Authorities told local media that the crash happened Friday morning near the St. Ann Nursing Home in northwest Oklahoma City.

Emergency Medical Services Authority spokeswoman Lara O’Leary says no one on the ground was seriously hurt or killed and that the person taken to OU Medical Center was believed to be on the helicopter with those killed.

She says the helicopter belonged to Kansas-based company EagleMed.

A large storm system has blanketed much of the Midwest and Plains in snow, but it wasn’t immediately clear if authorities believe weather played a role in the crash.
