Royals Activate Hosmer Amid Series of Moves

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — First baseman Eric Hosmer was activated from the disabled list and first-round draft pick Brandon Finnegan was promoted from Double-A Northwest Arkansas in a flurry of roster moves by the Royals on Monday.
Hosmer, who had been out with a fractured right hand, was 3 for 10 in two rehab games for Triple-A Omaha. Designated hitter Billy Butler had started in his place.
Finnegan had a 1.33 ERA in three minor league appearances.
The Royals also purchased the contract of outfielder Carlos Peguero from Omaha and recalled left-hander Casey Coleman, infielder Johnny Giavotella, outfielder Lane Adams and catcher Francisco Pena from minor league affiliates.
In corresponding moves, left-hander Chris Dwyer and right-hander Blake Wood were designated for assignment.
The Royals open a series against Texas on Monday night.
Nebraska DE Randy Gregory Doubtful for McNeese St.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska defensive end Randy Gregory is doubtful for this week’s game against McNeese State because of an injury to his left knee.
Gregory left the Florida Atlantic game after the Cornhuskers’ first defensive series Saturday. Coach Bo Pelini said Monday that Gregory had an old basketball injury “flare up,” and it caused a clicking sensation in his knee. Gregory, who led the Big Ten in sacks last season, underwent a procedure Sunday to remove scar tissue.
Pelini said Gregory should return for the Sept. 13 game at Fresno State. The coach said Gregory probably could play against McNeese State, if needed, but that he wanted to give him plenty of time to recover.
Junior Jack Gangwish will make his first career start against McNeese State.
Welker Returns to Practice Following Concussion
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Wes Welker returned to practice Monday for the first time since sustaining a concussion in an Aug. 23 preseason game against the Houston Texans.
The Denver slot receiver ran short routes during the 20-minute viewing period open to the media.
Welker’s concussion was his third in 10 months. He got hurt on a hard hit from D.J. Swearinger that prompted Peyton Manning to swear at the swaggering safety.
That earned the five-time MVP the first taunting penalty of his career along with an $8,268 fine.
Welker caught 73 passes for 778 yards and a career-high 10 TDs last season despite missing the last 3 1-2 games. He also had 18 grabs for 160 yards and a TD in the playoffs.

2014 1st-Round Pick Finnegan Will Get Call-Up
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Pitcher Brandon Finnegan, who was the Kansas City Royals’ first-round pick in the June draft out of TCU, will be among the September call-ups, the club said Sunday.
The previous two Royals players to make their major league debut the same year they were drafted were Bo Jackson in 1986 and Jeff Granger in 1993.
No player drafted this June has played in the majors so far this season.
Finnegan has a 1.33 ERA, allowing four earned runs in 27 innings in 13 appearances with Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Class A Wilmington. He has struck out 26 and walked four.
The Royals also will call up outfielders Terrance Gore, who has 47 stolen bases in 54 attempts with two minor-league clubs, and Lane Adams, who hit .269 with Northwest Arkansas.
Anderson Lifts D-Backs to 6-2 Win over Rockies
PHOENIX (AP) — Chase Anderson pitched six strong innings to help the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Colorado Rockies 6-2 on Sunday.
Anderson (8-6) gave up five hits and one run while matching his career high with eight strikeouts.
Nolan Reimold’s first career pinch-hit homer in the seventh was the decisive hit. His two-run shot highlighted a four-run inning that broke the game open.
Charlie Blackmon led off the fourth with a home run, the only blemish against Anderson — who is 3-0 in three starts against the Rockies in his career.
Aaron Hill tripled, doubled and singled, scoring twice with two runs batted in. Ender Inciarte had two hits, two runs scored and a stolen base in the Diamondbacks’ win.
Hill’s first-inning single knocked in Inciarte after he’d walked, stole second base and took third on a wild pitch. Jordan Pacheco singled in Hill in the third inning after Hill’s two-out triple.
