Donovan Hits Post in US Finale, 1-1 vs Ecuador

US Soccer LogoEAST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Landon Donovan nearly scored in his 157th and final appearance with the U.S. national team, hitting a post in the 25th minute of the Americans’ 1-1 tie against Ecuador in an exhibition Friday night.

The 32-year-old Los Angeles Galaxy forward, who is retiring after Major League Soccer’s season, ran onto Jozy Altidore’s backheel pass and beat goalkeeper Maximo Banguera with a 12-yard shot. But the ball clanked off the post, and Banguera beat Donovan to the rebound.

Donovan came out in the 41st minute and was applauded and cheered by the crowd of 36,265 at Rentschler Field. He finished his national career with 57 goals and 58 assists, both American records.

Donovan contributed to Mix Diskerud’s fifth-minute goal, crossing the ball from the left flank. After Altidore failed to connect, DeAndre Yedlin passed the ball in front of the goal, where Diskerud scored from 12 yards.

Enner Valencia tied it in the 88th minute with a shot from outside the penalty area that curled around defender Tim Ream and bounced in, with goalkeeper Brad Guzan about 3 yards away.

Royals Play Pat Hand; Orioles Add Matusz for ALCS

kc-royalsBALTIMORE (AP) — The Kansas City Royals will enter the AL Championship Series with the same 25-man roster they used in a sweep of the Los Angeles Angels.

Manager Ned Yost has an 11-man pitching staff, six outfielders, five infielders, designated hitter Billy Butler and catchers Salvador Perez and Erik Kratz.

Baltimore’s roster, as expected, does not include suspended first baseman Chris Davis.

The Orioles have an 11-man pitching staff that includes left-handed reliever Brian Matusz. He replaced Ubaldo Jimenez, who was part of Baltimore’s roster for the ALDS.

That was the only change in manager Buck Showalter’s roster.

Game 1 is scheduled for Friday night, weather permitting.

Day Suffers Season-Ending Knee Injury

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballLincoln – University of Nebraska men’s basketball coach Tim Miles announced Thursday that freshman forward B.J. Day suffered season-ending injury to his left knee during practice this week.

The torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) was revealed during an MRI examination Thursday, and men’s basketball athletic trainer R.J. Pietig said that surgery will be scheduled in the near future. Day will miss the 2014-15 season and will apply for a medical redshirt to have four years of eligibility remaining.

“It is difficult because B.J. has worked hard in the offseason to get ready for the start of practice,” Miles said. “We look forward to him beginning his rehab, and our goal is to have him ready for the start of next season.”

Day, who is the son of former Husker standout Bernard Day, played at Lincoln Southeast High School, averaging 14.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game last season to earn second-team Class A all-state honors.

BTN to Debut New Film “Unbeaten: The Life of Brook Berringer”

Brook Berringer Nebraska Huskers UnbeatenCHICAGO – The story of Brook Berringer, a beloved University of Nebraska quarterback who is best remembered for his resilience and selflessness in the face of adversity and his tragic death two days before the NFL Draft, is legendary in the Cornhusker state.

On Oct. 18, viewers across the country will learn more about his life and enduring spirit when BTN Originals debuts Unbeaten: The Life of Brook Berringer, as told through the eyes of the producers who bring fans the BTN signature series The Journey and Tiebreaker, BTN’s first feature-length documentary.  The hour-long documentary, presented by Physicians Mutual, airs at approximately 10:30 PM ET, immediately following the Nebraska at Northwestern game on BTN/BTN2Go.

Bill Friedman, BTN’s coordinating producer for original programming, said Unbeaten is just not a sports story, but a story about human character. “Brook was way ahead of his time. He built a reputation for giving back, and he is beloved because so many think he represents what a Nebraskan should be. His life is a great college football story that happens to take place in Nebraska.”

Berringer began the 1994 season as the Huskers’ backup quarterback but was thrust into the starting role when Heisman Trophy candidate Tommie Frazier was diagnosed with blood clots. Berringer helped lead the team to seven straight wins and a berth in the Orange Bowl against Miami. While Frazier returned to start the game, Berringer entered in the second quarter and helped spark a comeback. The win capped off the undefeated season, and gave legendary Nebraska Head Coach Tom Osborne his first National Championship.

As the 1995 season dawned, Berringer and Frazier engaged in a spirited battle for the starting job – a job that Frazier eventually won by a narrow margin. Berringer selflessly accepted his backup role that season, as Frazier and the Huskers rolled to a second straight National Championship.

The following spring, two days prior to the 1996 NFL Draft, Berringer lost control of the two-seater plane he was piloting and died when the plane crashed. He was 22 years old.

Unbeaten features rare, archival footage of Berringer on camera, highlights of some key Nebraska games leading up to the National Championship and interviews with Frazier, Osborne, and Brook’s mother, Jan Berringer, who shares some of the thousands of letters she received in the wake of his passing.

The BTN Originals crew also was in Lincoln this September, when the 1994 championship team was honored prior to the Huskers’ game against Miami. The crew captured exclusive footage and an interview with Berringer’s teenage nephew, who walked onto the field wearing a No. 18 jersey in honor of the uncle he never met.

Unbeaten is directed by Matthew Engel and Kevin Shaw, who together also directed Tiebreaker, the story of the 1973 Ohio State-Michigan football game that ended in a 10-10 tie and its controversial aftermath.

The premiere of Unbeaten will have limited commercial interruptions.

Seven Interstate 80 Lakes in Lincoln County Slated for Angler Access Improvements

Nebraska_game_and_parksAnglers will enjoy improved access at seven I80 Lakes in Lincoln County. The lakes slated for improvements are Birdwood, Hershey, Fremont Slough, West Maxwell, West Brady, Brady and West Gothenburg. The old borrow pits constructed at the same time as the interstate reside on Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) owned and managed by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

These lakes provide valuable and productive fisheries for local citizens and interstate travelers alike with locations adjacent to the interstate.

The projects include the development of angler access pads to enhance fishing for bank anglers, some will be handicap accessible.  The angler access pads will be constructed perpendicular to the shoreline extending approximately 25 feet providing improved access to deeper waters clear of trees and obstructions. The construction of paved boat ramps will be included at each of the lakes, improving existing launch sites for boat anglers.

Improvements are planned to begin mid-October at Birdwood Lake west of North Platte, construction will move to Hershey WMA Lake before continuing east to the other five lakes. Construction will be done by Jeffres Excavating of Burwell. Jeffres has completed several aquatic habitat reconstruction projects in the past.

The I-80 Lakes will remain open during most of the construction; however as construction gets underway, large portions of each lake will be closed. Construction activity will be staggered working with winter weather and project management. The projects are expected to be complete by summer 2015.

The improvements were made possible by the Nebraska Game and Park’s Aquatic Habitat and Angler Access Programs funded by the purchase of fishing permits and partially with Federal Sportfish Restoration Program funds collected through a tax on fishing equipment and motorboat fuel.
