SPVA Basketball Brackets Set

The South Platte Valley Association released the brackets for the boys and girls basketball tournaments to be played next week. St. Patrick’s and Chase County are the two top seeds in the boys bracket, while Hershey and St. Pat’s are the top two in the girls tourney.

The bracket can be viewed online here. Tournament play takes place at North Platte Community College starting next Monday.

Prep Basketball Recap, 12/18

The St. Patrick’s Lady Irish keep right on winning. The third-ranked Lady Irish moved their record on the season to 7-0 with a 68-43 win at Sandhills/Thedford last night. In the boys half of that doubleheader last night, the Irish topped the Knights 55-45. The other unbeaten Lincoln County team that took the floor last night suffered their first loss of the season. The Wallace boys were defeated by Medicine Valley 53-44. It was a sweep for Med Valley, as the Lady Raiders topped the Lady Wildcats 47-40. The Paxton Tigers and Lady Tigers got off to winning starts in their home Pre-Holiday tournament. The second-ranked Tiger boys routed Maywood 82-24 while the Lady Tigers also beat Maywood, 56-31. In other action, Mullen’s boys defeated Garden County 50-26 while the Gothenburg Lady Swedes were edged by McCook 41-40.

Prep Basketball Preview, December 18

A pair of undefeated local basketball teams are on the hardwood tonight. The St. Patrick’s Lady Irish are hoping to run their season-opening winning streak to seven as they head north to take on a tough Sandhills/Thedford team as part of a girls and boys doubleheader. In the boys game, the Irish will be hoping to start a brand new winning streak after losing their last time out. Also still among the ranks of the unbeaten are the Wallace Wildcat boys, at 4-0. The Wildcats and Lady Wildcats host Medicine Valley tonight. In other doubleheader action, Mullen makes a trip to take on Garden County. In girls basketball the Gothenburg Lady Swedes will try and get back on the winning track on their home floor against McCook. And in boys action, Paxton hosts Maywood in the opener of Paxton’s Pre-Holiday tournament.

It’s a busy night on the prep hardwood. North Platte visits McCook in what could be the last regular season meeting between the two schools. The girls game tips off at 6 PM, followed by the boys game at 7:45. ESPN Radio 1410 has the games live, with pregame coverage at 5:45. The other Lincoln County schools are also playing tonight. St. Pat’s visits Valentine, Maxwell treks to Paxton, Brady hosts Hitchcock County, Hershey welcomes Kimball, Sutherland travels to Hayes Center. Also tonight in girls and boys basketball doubleheader action, Gothenburg plays host to Holdrege, Eustis-Farnam is at Maywood, Perkins County visits Sidney, Cozad treks to Central City, Chase County hosts Garden County, Med Valley hosts South Loup, Mullen welcomes Cody-Kilgore, and SMC is home to Twin Loup.

NSAA Fall Academic All-State Honorees

NCPA ACADEMIC ALL-STATE AWARDS
The Nebraska School Activities Association (NSAA) is pleased to announce the student recipients of the Fall 2012 Nebraska Chiropractic Physicians Association (NCPA) Academic All-State Awards. Since 2006 this NSAA Award Program has recognized students who meet the criteria for nomination by their school in the season of their activity. Each year the NSAA and the NCPA recognize students during Fall, Winter and Spring Seasons who are nominated by their schools for their individual academic excellence, leadership and significant contributions in their NSAA activity.

Prep Basketball Preview, December 13

Three Lincoln County boys and girls basketball teams are in action tonight. The Sutherland boys and girls play host to Wallace. The seventh-ranked Lady Sailors are off to a 4-1 start, while the Lady Wildcats are 1-2. The boys game will see the Wildcats looking to maintain their perfect start while the Sailors are hoping for their first win. The St. Patrick’s Irish and Lady Irish are also in action, hosting Gothenburg. The third-ranked Lady Irish are hoping to stay unbeaten, while the fifth-ranked Irish boys face a stern test from Gothenburg’s towering frontcourt.

Prep Basketball Results – December 11

In girls prep basketball action Tuesday night, the third-ranked St. Patrick’s Lady Irish moved to 4-0 on the season with a 74-40 home victory over Perkins County. Samantha Byrn’s 20 points led the Lady Irish offensively. Mandy O’Malley added 16 points and Brittany Lawrence was also in double figures with 13 points. The Brady Lady Eagles were unable to maintain their undefeated record. Playing an opponent two classes ahead of them, the Class D2 ninth-ranked Lady Eagles fell to Southern Valley 47-40 in Brady. Class D1’s fifth-ranked Sutherland Lady Sailors eased past Chase County 47-28. In other girls action, Wauneta-Palisade fell to Dundy County-Stratton 69-57, Cozad lost at McCook 41-28, Mullen beat South Loup 63-22 and Sandhills/Thedford routed Arcadia 66-18. In boys basketball last night, Mullen topped South Loup 73-46 and Sandhills/Thedford defeated Arcadia 77-33.

Two Irish, Two Sailors Make Fall All-State Teams

Three Lincoln County athletes earned All-State honors in their class in their fall sport from the Omaha World-Herald, as announced over the weekend. In volleyball, St. Patrick’s junior middle blocker Brittany Lawrence was named All-Class C2, while Sutherland senior middle blocker Sam Kennedy was All-Class D1. Both Lawrence and Kennedy led their teams to the state tournament. Lawrence ripped 359 kills for the fourth-place Lady Irish, while Kennedy pounded 442 kills for the third-place Lady Sailors. In football, St. Patrick’s senior Sean Keenan was named to the All-Class C2 team as a defensive back. Keenan started at quarterback and cornerback for the 10-1 Irish, who made their third consecutive trip to the state quarterfinals. The Lincoln Journal-Star gave All-State honors to Lawrence and Kennedy, and second team All-State honors in Class D1 to Sutherland senior Joli Hopping.

BASKETBALL: Bulldogs, Irish Make Season Debuts (LISTEN LIVE TONIGHT to the Lady Bulldogs on ESPN Radio 1410)

The North Platte Bulldog boys and girls basketball teams get their seasons underway tonight. The Bulldog boys return four starters in Matt Kaminski’s second year on the sidelines. They face Lincoln High at the Doghouse tonight, with the tipoff scheduled for 7:30. The Lady Bulldogs bring back two starters for head coach Mark Woodhead. They make the trip to the capital city to face Lincoln High’s Lady Links. ESPN Radio 1410 will have the broadcast of the girls game, with pregame coverage at 7:30 and the tipoff at 7:45. Also tonight, the St. Pat’s Irish and Lady Irish, both ranked in the preseason Class C2 polls, open their campaigns hosting Broken Bow. In other boys and girls hoops doubleheaders, Hershey travels to Gothenburg, Maxwell hosts SMC, Wallace is at Maywood, and Brady visits Wauneta-Palisade.
