Konerko, Rollins 1st Co-Winners of Clemente Award

mlb bigSAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Retiring White Sox star Paul Konerko and Philadelphia shortstop Jimmy Rollins are the first co-winners of Major League Baseball’s Roberto Clement Award.

The annual honor is given for contributions on and off the field that best represent the sport and is named for the Pittsburgh Pirates Hall of Famer, who died on Dec. 31, 1972, in a plane crash while on a humanitarian mission to assist earthquake victims in Nicaragua.

Konerko founded the “Bring Me Home Campaign,” which also includes a pair of former teammates: retired great Jim Thome and the Los Angeles Angels’ Gordon Beckham. The campaign says it has raised nearly $450,000 to assist foster children in Illinois.

Rollins developed JRoll’s Aces in 2007 through The Rollins Family Foundation to provide tickets to children in disadvantaged areas who excel in academics.

Big Audiences for New CBS Thursday Night NFL Games

DenverBroncosNEW YORK (AP) — CBS’s new Thursday night NFL package drew big audiences despite a string of blowouts.

The Broncos’ 35-21 win over the Chargers on Thursday was the last of seven straight games to air on CBS, with simulcasts on NFL Network. The broadcasts now switch to NFL Network only.

Five of the matchups were decided by at least two touchdowns, including three by more than 30 points.

The seven games still averaged 16.5 million viewers between CBS and NFL Network, nearly double the 8.5 million for last year’s games that aired on NFL Network with simulcasts on local channels in each team’s home market. CBS is available in nearly 60 percent more households than NFL Network.

Union Questions NFL’s Domestic Violence Plan

nfl_logo2011-medNEW YORK (AP) — The players’ union has questioned why the NFL’s domestic violence training and education program “treats all players as perpetrators.”

In a memo sent to NFL Players Association members by Executive Director DeMaurice Smith and obtained by The Associated Press, the union also said the plan “doesn’t build a positive consensus to warning signs.”

Smith described two meetings this month with the league in which an NFLPA commission was briefed on the league’s approach to educating players, coaches, executives, owners and NFL personnel about domestic violence. He wrote that a “good overview of domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse” was presented. But “it did not address larger issues of violence in and outside of the home.”

Royals Shift Cain to Tricky Right Field for Game 3

Lorenzo-Cain-Kansas-City-RoSAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Royals outfielder Lorenzo Cain has been moved from center field to right for Game 3 of the World Series to boost defense in one of AT&T Park’s trickiest positions.

Kansas City manager Ned Yost made the move Friday night with the best-of-seven matchup 1-all. Usual right fielder Nori Aoki is not in the starting lineup, while Jarrod Dyson is starting in center field and batting eighth.

Alex Gordon, who batted sixth in Games 1 and 2 this week at Kauffman Stadium, has moved up into the No. 2 hole as the Royals lose their designated hitter — Billy Butler — in the NL ballpark.

With the loss of the DH, San Francisco’s Michael Morse is out. The rest of the lineup the same behind starter Tim Hudson, making his World Series debut at age 39 and after 16 major league seasons.

Huskers Take on Big Ten Leader Wisconsin

Nebraska-Volleyball-HuskersThe No. 14 Nebraska volleyball team continues a four-match road stretch with a 4 p.m. match at No. 5 Wisconsin on Sunday on ESPN2. The Huskers (12-6, 6-3 Big Ten) have split their Big Ten matches each of the last three weeks, winning the first and dropping the second each week, but will look to reverse that trend in Madison. Nebraska came back from a 2-0 deficit to topple No. 25 Minnesota on Wednesday, while Wisconsin swept Iowa at home. The Badgers (17-2) lead the Big Ten with an 8-1 conference record and have not let up since their run to the NCAA national championship match last season. Sunday’s match will mark NU’s seventh match against a ranked opponent this season. After Sunday at Wisconsin, the Huskers will have faced the current Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 5 teams in the AVCA Coaches Poll.

Media Information
Sunday’s match will be televised on ESPN2 and streamed online at WatchESPN.com. Fans can also listen to the action with John Baylor and Lindsay Peterson on the 25-station Husker Sports Network, including B107.3 FM in Lincoln and The Wolf 93.3 FM in Omaha. Fans inside and outside the state of Nebraska will also be able to catch the live audio feed on Huskers.com for free. Live stats will be available at Huskers.com as well.

Series History
The Huskers lead the all-time series 17-1-1 with Wisconsin’s lone win coming on Oct. 28, 1978. The Huskers have won 17 straight after the series began with a tie and a Wisconsin victory, but last year’s matches went five and four sets, respectively. Nebraska won 3-1 (18-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-19) in Madison on Nov. 8. Kadie Rolfzen had 19 kills and 17 digs, while Amber Rolfzen had eight kills and nine digs.

Last Time Out
The 14th-ranked Nebraska volleyball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit for an epic 3-2 (21-25, 16-25, 25-21, 25-19, 15-7) comeback win at No. 25 Minnesota on Wednesday. The Huskers found themselves in a deep hole after dropping the first two sets and falling behind 16-13 in the third set. But just as they did at Minnesota in 2011, the Huskers roared back to win the match in five. Behind the arm of Kelsey Fien, the Huskers rallied to the 25-21 third-set victory, controlled the fourth set and ended the match on a dominating 8-0 run. Kadie Rolfzen had 17 kills and 14 digs to lead the Huskers, while Fien had 14 kills over the last three sets off the bench. Mary Pollmiller had a season-best 54 assists.

Orange-Clad Marlins Fan Stands out at World Series

Laurence Leavy Marlins ManMIAMI (AP) — Among the standouts at the World Series has been a Miami Marlins fan in the front row behind home plate.

Laurence Leavy’s orange Marlins jersey made him easy to spot at Games 1 and 2 amid a sea of Kansas City Royals blue. He says a Royals official approached him offering to move him to the team owner’s suite, but Leavy (pronounced Leh’-vee) declined.

Two nights of network TV air time made Leavy a celebrity. Since the World Series began, his followers on Twitter have climbed from 175 to 6,800.

The 58-year-old South Florida attorney describes himself as a sports geek who can afford to go to games around the country because he has no wife or children. He has been traveling to big events for 15 years, buying tickets on the Internet.
