Big Ten Statement on NCAA Lifting Penn State’s Postseason Ban

Penn State Nittany Lions LogoRosemont, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference, through its Council of Presidents and Chancellors (COPC), has agreed today to restore Penn State’s eligibility for the Big Ten Football Championship Game. The agreement follows the announcement today, by the NCAA, to further modify sanctions set forth in the Consent Decree entered into with Penn State on July 23, 2012, including the elimination of Penn State’s postseason football ban, effective immediately, and the restoration of its full complement of football scholarships beginning with the 2015-16 academic year.  As a result of the announcement, based strongly on recommendations by Independent Athletics Integrity Monitor Senator George Mitchell, Penn State will be eligible to compete in both the Big Ten Football Championship Game and a bowl game, beginning with the current season.

The $60 million fine, vacation of wins from 1998-2011, Athletics Integrity Agreement (AIA), and five-year probation initially imposed by the NCAA will remain in effect, as will the official censure, five-year probation and monetary fine equal to Penn State’s Big Ten bowl revenue share during the probationary period initially imposed by the Big Ten COPC.

The NCAA’s decision to modify the Consent Decree was based on recommendations by Senator Mitchell, who has been serving since August 2012 as the independent Athletics Integrity Monitor responsible for overseeing Penn State’s implementation of the reforms set forth in the AIA.  The AIA was entered into on August 29, 2012, by the NCAA, the Big Ten and Penn State as one of the requirements of the Consent Decree.

As a party to the AIA, the Big Ten COPC met with Senator Mitchell on Monday, September 8, and received his report on Penn State’s progress. Senator Mitchell’s briefing included a recommendation that the NCAA reduce the postseason ban effective immediately and restore full scholarship availability beginning with the 2015-16 academic year. Mitchell’s recommendation was based on the significant progress Penn State has continually made in its compliance and reform efforts over the last two years and focused exclusively on NCAA penalties that directly impacted student-athletes.

“Following our briefing with Senator Mitchell, the COPC reached consensus agreement to support his latest recommendation and also agreed to restore the school’s eligibility for the Big Ten Football Championship Game, which ran concurrently with the NCAA postseason bowl ban” said COPC Chair and Iowa President Sally Mason.  “We support the NCAA announcement acting on that recommendation, thank Senator Mitchell for his dedicated service and appreciate Penn State’s ongoing commitment to improvement.”

Johnson, DeVito to Miss Rest of Chiefs Season

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Pro Bowl linebacker Derrick Johnson and starting defensive tackle Mike DeVito will miss the remainder of the Kansas City Chiefs’ season after MRI exams confirmed that both players ruptured their right Achilles tendons in Sunday’s loss to Tennessee.

Johnson went down without getting touched near the end of the first half. Eight plays later, early in the second half, DeVito went down at nearly the same spot on the field.

The blows are significant to a Chiefs team that was already missing several key pieces to injuries and suspensions, and was routed 26-10 by the Titans at Arrowhead Stadium. Johnson had four tackles before getting carted off the field, moving him within 15 of 1,000 for his career. That would surpass Gary Spani for the franchise record.

League, Union Talking Drug Policy

nfl_logo2011-medNEW YORK (AP) — The NFL and the players’ union are meeting Monday to discuss the league’s drug policies.

Both sides are considering potential changes to the policies and to discipline for players who violate them. Human growth hormone and marijuana are topics they are talking about, along with driving under the influence.

The league and the union are in agreement that discipline for DUIs needs to be tougher. But an NFL proposal that penalties be handed out before the legal process has been exhausted met with strong opposition from the players.

Such a change also would apply to team employees and executives, coaches and league employees.

Talks picked up in recent weeks, although the union has labeled reports that changes are imminent as “premature.”

Lincoln – Nebraska punter Sam Foltz was honored for his performance against McNeese State on Saturday, as he was named Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week. It is the first time the Grand Island native has received the Big Ten honor, and marks the second straight week a Husker has received a Big Ten weekly award.

Foltz averaged a career-best 51.2 yards on six punts in Nebraska’s 31-24 win over McNeese State on Saturday. Four of his six punts were placed inside the 20-yard line, helping the Huskers win the field position battle by more than 16 yards per possession. His four punts inside the 20 were the second-highest number of his career. In addition, five of his six punts went at least 50 yards, including a 61-yarder in the fourth quarter, while Nebraska had a net punting average of 48.0 yards on his six kicks.

His 61-yard punt in the fourth quarter was the third-longest punt of his Husker career, while all of his five second-half punts went for at least 50 yards. In addition, Foltz was also named the National Punter of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards

The Huskers return to action Saturday night as they travel to Fresno State. Kickoff is set for 9:30 p.m. (CT) on the CBS College Sports Network and statewide on the Husker Sports Radio Network.

Abdullah earned the honored as he totaled 184 all-purpose yards in a 31-24 win over McNeese State. His 58-yard touchdown reception with 20 seconds left, which was the No. 1 play on ESPN’s SportsCenter on Saturday, provided the winning margin for the Huskers. It was one of three receptions for the Husker I-back, as he finished with a career-high 96 receiving yards on three catches. His 96 receiving yards were the most by a Husker I-back since 2007. In addition, he also had 54 yards and a scoring run on 17 carries and had a 34-yard kickoff return.

Abdullah is now 247 yards shy of Nebraska’s all-purpose yards record of 5,686 held by 1972 Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Rodgers.

Broncos Hold on to Beat Colts 31-24

DenverBroncosDENVER (AP) — Peyton Manning sure didn’t need Wes Welker in this heart-pounding opener. He threw three touchdown passes to tight end Julius Thomas in the first half and the Denver Broncos held on to beat the Indianapolis Colts 31-24 on Sunday night.

In his second try, Manning beat his old team and joined Brett Favre as the only quarterbacks to beat each of the current 32 NFL franchises.

The Broncos raced out to a 24-0 lead thanks to Thomas, then turned to their revamped defense to fend off a furious comeback attempt by Andrew Luck, who was working wonders behind a patchwork offensive line.

Luck brought the Colts within a touchdown when he found Hakeem Nicks for a 9-yard scoring strike with 3:26 remaining. But Indy’s last drive stalled at midfield when rookie Bradley Roby broke up a fourth-and-6 pass to Reggie Wayne.

Welker is serving a four-game suspension for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs. But if there’s an offense that can weather the loss of the NFL’s premier slot receiver, it’s the Broncos.

Storm Sweep Des Moines In Preseason Opener

tcstormOMAHA, Neb. – In a preseason opening day-night doubleheader, the Tri-City Storm swept the Des Moines Buccaneers, winning 5-2 in the afternoon and finishing the day with a 3-2 shootout victory in the nightcap.

In Game 1, Tri-City had a slow start to the first period, but turned it on in the second frame, scoring five straight times.

Des Moines took a 1-0 lead into the locker room at the conclusion of the first on a goal by forward Ryan Dmowski.

After evening the game, Tri-City came to life and took control. Defenseman Cam Spicer made it 2-1, scoring a goal off a face-off that had been won by center Conner Valesano.

Additional goals were tallied by Mark Petaccio and Joel Herbert before Milan made it 5-1 with his second strike of the period and put the game out of reach for the Buccaneers.

Brendan Shane had the second Des Moines goal of the game that closed the scoring in the opener.

In Game 2, Wilkie got the Storm out in front with the only score of the first, throwing a puck at the net which defected off a Buccaneer and into the goal to give Tri-City a 1-0 lead.

The Omaha native was at it again in the second, connecting with forward Jake Wahlin on a play in front to get the puck past Des Moines goaltender Ryan Ruck and make it a 2-0 Storm lead.

Des Moines got back into the game late in the second, scoring twice to tie things up at 2-2. Forward Patrick Grasso got the first, while defenseman Corey Schueneman notched a power play goal as the equalizer.

In the shootout, Tri-City got ahead when Wilkie, the team’s first shooter, converted to take a 1-0 lead. Petaccio sealed the win, scoring as the team’s third and final attempt.

Next weekend Tri-City will be tested three more times, playing Lincoln on the road Friday, in Kearney vs. the Stars on Saturday and in Omaha against the Lancers Sunday.

Arenado Homers to help Rockies Sweep Padres, 6-0

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Nolan Arenado homered, Franklin Morales pitched six solid innings for his first win in two months, and the Colorado Rockies beat the San Diego Padres 6-0 on Sunday.

Jackson Williams also went deep for his first major league home run for the Rockies, who swept a three-game series for the first time since June 13-15 in San Francisco.

Colorado has won four straight, its longest streak since winning five in a row against Atlanta and the Giants in June. It was the Rockies’ first three-game sweep at home this season.

San Diego right-hander Tyson Ross entered with 14 consecutive quality starts and came within an out of making it 15. But he allowed a two-out walk to Williams and a pinch-hit single to Matt McBride, ending his day. Alex Torres got the last out of the sixth to keep it a three-run game.
