Chiefs Sign Coleman, Place Mays on Injured Reserve
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs signed veteran safety Kurt Coleman on Tuesday and placed linebacker Joe Mays on injured reserve with a designation to return.
Coleman made 29 starts and appeared in 59 games over four seasons in Philadelphia, three of those under current Chiefs coach Andy Reid. He was released by the Vikings during the final round of cuts on Saturday after spending the offseason and training camp with them.
Mays had surgery to repair damage in his wrist that he sustained during a preseason game. The veteran linebacker, who has played in 61 games over the course of six seasons, was being counted on to start alongside Derrick Johnson in the middle of the Chiefs’ defense.
Kansas City opens the regular season Sunday against Tennessee.
Seahawks Stay Atop AP Pro32 Power Rankings
The Seattle Seahawks are still on top.
After finishing training camp with no major setbacks, the defending Super Bowl champions stayed in first place in the latest power rankings from the Associated Press. The Denver Broncos had one vote from the 12-person panel in the Pro32 poll released Tuesday.
The Seahawks will have their status tested right away, with the NFL opener Thursday against Green Bay. The Packers were fourth, one spot behind the New England Patriots.
San Francisco saw the most notable slip, from one first-place vote in the preseason poll six weeks ago to sixth. The 49ers offense was sluggish in exhibition action, and a nine-game suspension of star outside linebacker Aldon Smith became official.
Royals Recall 4 to Help Depth in Stretch Run
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals have recalled infielder Christian Colon, outfielder Terrance Gore and pitchers Aaron Crow and Liam Hendriks from Double-A Northwest Arkansas for their playoff push.
Colon was in the starting lineup at third base for Tuesday night’s game against Texas.
Gore gives the Royals a speedy threat on the base paths. He opened the season at Class-A Wilmington and climbed to Triple-A Omaha before spending time in Arkansas prior to his arrival.
Colon can play several infield positions, while Crow is a former All-Star reliever. Hendriks was impressive in a spot start last week, but will be used out of the bullpen down the stretch.
Big Week for the Big Ten
It’s a marquee week for the Big Ten.
Michigan State visits Oregon, Michigan goes to Notre Dame and Ohio State hosts Virginia Tech. The three high-profile matchups give the conference a good chance to make a statement early in the season, which may be more important than ever with the new playoff format.
A 13-person committee will select the final four teams who get a chance to play for the national championship at the end of this season. So getting quality wins before a conference season that is perceived to be not as competitive as those in the SEC, Big 12 and Pac 12 will be crucial.
Ohio State coach Urban Meyer says he is rooting for all the Big Ten teams this weekend.

Royals Stop Slide with 4-3 Victory over Rangers
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Salvador Perez homered and drove in three runs, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Texas Rangers 4-3 on Monday night to snap a three-game losing streak.
Perez, who had three hits, went deep in the third with Alex Gordon aboard. His two-out double in the first scored Gordon, who had singled and swiped second.
Yordano Ventura allowed three runs, two earned, and five hits in 6 1-3 innings for Kansas City. The right-hander, who was skipped on his previous turn in the rotation due to a sore back, struck out seven and walked four.
Greg Holland pitched the ninth for his 41st save in 43 chances.
Rockies Win, after Losing End of Suspended Game
DENVER (AP) — Charlie Blackmon lined a two-out single in the ninth inning off reliever Sergio Romo, helping the Colorado Rockies beat San Francisco 10-9 on Monday and stop the Giants’ six-game win streak on a long day at Coors Field.
Earlier in the day, the Giants broke away from a tie and beat Colorado 4-2 in a game that resumed after it was suspended May 22 in the sixth inning because of rain.
In the regularly scheduled game, Rockies reliever LaTroy Hawkins (3-2) blew a save in the top of the ninth. In the bottom half, Mike McKenry led off with a single up the middle off Romo (5-4). McKenry easily scored from second when Blackmon’s hit fell near the right-field line.
Hunter Pence hit a three-run homer for the Giants. Pence also came up big hours earlier, when his tiebreaking double in the eighth led the Giants in the resumption.
Armed with New Deal, Chiefs’ Smith Looks Forward

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Alex Smith didn’t have much choice when he was traded from San Francisco to Kansas City last year.
He had the final say when it came to staying with the Chiefs, though.
One day after signing a four-year extension that should solidify his future through the 2018 season, Smith expressed relief at being able to focus solely on football — rather than negotiations that had been going on for months, and that were threatening to bleed into the regular season.
Smith said he made it clear to his agent, Tom Condon, he wanted an agreement done before the start of the season. Chiefs general manager John Dorsey said that was also his goal.
The Chiefs open the regular season against Tennessee on Sunday.
