No Injuries in Omaha Airport Police Shooting

officer-involved-shootingOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha authorities say no one was injured after an airport police officer fired at a woman who was driving toward the officer in an SUV.

Omaha police spokesman Kevin Wiese says the 40-year-old driver was arrested Thursday after the incident at Eppley Airfield. She faces charges of first-degree felony assault of an officer, willful reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident.

Police say the woman got into an argument inside the airport before driving through a lowered arm at a payment booth. They say the Airport Authority Officer Michele Brandt and Sgt. Gary Shillito found the SUV in an airport parking lot and approached it. Police say the driver drove at Brandt, who shot at the vehicle.

Lincoln to Add 2 Officers to Fight Gang Activity

gang-crackdownLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Lincoln police plan to use a $250,000 federal grant to hire two officers to help fight gang crime.

The city applied for a U.S. Department of Justice grant in May. Lincoln mayor Chris Beutler says the two officers will likely be paid from the city’s budget after the three-year grant expires.

Public Safety Director Tom Casady says the city’s overall crime rate fell by nearly 8 percent last year. But Casady says that was largely due to a drop in property crimes.

Beutler says that meanwhile, gang member numbers have increased as has the intensity of their crimes, noting three homicides last year.

Nebraska Grand Jury Clears Authorities in 7 Deaths

jury-boxOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska grand jury has found that authorities didn’t do anything wrong in connection with seven separate deaths.

State law requires a grand jury anytime a person dies in jail, in police custody or while law enforcement officials are trying to apprehend them. A Douglas County grand jury cleared authorities Wednesday in the seven deaths, starting from August 2013.

In one of the more high-profiled cases, the jury found no wrongdoing on the part of three federal agents and two Omaha police officers in Willie Michalak’s death. The officers opened fire on him after he refused their commands and reached toward his waistband in March. He was wanted on nine felony warrants and had said he wouldn’t be arrested alive.

Nebraska City Police Investigate Grease Theft

nebraska-city-policeNEBRASKA CITY, Neb. (AP) — Authorities in eastern Nebraska say they are searching for whoever stole grease from a Burger King and accidentally spilled it across 16 city blocks.

Nebraska City Public Properties Director Dan Giittinger tells the Lincoln Journal Star (https://bit.ly/1v6qGwM ) the theft happened early Monday. He says someone pumped grease left over from cooking fried foods from a tap on the side of the building but forgot to close a valve on the tank.

Giittinger says city workers laid down a claylike material to soak up the grease. He says the cleanup cost the city about $1,000 and 14 hours of labor.

Nebraska City Police are reviewing surveillance footage.

Authorities believe the thief planned to sell the used oil to companies making biodiesel fuel or livestock feed.
