Steel Use Power Play To Slip Past Storm

tcstormKEARNEY, Neb. – Two power play goals in the third period propelled the Chicago Steel (2-2-1) to a 2-1 win over the Tri-City Storm (3-2-0) at the Viaero Event Center on Saturday night.

The lone Tri-City goal was scored by forward Joel Herbert in the second period. For Herbert, the tally was his first in USHL play, and his first point in a Storm uniform.

Alec Dillon made 29 saves for the Storm in the loss, coming within minutes of his second consecutive shutout.

Tri-City was ahead 1-0 through two periods, but lost the lead after taking two consecutive bench minor penalties for too many men on the ice.

The Steel capitalized, scoring with the man advantage on both opportunities. Connor Murphy tallied the first goal of the weekend for Chicago and Robby Jackson followed it up with a second power play tally just over two minutes later.

Chicago netminder John Lethemon stopped 34 shots for the Steel to get the win.

Tri-City led the shot count in the game, 35-31.

The Storm are back at home next weekend, as the Green Bay Gamblers come to Kearney for a two-game series. Friday night’s game begins at 7:30, while Saturday’s starts at 3:05.

Notes: The Storm scratched forwards Matthew Freytag, Nolan Aibel and Wade Allison, along with defenseman Jason Krych…

Royals Beat Orioles 6-4 for 2-0 Lead in ALCS

kc-royalsBALTIMORE (AP) — Alcides Escobar doubled in the go-ahead run in the ninth inning, Mike Moustakas extended his home run-binge and the Kansas City Royals remained perfect in the playoffs, beating the Baltimore Orioles 6-4 Saturday for a 2-0 lead in the AL Championship Series.

Lorenzo Cain had four hits, scored twice and drove in a run for the wild-card Royals, who are 6-0 in the playoffs this year, including 4-0 on the road.

Moustakas hit his fourth home run of the playoffs. Overall, Kansas City has won nine straight postseason games, a string dating way back to the 1985 World Series.

The best-of-seven series shifts to Kansas City on Monday for Game 3 with the Royals halfway toward reaching the World Series once again. Former Oriole Jeremy Guthrie will start for the Royals against either Wei-Yin Chen or Miguel Gonzalez.

Last Suspect Surrenders in High School Hazing Case

fox-footballPARLIN, N.J. (AP) — The last of seven high school students facing sex crime charges amid a hazing investigation that canceled a New Jersey prep football team’s season has surrendered to authorities.

Middlesex County prosecutors say the youth surrendered early Saturday, but declined to release further information due to the defendant’s age.

The six other students, ranging in age from 15 to 17, were arrested Friday night in connection with the assaults at regional football power Sayreville War Memorial High School.

The district canceled the remainder of football team’s season after the school superintendent said there was evidence of pervasive harassment, intimidation and bullying.

Prosecutors say the youths must appear before a Family Court judge but no hearing has been scheduled.

Royals-Orioles Game Averages 5.9 Million Viewers

kc-royalsNEW YORK (AP) — The Kansas City Royals’ extra-innings victory in the AL Championship Series opener averaged 5.9 million total viewers — up 9 percent from last year’s comparable game.

The Royals won 8-6 in the 10th inning Friday night in Baltimore. Kansas City and Baltimore are the two smallest markets in ALCS history.

The telecast peaked with 6.8 million viewers from midnight to 12:15 a.m. EDT, helping TBS win the night across all of cable television.

Last year’s comparable game was the St. Louis Cardinals’ 3-2, 13-inning victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 1 of the NLCS.

Former Husker Larson-Burbach Leads USA to Gold Medal Match

Jordan Larson-BurbachMilan, Italy – Behind a match-high 13 kills from former Husker Jordan Larson-Burbach, the U.S. Women’s Volleyball National Team swept previously unbeaten Brazil 3-0 in the semifinals of the FIVB World Championships on Saturday to advance to Sunday’s final at 1 p.m. (CT).

Larson-Burbach, along with former Huskers Kayla Banwarth and Kelsey Robinson, and Team USA avenged a sweep to Brazil in pool play last week with a resounding 25-18, 29-27, 25-20 win on Saturday. Brazil was 11-0 at the tournament and is the two-time defending Olympic champions, but was no match for the Americans on Saturday.

The U.S. women are seeking their first gold medal in any of the three volleyball majors – the Olympic Games, World Cup and World Championship.

USA will face either host Italy or China on Sunday. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. (CT) and will be broadcast live online at UniversalSports.com and will be tape delayed on the Universal Sports channel on TV later in the afternoon.

Judge: NFL Concussion Opt-Outs Due by Tuesday

nfl_logo2011-medPHILADELPHIA (AP) — Tuesday remains the deadline to opt out of the NFL’s settlement of concussion claims after a judge in Philadelphia denied an extension request.

Lawyers for some retired players want the deadline delayed until after a Nov. 19 fairness hearing on the settlement. But Senior U.S. District Judge Anita Brody denied their request this week.

The lead lawyers who negotiated the minimum $765 million deal oppose the delay. They say many of the nearly 20,000 former players need the money quickly.

The plan would pay $1 million or more to retirees with the most severe neurological problems, such as Parkinson’s disease.

But the average award for Alzheimer’s disease or dementia would be about $190,000.

The deal may not be finalized by year’s end. Brody will take written briefs through mid-December.

Gordon-Led Royals Beat Orioles 8-6 in ALCS

kc-royalsBALTIMORE (AP) — Alex Gordon hit a tiebreaking homer in the 10th inning, Mike Moustakas added a two-run shot and the Kansas City Royals defeated the Baltimore Orioles 8-6 Friday night in the opener of the AL Championship Series.

Earlier, Gordon doubled in three runs, was picked off first base, made a great catch in left field and got hit in the neck with a pitch. His homer off Darren O’Day sent the Royals toward their fourth extra-inning victory in five games this postseason.

The Orioles tried to rally in the 10th. Pinch-hitter Delmon Young hit an RBI single with two outs, but closer Greg Holland retired Nick Markakis on a grounder with two runners on for the final out in the rain shortly before 1 a.m.

Game 2 is Saturday afternoon. Rookie right-hander Yordano Ventura makes his second postseason start for the Royals against either Wei-Yin Chen or Bud Norris.

Dillon, Storm Shut Out Steel 4-0

tcstormKEARNEY, Neb. – Alec Dillon stopped everything that came his way Friday night, leading the Tri-City Storm (3-1-0) to a 4-0 shutout win over the Chicago Steel (1-2-1) at the Viaero Event Center.

The Storm got goals from Cameron Spicer, Garrett Gamez, Chris Wilkie and Mason Appleton in the win. Dillon had 39 saves, picking up his first USHL shutout. In four appearances this season, Dillon has allowed just four goals.

Spicer opened the scoring at 11:54 of the first, sneaking into the offensive zone and taking a pass from forward Nick Master. The defenseman lifted the puck over Steel goaltender Cale Morris for his first USHL goal. Gamez was credited with the second assist on what ended up being the game-winning goal.

It was also Gamez who increased the Storm lead to 2-0 in the second, scoring off a great feed from defenseman Mattias Goransson. The team’s captain now has two goals and two assists in the team’s four games.

Later in the middle period, Wilkie made it 3-0, scoring on a wrist shot from the slot. Forward Jake Wahlin and defenseman Kevin Kerr picked up assists on the play and Tri-City was in control of the game after two frames.

Appleton added a tally in the third for his second goal of the season with assists to Matthew Freytag and Cody Milan.

Morris made 30 saves for Chicago in defeat, and Chicago outshot Tri-City 39-34 in the game.

The two teams will complete a weekend series on Saturday night at the Viaero Event Center. Game time is 7:05 p.m.

Notes: The Storm scratched forwards Aleksi Ainali and Wade Allison, along with defenseman Jason Krych. Defenseman Jalen Schulz was also scratched, serving the final night of three-game suspension…

Huskers Fight Past Spartans for 3-1 Win

Nebraska-Volleyball-HuskersEast Lansing, Mich. – The No. 8 Nebraska volleyball team battled in a difficult environment to a 3-1 (25-20, 25-18, 22-25, 25-23) win over Michigan State at Jenison Field House on Friday night.

The Huskers improved to 10-4 on the season and 4-1 in the Big Ten with their third road win this season in as many tries. Michigan State dropped to 9-7 on the season and 2-3 in Big Ten play.

The win was the 1,200th in school history for the Huskers and also snapped a two-match losing streak to the Spartans in East Lansing. Nebraska last won in East Lansing in 2011.

Kadie Rolfzen had her fourth double-double of the season with 16 kills and 12 digs. Alicia Ostrander added 12 kills, and Amber Rolfzen had 10 kills. Meghan Haggerty had five kills and four blocks, and Kira Larson had a career-high four kills and three blocks in her first career start. Mary Pollmiller had 43 assists, her most since Sept. 6 against Bakersfield, and Justine Wong-Orantes led four Huskers in double-digit digs with 19.

Nebraska hit .190 for the match but held Michigan State to a .152 clip. The Huskers outblocked the Spartans 8-6 and outdug them 66-61. The Huskers had eight service aces, their second-best output this season.

The Huskers fell behind 4-1 in set one and despite answering with three straight points were unable to grab an early lead. The Spartans extended the lead to 18-13 with a 6-2 spurt, as the Huskers suffered four service errors to that point. But then Nebraska got back-to-back kills from Ostrander before Michigan State hit long to cut it to 18-16. After Michigan State committed a net violation, Kadie Rolfzen killed and Alexa Ethridge continued her excellent serving run with an ace. Michigan State committed an attacking error, and Haggerty and Pollmiller stuffed the Spartans for a 21-18 lead before the Spartans misfired again, pushing the Nebraska run to 9-0 and the lead to 22-18. Michigan State cut the deficit in half with consecutive points, but that was the last time the Spartans would score in the set as the Huskers completed the comeback with a 25-20 win, ending the set on a 12-2 run.

In set two, the Huskers broke free from a 3-3 deadlock with a 4-0 run to go up 7-3, with two Kadie Rolfzen kills starting and finishing the run. Larson tallied a block with Pollmiller and a kill to give Nebraska an 11-6 advantage. Kadie Rolfzen’s seventh kill of the match pushed the NU lead to 15-8. A 4-0 run put Nebraska up 20-10 after another Kadie Rolfzen kill. An Ostrander kill gave the Huskers set point at 24-17 and NU finished things off at 25-18 on a Spartan error. The Huskers hit .351 in the second set with 16 kills and just three errors.

The Huskers led 6-4 in set three before Michigan State put together a 6-0 run for a 10-6 lead. But the Huskers didn’t go away, as Kadie Rolfzen and Ostrander posted kills, and Kadie Rolfzen served an ace to cut it to 10-9 and force a Spartan timeout. But out of the timeout, Michigan State scored five straight to go up 15-9 and cause NU to take a timeout. A service ace by Kristen Muir out of the timeout and a Husker attacking error continued the run at 7-0 though, as Nebraska fell down 17-9. The Huskers pulled within 22-20 on kills by Amber Rolfzen and Pollmiller before a Townsend service ace. But after a Spartan timeout, Townsend’s serve found the net and gave MSU a 23-20 lead. Kadie Rolfzen’s kill made it 23-21, but Michigan State closed out the 25-22 win.

The Huskers used a 4-0 spurt in set four to rally from a 10-8 deficit and go up 12-10, with Ethridge again on the service line. Michigan State reclaimed a 14-13 lead though before Haggerty killed to level the score. The Spartans stayed in front though at 17-15 before hitting wide twice to tie it at 17-17 again. Tied at 19-19, Sydney Townsend came up the most difficult of her career-high 11 digs to keep a play alive that resulted in a 20-19 Husker lead. Haggerty and Pollmiller thwarted a Spartan attack for a 21-19 lead. Later, Amber Rolfzen came up with a big kill to give Nebraska 23-21 lead, but the Huskers then hit long to make it 23-22. Kadie Rolfzen stepped up and recorded the final two points of the match for NU to give the Huskers a 25-23 fourth-set victory.

The Huskers finish their Michigan road trip in Ann Arbor against Michigan on Sunday at Noon (CT).
