Seeds Set For Dawgs, Irish at Boys Basketball State Tourney

After last night’s boys basketball district final games, the North Platte Bulldogs and St. Patrick’s Irish learned their seeds for the state tournament next week. The Dawgs will be the seventh seed in the Class A bracket. They’ll face Omaha South in first-round play at 2 PM next Thursday. The Irish ended up with the fourth seed in the C2 field. That matches them up against Hartington Cedar Catholic at 10:45 AM. ESPN Radio 1410 will broadcast both first-round contests live.

Big Night For North Platte Hoops: Irish Win District, While Dawgs Clinch Wild Card

For the first time since 1934, the North Platte Bulldogs and St. Patrick’s Irish boys basketball teams are both going to the state tournament. The Irish won their way into the Class C2 field by defeating Hemingford 51-43 in the C2-6 district final in Sidney. Joseph Clinch scored 17 points and Mark Mayfield added 15 points, and the Irish sunk 12 of 15 free throws in the fourth quarter to hold off a late Bobcats charge. The Irish are headed to state for the third straight season and the eleventh time overall. The Dawgs learned they would be the Class A Wild Card after the top five seeds in the class all won their district finals last night. It will be North Platte’s 37th trip to the state tourney, and their first since Danny Woodhead led the way to Lincoln in 2004. ESPN Radio 1410 will have coverage of the Dawgs and the Irish from the state tournament next Thursday.

Dawgs Hold Out Hope For Wild Card

The North Platte Bulldogs will be watching the scoreboard tonight. Despite their loss to Papio South in the first round of the A6 district on Saturday, the Dawgs’ state tourney dreams are still alive. If the top five seeds in Class A all win their districts tonight, the door is open for the Dawgs to earn the Wild Card spot. Omaha Central, Omaha South, Papillion-La Vista, Omaha Benson and Millard West all must win for North Platte to make their first trip to state since 2004.

Lady Dawgs Eliminated From District Tournament

The North Platte Lady Bulldogs season came to an end last night in Millard. They lost a nip-and-tuck battle to Kearney, 45-41, in the first round of the A2 district. The Lady Dawgs battled back from a 10-point second half deficit and briefly held a lead with three minutes left, but the Bearcats were able to hit free throws down the stretch to win. Ashten Hernandez led North Platte with 10 points in the loss. The Lady Dawgs finish with an 11-12 record.

BASKETBALL: Subdistricts Continue; Lady Dawgs at Districts Tonight; Dawgs to Host

The action cranks up in the boys basketball subdistricts tonight. At the C2-11 subdistrict in McCook, the St. Pat’s Irish and Hershey Panthers renew their rivalry in the first round, with the Irish looking to move towards a third straight state appearance. ESPN Radio 1410 will have the action, with pregame coverage at 5:45 and the tip-off at 6. St. Pat’s isn’t the only Lincoln County team to be a top seed. Wallace has the number one spot in the D2-10 subdistrict. They play Hayes Center tonight in Cambridge. The Brady Eagles face Anselmo-Merna in the first round of the D2-9 subdistrict in Gothenburg. And after a win over Sutherland last night, Maxwell gets a crack at undefeated Paxton in the D1-11 subdistrict.

The class A girls basketball districts open tonight as well. The North Platte Lady Bulldogs take on Kearney at Millard West High School in round one of the A-2 district. The game will tip off at 7:15, following the Millard West-Omaha Bryan game.

The Bulldog boys will host the Class A-6 district. They’ll take on Papio South on 5:30 on Saturday, with a game between Omaha North and Omaha Bryan to follow. The A-6 championship game will be held Tuesday.

BASKETBALL: Dawgs Likely to Host District; C/D Subdistricts Open Tonight

It won’t be made official by the NSAA until Tuesday, but it appears that the North Platte Bulldogs boys basketball team will be hosting a Class A district as one of the top seven teams in the class in the Wild Card standings. As of Sunday night the Dawgs sat sixth in Wild Card points. They would host a district that would bring Omaha North, Omaha Bryan and Papillion-La Vista South to the Dawghouse. First round play in the boys Class A districts begins on Saturday.

Boys basketball subdistrict play in the C and D classes begins tonight with the play-in games in subdistricts with five teams. The Maxwell Wildcats and Sutherland Sailors will face each other in the D1-11 subdistrict play-in game tonight at 7 PM at the McGahan Activities Center in North Platte. Sutherland, the fourth seed, won both regular season meetings against Maxwell. The winner of this one gets the unenviable task of facing unbeaten Paxton on Tuesday night.
