NPCC Volleyball Signs Starr from McPherson County

McPherson County Volleyball player Ashley Starr Signs letter of intent to play volleyball at North Platte Community College. McPherson County Volleyball Coach Alan Miller, Scott Starr, and NPCC Volleyball coach Alexa Hopping look on.

North Platte Community College Lady Knights Head Volleyball coach Alexa Hopping has signed Ashley Starr to a national letter of intent for the upcoming school year.

Starr played volleyball for the McPherson County Longhorns. In her senior year, Starr had 159 kills and a .275 hitting percentage. In addition, she recorded 23 service aces and had 111 blocks.

Hopping said, “She is a hard worker and has a lot of athletic ability.”

Ashley is the daughter of Scott and Bobbi Starr.

With the addition of Starr, the number of incoming freshman to the Lady Knights volleyball program is seven. The Lady Knights previously signed Tracy Blake of Maxwell, Megan Chintala of Fleming, Colo., MaKenna Ketter of Imperial, Jessica Lovitt of Mullen, Josie Palmer of Brady and Shelby Wolever of Brush, Colo.

Morneau’s 3-Run Homer leads Colorado to 5-4 Win over Arizona

PHOENIX (AP) — Justin Morneau hit a three-run homer, Tyler Matzek pitched five effective innings before leaving with a hamstring injury and the Colorado Rockies held off the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4 Monday night.

Morneau hit his three-run shot off Chase Anderson (0-1) in the first inning and made a diving stop to save a run in the sixth. Corey Dickerson had three of Colorado’s 11 hits and drove in a run.

Matzek (2-0) allowed two runs on five hits before going out with a left hamstring injury after his first pitch of the sixth inning.

Arizona cut a three-run lead to one by the eighth inning, but John Axford worked around a pair of singles in the ninth inning for his third save after closer Adam Ottavino went on the disabled list earlier in the day.

Paul Goldschmidt had three hits for the Diamondbacks, who have lost four straight.

Gordon, Moustakas, Royals keep Kluber Winless, beat Indians

CLEVELAND (AP) — Alex Gordon, Mike Moustakas and the Kansas City Royals kept AL Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber winless this season, beating the Cleveland Indians 6-2 Monday night.

Kluber (0-3) gave up six runs, four of them earned, and 10 hits in 6 1-3 innings. After going 18-9 last year, he hasn’t won in five starts and has a 4.24 ERA.

Gordon drove in two runs, and had a go-ahead double in the sixth. Moustakas had four hits, including an RBI single in the seventh, and is 11 for 25 lifetime against Kluber.

The Indians committed a season-high three errors and have lost seven of 10.

Jason Vargas (2-1) gave up two runs in five innings.

Rockies Put Closer Ottavino on DL, Recall Rondon

PHOENIX (AP) — The Colorado Rockies have placed closer Adam Ottavino on the 15-day disabled list with right triceps inflammation and recalled right-hander Jorge Rondon from Triple-A Albuquerque.

The 29-year-old Ottavino is 1-0 with three saves in 10 appearances this season. He has allowed three hits and no runs with 13 strikeouts in 10 1-3 innings.

Rondon has made one big league appearance, tossing one inning with St. Louis against the Los Angeles Dodgers last season. He has allowed a run in 6 2-3 innings at Albuquerque this season.

The Rockies also reinstated right-hander David Hale, who had been out with a strained oblique, from the 15-day DL and optioned him to Albuquerque.

Huskers Finish Season Series with Jays

Lincoln – After winning the its first two games against the Creighton Bluejays (24-12, 8-3 Big East) this season, the Nebraska baseball team (30-16, 6-9 Big Ten) will go for the season sweep on Tuesday night when the two teams meet at TD Ameritrade Park. The game is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. be shown nationally on CBS Sports Network.

The Huskers have won five straight games over the Jays dating back to the 2013 season, but the Huskers haven’t won gone 3-0 against the Jays in a single season since 2008.

Tuesday will mark the 129th all-time meeting between Nebraska and Creighton dating back to 1902 and Nebraska holds a 77-49-2 record all-time against Creighton.

Creighton is 13-5 at TD Ameritrade this season, with one of the losses coming to the Huskers on April 14. Since loss, the Jays have posted a 4-2 record, with one of the losses coming to St. John’s at home on April 18.

The Huskers are looking to add to their road resume, as they are 6-9 on the road this year after they were swept at then #19 Iowa last weekend. Nebraska is 5-5 in its last 10 games.

Freshman Garett King will make his eighth start of the season on Tuesday night and will face the Bluejays for the third time this season. King has started each of the first two games against Creighton this year. Over 12 appearances King is 4-1 on the year with a 2.64 ERA in 44.1 innings of work with 24 strikeouts to 10 walks.

Creighton is scheduled to start right hander Jack Rogalla, who will be making his four appearance of the season and third start. In 11.1 innings the freshman for Oak Park, Ill., has a 1.59 ERA , he has given up seven hits while striking out seven and walking two.

Royals’ Edinson Volquez Drops Appeal, Starts 5-Game Ban

CLEVELAND (AP) — Kansas City Royals pitcher Edinson Volquez has dropped his appeal of a five-game suspension for his involvement in a brawl with the Chicago White Sox last week.

Volquez was to start serving his suspension against Cleveland on Monday night.

He is among four Royals players suspended for their actions in the fight last Thursday. Pitcher Yordano Ventura was given a seven-game penalty, and outfielder Lorenzo Cain and reliever Kelvin Herrera received two-game bans. All the players initially appealed.

Chicago pitchers Chris Sale and Jeff Samardzjia were each suspended five games.

Herrera also was suspended five games for throwing behind Oakand’s Brett Lawrie on April 19.

NPCC Basketball Players Named to All-Nebraska Team

Eight North Platte Community College Knights and Lady Knights basketball players were named to the All – Nebraska junior college team. The teams, compiled by the Omaha World Herald was unveiled on Sunday, April 26.

On the men’s team, Cameron Williams and Marco Pascolo were named first team selections. Williams was named honorary captain of the squad. Shyquinn Dix, Riley Rice and Matt Thomas were named honorable mention.

On the women’s team, April Stull was named to the second team. Aliyah Brown and Sarah Mahr were named honorable mention.

The All-Nebraska team is chosen from the six junior colleges in the state of Nebraska. In addition to North Platte Community College, the other schools are McCook Community College, Western Nebraska Community College, Southeast Community College, Central Community College and Northeast Community College.

Williams recently signed a national letter of intent to play for National Collegiate Athletic Association Division one program Eastern Kentucky University. Williams was the leading scorer for the Knights this past season, averaging 20.9 points per game

Pascolo has signed to play at the NCAA Division two college, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and major in electrical engineering. Pascolo led the Knights in rebounding with 7.5 rebounds per game. He also averaged 10.9 points per game.

Stull led the Lady Knights in both scoring and rebounding has not decided where to play next year. Stull averaged 15.3 points per game and 8.4 points per game.

Huskers Swept at No. 19 Iowa

Iowa City, Iowa – The No. 19 Iowa Hawkeyes (30-11, 13-2 Big Ten) finished off a three-game sweep of the Nebraska baseball team (30-16, 6-9 Big Ten) on Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep. The Hawkeyes walked off the Huskers, 3-2, in the 10^th inning of game one and then took game two by a score of 5-1 in front of a sellout crowd of 2,506 at Duane Banks Field.

With nine games left on the Big Ten schedule for the Huskers, they sit in seventh place after Sunday.

The Hawkeyes started Tyler Peyton, who was scheduled to start Friday night’s series opener before it got postponed, and he went 8.1 innings to improve to 5-3 on the year. The junior right-hander allowed one run on eight hits, while walking none and striking out nine.

Muscatine, Iowa, native Derek Burkamper started for the Huskers, but didn’t make it out of the fifth inning. The sophomore gave up a five runs (four earned) on a career-high 10 hits. The right hander didn’t walk a batter and struck out four. Jake Meyers and Colton Howell combined to throw 3.2 scoreless innings down the stretch, but NU’s offense was unable to crack Peyton.

The Huskers mounted a threat in the top of the ninth, as they had the bases loaded with two outs and Elijah Dilday at the plate as the game-tying run, but Nick Hibbing got a strikeout to finish the win and pick up his fourth save of the season.

The Hawkeyes scored first in the second when they plated a run on three singles. They then pushed their lead to 2-0 in the third with an unearned run. Dan Potempa moved to third base on a passed ball and scored on a RBI groundout by Nick Roscetti.

Iowa picked up at least a run for the third straight inning in the fourth with two runs on one hit. Burkamper hit Eric Schench-Joblinske with one out and Eric Toole made it hurt with a RBI triple. Toole then scored on a RBI ground out from Jake Mangler to push UI’s lead to 4-0. Iowa extended its lead to 5-0 in the fourth with a run on three singles.

Nebraska broke into the scoring column in the sixth, starting with a leadoff single from Ryan Boldt. Peyton came back and retired two straight Huskers and was in position to keep his shutout through six, but Blake Headley delivered his 16^th double of the season to drive in Boldt and cut UI’s lead to 5-1.

The Huskers went down in order in the seventh and eighth before threatening in the ninth.

Nebraska will be back in action Tuesday night for their final non-conference game of the season when they travel to TD Ameritrade Park for a 6:05 p.m. game against the Creighton Bluejays.

White Sox Rally for 2nd Sunday Win against Royals

CHICAGO (AP) — Conor Gillaspie hit a two-run single in Chicago’s five-run sixth inning, and the White Sox rallied to beat Kansas City 5-3 for their second win against the Royals on Sunday.

The day began with Avisail Garcia’s two-out RBI single sending Chicago to a 3-2 victory in the resumption of a game suspended by rain on Friday night. Then an error on Kansas City third baseman Mike Moustakas helped the White Sox chase Edinson Volquez on the way to just their second win in six games this season against the Royals.

John Danks (1-2) pitched six innings of three-run ball while improving to 8-1 in 18 career starts against Kansas City. David Robertson (2-0) got three outs for his third save in three opportunities after he tossed a scoreless inning for the win in the suspended game.
