Huskers Inch Closer to Spring Game

nebraska_helmetLincoln, Neb.- The Nebraska football team wrapped-up its 14th practice of the 2015 spring practice season on Wednesday afternoon. The Huskers practiced outside on the Ed and Joyanne Gass practice fields in misty conditions for just over two hours in full pads.

Nebraska Head Coach Mike Riley met with the media following Wednesday’s practice, noting that there are a few things to look for from players during the scrimmage.

“For some guys, it is about the reaction to a crowd—how they handle that, I think that is good, so we will learn a little about that,” Riley said. “Really, besides learning, it is just letting guys finish plays, finish tackles, as you know we have limited the amount of ‘full-time’ scrimmages we have had this spring. Just give them a chance to play football.”

Riley added, “There is a difference between practicing and actually finishing plays.”

According to Riley, the Huskers have not had many live scrimmages during the spring practice season for health purposes, so Saturday’s spring game will be a good indicator of how the players react at game speed.

“What we try to do when we are practicing not taking the guy down to the ground is still practice fast so you can simulate the speed of the game. I also want to get this team to the season, health wise. We try to be very thoughtful about how to balance all of that out, I have really come to the conclusion that we can get a lot done with having intermittent type periods instead of a couple of real long scrimmages on a couple different days.”

When asked how many people attended Oregon State’s spring game last season, Riley grinned and said a few thousand. Something that will be drastically different on Saturday, as more than 70,000 Husker fans are expected to swarm Memorial Stadium.

“I think that is a really good indicator for some of the things I was talking about Nebraska, there is such pride. What I have noticed—this will be my first time—my first picture of what this football deal looks like, I have been impressed with that at the baseball games, basketball games,” Riley said. “I mean the crowds, the enthusiasm for the event, every time there seems to be a game going on here—it is a big deal. I like that, people care and they love their team. I think that is just awesome.”

When asked what the spring game’s format is going to be, Coach Riley hopes that the scrimmage will look like a real football game with four quarters of action.

“I think we are going to play it, we are going to kick off, punt return—we are just going to play and we are going to run four 20 minute quarters with a running clock. We will stop the clock every time the ball (changes possession).”

As for how the teams will be split for the annual Red White Scrimmage Saturday, Riley said that the teams will be very similar to the Red and White teams used during spring practice. According to Riley there will be a good split of first, second and third teamers on both teams, with both squads having the ability to field full special teams units.

Check back at Huskers.com Friday, as the Nebraska football team will announce the rosters for this Saturday’s Red White Scrimmage.

NCAA Tourney Head Says Refs Should Have Been More Patient

Final Four 2015INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — NCAA vice president of men’s basketball Dan Gavitt says the referees Monday night in the national championship game had access to television replays on a crucial play in the last 2 minutes but had already decided to give the ball to Duke when CBS showed a magnified view of the play.

The NCAA Tournament head says the referees should have been a little more “patient” before making the ruling after Wisconsin’s Bronson Koenig missed a layup with 1:54 left and the Badgers trailing 63-58.

In a scramble for the rebound, the referees initially ruled it went off a Wisconsin player even though replays appeared to show the ball was clearly touched by a Duke play. But the call was not reversed, and the Blue Devils went on to win 68-63.

Momentum Building for 2015 State Games of America

state-games-of-americaLINCOLN, Neb. (April 9, 2015) The 2015 State Games of America (SGA) recently passed the 1,000 entry milestone, and SGA officials say the pace of registrations is accelerating. Athletes from 39 states and the District of Columbia have signed up for SGA 2015, scheduled for July 28–August 2 in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Iowa grandmother Kay Glynn will be jumping and vaulting in her third State Games of America competition. Glynn, 62, of Hastings, Iowa, was at SGA 2001 in St. Louis, Missouri, and SGA 2005 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She’s won a lot of medals since renewing her track and field career at age 48 in the Iowa Games, but that’s not what she remembers most about the State Games of America events.

“I enjoyed the people and the camaraderie. No one is a stranger,” said Glynn. “I like to watch the kids because they remind me how much fun it is to play. And I hope I can inspire them to continue competing as they get older.”

Glynn is entered in the pole vault, high jump, long jump and triple jump. She’s looking forward to SGA 2015 because it’s a national event that’s close to home.

Track and field has the most entries so far with nearly 150 athletes. Archery, swimming, bowling and pickleball are also in the top five. SGA 2015 offers more than 60 events, including a number of developing sports which do not require pre-qualification. It’s expected to be the largest State Games of America event ever with about 20,000 participants. The Nebraska Sports Council (NSC) is organizing SGA 2015, and NSC Executive Director Dave Mlnarik expects entries to pick up as the May 15 deadline for non-Nebraska entries approaches.

“For the athletes, SGA 2015 offers great competition and a chance to make new friends from across the nation. But beyond the athletic events, we’re planning a great weekend of entertainment, starting with an inspiring opening ceremonies at Memorial Stadium, home of the Nebraska Cornhuskers,” said Mlnarik. “This will be a memorable experience for competitors of all ages and abilities.”

Details regarding events, eligibility, hotel accommodations and the host city of Lincoln are available at SGA2015.com. Follow State Games of America on Facebook and Twitter for the latest updates.

MLB Launches ‘Franchise Four’ Promotion

mlb bigNEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball has launched a “Franchise Four” promotion for fans to vote for the players they think had the most impact on each of the 30 teams.

Eight players are listed for each team. Voting, conducted on MLB.com, also will be held for the greatest living players, greatest Negro Leagues players and baseball’s greatest pioneers.

Balloting began Wednesday and ends May 8. Winners will be announced before the All-Star Game in Cincinnati in July 14.

Joe DiMaggio was voted baseball’s greatest living player in 1969 and honored at the sport’s centennial dinner before that year’s All-Star Game in Washington, D.C. Fans voted for nominations then, and winners in several categories were selected by reporters and broadcasters.

Fans selected an All-Century team in 1999.

Players on the current ballot were picked by MLB official historian John Thorn and representatives from the Baseball Writers’ Association of American, the Elias Sports Bureau, MLB.com and the MLB Network.
