Kansas Slaying Suspect Sentenced in Neb. Chase

Michael-Engstrom(AP) — A man suspected in a Kansas slaying has been sentenced to up to 107 years for robbing a convenience store and leading police on a chase in southeast Nebraska.

Johnson County Attorney Julie Smith says Michael Engstrom was sentenced Monday for last February’s convenience store robbery in Pawnee City and chase.

Engstrom was sentenced to 60 to 75 years for firing at officers during the chase. He was also sentenced to 15 to 20 years for robbery and 8 to 12 years for a weapons charge.

Engstrom faces a murder charge in Kansas and authorities in Topeka are expected to pursue extradition.

Engstrom and his wife are accused of killing 35-year-old Ricky Mitchell and wounding a woman last Feb. 13. Jamie Engstrom is already in Kansas custody.

Tyson Workers Approve New Contract at Neb. Plant

Tyson(AP) — Workers at the Tyson Fresh Meats plant in Dakota City, Neb., will be getting raises under a new contract they approved.

Members of the United Food and Commercial Workers union approved the deal Saturday. The new five-year contract covers more than 3,500 workers.

Production workers will receive raises of $1.60 per hour over the life of the deal.

Starting pay will increase to between $13.92 and $14.10 per hour.

Top maintenance workers will be paid up to $19.95 an hour.

Tyson’s Bruce Pautsch says the contract will benefit workers and help the company succeed.

Marvin Harrington, president of the union’s Local 222, says the contract improves what workers had before without significant concessions.

Lincoln Leaders Suggest Selling City’s Arena Suite

pinnacle-bank-arena(AP) — Two Lincoln leaders want the city to sell its little-used suite in the new area, but the mayor opposes the idea.

The city has a suite in the new Pinnacle Bank Arena because it owns the facility.

Republican city councilmen Roy Christensen and Jon Camp say the city should sell the suite to raise as much as $55,000 a year.

The arena’s manager Tom Lorenz says it’s important for the city to keep the suite because entertainers sometimes request the use of a suite. Without the city-owned suite, it would be harder for the arena to land those acts.

City officials say they are developing a policy for the use of the suite.

Officials ID 5 Grand Island Men Killed in Iowa Crash

fatal-accident(AP) — Iowa authorities have released more details about the rollover crash that killed five Nebraska men this weekend.

The Iowa State Patrol says speed and alcohol use likely contributed to the crash in Adair County that killed the men from Grand Island, Neb.

All of the men were riding in a 2011 Chevrolet Camaro that veered off Interstate 80 and rolled in a field south of Menlo shortly after 8 p.m. Friday.

The car was driven by 29-year old Alex J. Paz-Lobo. The passengers in his car were 19-year old Erik Rauda, 41-year old Javier Martinez-Martin; 25-year old Denis Juvenal Sorto-Martinez; and 21-year old Jose B. Martinez.

Officials say Martinez-Martin was the only person wearing his seat belt.

(AP) — A former Beatrice State Developmental Center worker charged with abusing developmentally disabled adults has reached a plea deal.

The state and attorneys for Matthew Pangborn reached an agreement Friday. Details of the deal have not been released.

Pangborn was convicted in July 2012 of four counts of abusing a vulnerable adult and several other charges. He was sentenced to 15 to 23 years in prison.

The Nebraska Supreme Court later ordered a new trial after it determined a chart of Pangborn’s alleged abuses should not have been presented to jurors.

Pangborn will be in Gage County District Court Tuesday for re-arraignment.

Sixteen center employees were fired or suspended following an investigation into the alleged abuses. Five were charged, but most entered pleas to reduced charges.

(AP) — A Gretna woman facing tax evasion charges in Sarpy County for allegedly embezzling money now faces felony charges in Douglas County.

54-year-old Caroline Richardson was booked Friday on three counts of felony theft in connection with the embezzlement case. Additional information was not available.

Richardson is accused of embezzling more than $4 million between 2010 and 2011 from the tobacco and candy business she worked for. Colombo Candy and Tobacco Wholesale Co declined to press charges against her, but the Nebraska Department of Revenue and the Sarpy County attorney pursued the tax evasion charges.

Investigators say Richardson manipulated inventory and financial records to hide transactions into three personal bank accounts.

A message left for Richardson’s attorney was not immediately returned Saturday.

Childhood Obesity Study Coming to Fremont

UNL(AP) — A public school in Fremont is participating in a research study that aims to curb childhood obesity.

The KidQuest program, which has been tested out in South Dakota and some other Nebraska cities, will be evaluated on a larger scale through 700 students at Johnson Crossing Academic Center in Fremont.

The study involves changing how and where fifth- and sixth-grade students receive health-related education. South Dakota State University and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln are partnering together for the study through a federal grant.

Researchers hope a six-month follow-up will measure what students have learned, and whether education given this way increases physical activity. The data will be used to refine the KidQuest program and for scientific journals.

Omaha Police Arrest Man in Hate Crime Case

hate-crime(AP) — Omaha police have arrested a man in connection with an October assault that’s being investigated as a hate crime.

Police say 35-year-old Gregory Duncan was arrested Friday and charged with third-degree felony assault. The charge was enhanced from a misdemeanor to a felony because the attack is being investigated as a hate crime.

Ryan Langenegger says he was punched in the face during the early hours of Oct. 27 in the Old Market area. He says he was hit by a man who, with some other men, allegedly used derogatory names regarding his sexual orientation and those of his two friends.

Police say Duncan hit Langenegger. Additional information about the case has not been released.

Court records do not list an attorney for Duncan.

Mile Marker 420 Becomes 419.99 to Thwart Thieves

(AP) — Colorado officials think a difference of one-hundredth of a mile will be enough to stop thieves from stealing the mile marker 420 sign along Interstate 70.

Amy Ford of the Colorado Department of Transportation says the “MILE 420” sign near Stratton was stolen for the last time sometime in the last year, and officials replaced it with a sign that says “MILE 419.99.”

Ford says it’s the only “420” sign to be replaced in the state that recently legalized recreational marijuana. Most highways aren’t long enough to need one.

The number “420” has long been associated with marijuana, though its origins as a shorthand for pot are murky.

Mile 419.99, about 25 miles from the Kansas border, isn’t the only place in Colorado with a fractional mile marker. Cameron Pass in Larimer County has a “MILE 68.5” sign after frequent thefts of the “MILE 69” sign.
