Chiefs Lose LB Johnson with Leg Injury

It was a rough opening game for the Kansas City Chiefs, who lost Pro Bowl linebacker Derrick Johnson to a torn Achilles tendon.

Johnson went down late in the first half Sunday with nobody around and needed to be carted off the field. Kansas City lost another defensive starter, Mike DeVito, in the second half to the same injury in a loss to Tennessee.

“We’ve got some guys that need to step up and get ready to play,” Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston said. “Guys go down all the time and you need to step up.”

Houston had a scare when Jadeveon Clowney, the top overall pick in this year’s draft, injured his knee and didn’t return in a win over the Redskins.

Coach Bill O’Brien didn’t provide much more information on Clowney’s health after the game.

“They think it’s a good prognosis, so it looks like it’s going to be OK,” O’Brien said. “He may miss some time, he may not. Who knows? So we’ll know better as the week goes on.”

It wasn’t clear how Clowney was injured, but it happened late in the second quarter. He looked to be arguing with the team doctor as the pair walked off the field to the locker room a couple of minutes before halftime.

The Rams already lost one quarterback for the season when Sam Bradford injured his knee in the third preseason game. Shaun Hill left St. Louis’ loss against Minnesota with a left quadriceps injury. St. Louis also lost defensive end Chris Long to a left ankle injury.

Carolina was without starting quarterback Cam Newton, who fractured his ribs in a preseason game last month. He was declared inactive before the Panthers played Tampa Bay.

Cleveland tight end Jordan Cameron aggravated a shoulder injury after catching two passes for 47 yards against Pittsburgh. Washington tight end Jordan Reed strained his hamstring at Houston.

Other injuries included Steelers’ rookie running back Dri Archer, who left the win over the Browns with left knee and ankle injuries.

Chiefs right tackle Jeff Allen left with a strained biceps. Titans linebacker Zach Brown injured his shoulder.

Bills linebacker Keith Rivers injured his groin in a win at Chicago.

Jacksonville lost safety Johnathan Cyprien and linebacker J.T. Thomas to head injuries at Philadelphia. Miami lost starting linebackers Danell Ellerbee (hip) and Koa Misi (ankle) in the first half in a victory over Miami.

Huskers Dominate in 4-0 Triumph Over UND

huskersoccerLincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska soccer team (4-2) scored three goals in the second half to cruise to a 4-0 victory over North Dakota on Sunday afternoon at the Nebraska Soccer Field.

Sophomore forward Jaycie Johnson scored twice in the first three minutes of the second period to increase her season total to six goals. In the 47th minute, Johnson notched her first goal of the day off an assist from Caroline Flynn.

Johnson broke away one minute later and scored from 15 feet out to put NU up 3-0. For the game, Johnson took seven shots, five of which were on goal, in 61 minutes of action.

Senior forward Mayme Conroy added six shots and scored the first goal of the game for Nebraska in the ninth minute. Conroy gathered the ball at midfield and broke away from the UND defense before beating the goalkeeper. The goal marked her second of the season.

In the 76th minute, sophomore Courtney Claassen rebounded Flynn’s shot off the crossbar and scored the first goal of her career as the ball deflected off the defender’s leg into the back of the net.

Goalkeeper Kelly Schatz played the first 48 minutes of the match before freshman Erika Johnson finished the shutout over the final 42 minutes. Johnson earned one save in her first action as a Husker.

Nebraska controlled on offense for the majority of the game, taking 32 shots (15 in the first half and 17 in the second half) compared to North Dakota’s two shots. Fourteen of the Huskers’ shots were on goal.

The Huskers make their season debut on the Big Ten Network on Thursday as they take on Northwestern at the Nebraska Soccer Field at 2:30 p.m. Nebraska completes the two-game home stand on Sunday, Sept. 14 against Illinois at 1 p.m., on the Big Ten Digital Network.

Royals Spoil Jeter’s Day with 2-0 Win over Yankees

kc-royalsNEW YORK (AP) — Yordano Ventura and the Kansas City Royals turned Derek Jeter Day into another disappointing defeat for the New York Yankees’ captain in the dwindling days of his career.

Ventura pitched three-hit ball into the seventh inning, and the AL Central leaders beat the Yankees 2-0 Sunday on a pair of unearned runs for their second shutout in the three-game series.

Kansas City scored due to errors by pitcher Shane Greene (4-3) in the second inning and right fielder Carlos Beltran in the third. The Royals, who won 1-0 Friday night on an unearned run following an error by third baseman Chase Headley, went 4-3 against the Yankees this year to take the season series for the first time since 1999.

Locker leads Titans to 26-10 Win over Chiefs

Kansas City Chiefs LogoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jake Locker threw for 266 yards and two touchdowns, Alex Smith was intercepted three times and the Tennessee Titans rolled to a 26-10 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

Locker picked apart a Chiefs defense that lost linebacker Derrick Johnson and defensive tackle Mike DeVito to Achilles injuries. Locker was 22 of 33 and found eight different players, including former Chiefs wide receiver Dexter McCluster.

Kendall Wright and Delanie Walker had TD catches for the Titans, and Ryan Succop was perfect on four field-goal attempts against the team that released him last weekend.

Smith was 19 of 35 for 202 yards and a touchdown for a Chiefs offense missing suspended wide receiver Dwayne Bowe and right tackle Donald Stephenson.

Huskers Unbeaten but Humbled Heading to Fresno St.

nebraska_helmetLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska players are starting the week concerned about themselves more than they are about Fresno State. They say some self-reflection is in order after Saturday’s close call against McNeese State.

“It was a humbling game for us,” offensive tackle Alex Lewis said. “We have tougher competition coming up. We play like that down the road, I don’t know if we come away with a ‘W.'”

The Cowboys of the second-tier Football Championship Subdivision erased a 10-point deficit and were tied with Nebraska (2-0) in the final minute. The Cornhuskers won 31-24 on Ameer Abdullah’s tackle-busting catch-and-run for a 58-yard touchdown with 20 seconds left.

“It’s a wakeup call that we have a lot to work on,” guard Mike Moudy said. “The sky’s not falling. Nothing’s changed. We’re going to look at this film critically, and guys are going to be critical of themselves and have to look in the mirror and decide if they gave their all or didn’t.”

The Huskers, picked to contend for the Big Ten West title, struggled against an undersized but scrappy McNeese State front seven that blitzed often and was constantly moving before the snap. Nebraska had only two first downs after halftime, going three plays and out on four series and punting after four plays on another.

Take away a 34-yard run by quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. and the 58-yard touchdown by Abdullah, and the Huskers generated only 48 yards in the second half. A penalty nullified a short touchdown run by Armstrong and forced a field goal, and another flag brought back a long pass to Jordan Westerkamp inside the McNeese State 20 and led to a punt.

“A lot of guys went into the cave and shut down,” Moudy said. “You’ve got to understand it’s resilience under negative circumstances that we really, really have to work on. Something goes negative and you have people yelling at you, and you’ve got to take that play and remove it.

“That’s one thing I’ve learned in five years here that you can’t let a bad play carry over into the next one. We have a lot of young guys who need to work on their maturity.”

The Huskers allowed 178 rushing yards, including 74 on 10 carries by quarterback Daniel Sams. They also were bitten by short passes to running backs that turned into long gainers. Defensive coordinator John Papuchis said busted coverages and miscommunication let McNeese State keep moving the ball.

“You can learn from these things and come back and be humbled and work harder or you can be rattled by it,” Papuchis said. “It’s our job to make sure they’re not rattled by it.”

Abdullah and cornerback Josh Mitchell, both captains, said they sensed complacency setting in at practice last week after the Huskers rolled up 784 yards in a 48-point win over Florida Atlantic.

“Football is a game that I love, a game I have a lot of respect for, but the respect as a whole across the board for this team needs to go up, as does preparation, as does respect of the opponent,” Abdullah said.

The Huskers head west this week to play a Fresno State team that has given up 52 and 59 points in losses to Southern California and Utah.

Coach Bo Pelini said defensive end Randy Gregory (left knee) should play after missing the McNeese State game. The receivers are hurting, though. Kenny Bell pulled a groin in the first quarter and is day-to-day, and Jamal Turner tore his Achilles’ tendon in the second quarter and is out. Sam Burtch and Brandon Reilly already were out because of injuries.

Horrible Saturday Night Levels Big Ten’s Bullies

Big-Ten-LogoCOLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — It’s barely September and the Big Ten might be out of the inaugural College Football Playoff race.

A conference that has had more than its share of epic failures in high-profile showdowns in recent years had a massive breakdown on Saturday night. Three of its biggest bullies — No. 7 Michigan State, No. 8 Ohio State and once mighty Michigan— all were soundly defeated at about the same time on national TV.

Factor in Wisconsin’s loss to LSU a week earlier and it’s easy to see why the conference could be a spectator for the next four months when the talk turns to the best teams at the college level.

It wasn’t the worst day in Big Ten football history. But it was close.

Oregon Skips to No. 2, VT Leaps into AP Top 25 as Nebraska Drops Out

fox-footballAfter impressive performances in two of the young season’s most attractive nonconference showdowns, Oregon jumps to No. 2 in The Associated Press college football poll behind No. 1 Florida State — and ahead of No. 3 Alabama — and Virginia Tech vaults into the rankings at No. 17.

The Ducks pulled away late from Michigan State on Saturday at Autzen Stadium in Eugene to beat the Spartans 46-27. Oregon receives 16 first-place votes from the media panel.

Florida State has 38 first-place votes.

Alabama slipped one spot. No. 4 Oklahoma receives two first-place votes. No. 5 Auburn, No. 6 Georgia and No. 7 Texas A&M give the Southeastern Conference four of the top seven.

Michigan State slipped six spots to 13th.

Big Ten rival Ohio State dropped to 22nd after losing 35-21 at home to Virginia Tech, which is ranked for the first time since the middle of last season.

Stubbs’ RBI Single lifts Rockies past Padres

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Drew Stubbs had a tiebreaking RBI single in the 12th inning to lift the Colorado Rockies past the San Diego Padres, 7-6, on Saturday night.

D.J. LeMahieu doubled off Jesse Hahn (7-4) to start the 12th and Charlie Culberson sacrificed him to third. Hahn then intentionally walked Charlie Blackmon and San Diego manager Bud Black aligned three defenders between third and second base in hopes of cutting off any grounder and getting the runner at the plate.

But Stubbs singled sharply down the third base line and into left field, allowing LeMahieu to score the winning run and send the Padres to their fourth loss in a row.

Nick Masset (2-0) picked up the victory with an inning of scoreless relief.

Finnegan 1st from 2014 Draft to Reach Majors

Brandon Finnegan Kansas City RoyalsNEW YORK (AP) — As if reaching the major leagues wasn’t enough, Brandon Finnegan struck out Derek Jeter in his very first inning.

The 21-year-old left-hander became the first player from the 2014 amateur draft to make his big league debut, pitching two perfect innings Saturday in the Kansas City Royals’ 6-2 loss to the New York Yankees.

Selected in the first round from Texas Christian with the 17th pick overall, Finnegan signed for a bonus of $2,200,600.

He relieved with Kansas City trailing 6-1 and retired John Ryan Murphy on a flyout to center with his first pitch, a 92 mph fastball. Finnegan struck out Jacoby Ellsbury on a changeup and Jeter on a 94 mph fastball.

Finnegan was 2 years old when Jeter made his major league debut in 1995.

McCarthy, Yankees Rebound in 6-2 Win over Royals

kc-royalsNEW YORK (AP) — Brandon McCarthy won for the second time in six starts, and the New York Yankees feasted on Kansas City’s bullpen in a 6-2 win Saturday after Royals starter Danny Duffy left because of an injury after just one pitch.

A night after a 1-0 loss in the series opener dropped them 4½ games back for the AL’s second wild card, the weak-hitting Yankees scored as many as six runs for the first time since Aug. 29.

McCarthy (6-4) allowed two runs and six hits in 6 2-3 innings with four strikeouts and a walk. He was 3-10 with a 5.01 ERA in 18 starts before the Yankees acquired from Arizona on July 6.

Shawn Kelley, Dellin Betances and David Robertson combined for hitless relief. New York relievers have thrown 11 innings of scoreless, three-hit relief in their last four games with 14 strikeouts and no walks.
