Broncos Look Primed for Another Big Run

DenverBroncosENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos look like they’re ready to start the season.

They had an impressive preseason debut against the Seattle Seahawks, the team that throttled them in the Super Bowl, and they christened San Francisco’s new stadium with a 34-0 shutout of the 49ers Sunday.

Denver’s starting offense is in midseason form with three scores in four possessions with Peyton Manning completing 22 of 27 passes for 182 yards and a touchdown.

And they haven’t even shown the offense they’ll unveil against Indianapolis on Sept. 7, when starting running back Montee Ball returns from an appendectomy that’s sidelining him the entire preseason.

Denver’s front-line defense has been just as impressive, allowing one TD on four drives.

Chiefs’ Charles Sidelined by Freak Slip Down Hill

Jamaal Charles

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The status of Pro Bowl running back Jamaal Charles remains in question after he missed Sunday night’s preseason game in Carolina because of a bruised foot.

Charles had made it through every training camp practice without picking up any significant bumps or bruises. Then, when he was in the process of moving out of the Missouri Western dorms on Thursday night, he rolled his foot over a curb.

The Chiefs had no media availability on Friday or Saturday, so the injury was not revealed until Sunday, when Charles was not on the trip to Carolina.

Coach Andy Reid said Monday that Charles had X-rays and an MRI exam that revealed no significant injury. Still, it is unclear how long Charles will be out.

Rockies Rally in 8th to Complete DH Sweep of Reds

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Michael Cuddyer hit for the cycle, including a two-run double in Colorado’s five-run eighth inning, and the Rockies rallied again to beat the Cincinnati Reds 10-5 to complete a doubleheader sweep Sunday night.

Drew Stubbs finished off Colorado’s five-run ninth inning with a three-run homer off J.J. Hoover, sending the Rockies to a 10-9 victory in the first game.

Cuddyer, reinstated from the disabled list earlier in the day after missing 60 games with a left shoulder fracture, tripled in the first, homered in the fifth and singled in the seventh to become the seventh Rockies player to hit for the cycle and first since Carlos Gonzalez on July 31, 2010 against the Chicago Cubs.

It was his second career cycle.

Adam Ottavino (1-4) picked up the win in relief and reliever Carlos Contreras (0-1) took the loss.

Newton, Stewart Lead Panthers past Chiefs, 28-16

Kansas City Chiefs LogoCHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Cam Newton made a successful return following ankle surgery, Jonathan Stewart ran for two touchdowns and the Carolina Panthers beat the Kansas City Chiefs 28-16 on Sunday night.

Newton completed 4 of 9 passes for 65 yards and led a pair of touchdown drives in the preseason game before exiting late in the second quarter with Carolina (1-1) up 14-6.

Stewart ran for 26 yards on four carries and made a strong case to be the Panthers’ goal-line back — if not their primary ball carrier — with scoring runs of 3 and 2 yards.

Carolina managed just a yard in on its first three possessions before Stewart provided a spark with a 17-yard run. The Panthers scored touchdowns on their next two possessions.

Alex Smith was 14 of 22 for 127 yards for Kansas City (1-1). Rookie Aaron Murray’s first NFL pass resulted in a 43-yard touchdown strike, but he also had an interception.

Rockies Rally for 10-9 Victory over Reds

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Drew Stubbs capped Colorado’s five-run ninth inning with a three-run homer, sending the Rockies to a 10-9 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday in the first game of a doubleheader.

The Reds carried a 9-5 lead into the ninth, but All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman walked four straight batters before he was replaced by J.J. Hoover. Pinch-hitter Wilin Rosario then hit a sacrifice fly to trim Cincinnati’s lead to two.

After Charlie Blackmon flied out, Stubbs drove a 1-0 pitch from Hoover (1-9) into the seats in left for his 12th homer. It was Stubbs’ third career game-ending homer and first with the Rockies.

Rex Brothers (4-5) picked up the victory despite allowing a pair of runs in the top of the ninth.

Manning Dominant for Denver in Win over 49ers

DenverBroncosSANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Peyton Manning threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Julius Thomas and dominated in his two series, leading the Denver Broncos past the San Francisco 49ers 34-0 on Sunday to spoil the NFL debut at sparkling $1.2 billion Levi’s Stadium.

The 38-year-old Manning, beginning his 17th season after throwing for an NFL-record 55 touchdowns last year, completed 12 of 14 passes for 102 yards and a 120.8 rating. He was 8 for 8 on Denver’s second drive, then backup Brock Osweiler took over and threw for a score and led another touchdown drive in a preseason matchup of the past two Super Bowl losers.

Colin Kaepernick went 5 for 9 for 39 yards in his two series before a sellout crowd at the team’s flashy new digs in the heart of Silicon Valley. Major League Soccer’s San Jose Earthquakes beat the Seattle Sounders in the stadium’s first sporting event Aug. 1.

Royals Score 7 in 2nd, Beat Twins 12-6

kc-royalsMINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Alex Gordon, Salvador Perez and Josh Willingham homered, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Minnesota Twins 12-6 on Sunday for their 20th win in their last 25 games.

Kansas City sent 11 batters to the plate and scored seven times in the second, keyed by two-run singles for Alcides Escobar and Nori Aoki. The Royals also increased their AL Central lead to 1 1/2 games over Detroit, which lost 8-1 to Seattle.

This is the latest the Royals have been in first place since 2003.

Kansas City’s Jeremy Guthrie (9-10) returned to the mound after a 54-minute rain delay in the fourth and lasted seven innings, yielding home runs to Joe Mauer and Kennys Vargas.

Rockies Activate Cuddyer; Kahnle goes on DL

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Outfielder Michael Cuddyer, sidelined for 2 1/2 months by a fractured left shoulder, has been activated by the Colorado Rockies. He returns to the lineup for the first game of a doubleheader against the Cincinnati Reds.

In other moves Sunday, the Rockies placed reliever Tommy Kahnle on the 15-day disabled list because of a right shoulder inflammation and recalled right-handed reliever Brooks Brown from their Triple-A affiliate in Colorado Springs.

Infielder Ben Paulsen also was optioned to Colorado Springs and left-handed pitcher Brett Anderson (back strain) was transferred from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL. Brown also was available for Sunday’s games.

The 35-year-old Cuddyer was playing third base against Arizona on June 5 when he hurt himself diving for a grounder. He missed the next 60 games. In 31 games this season, Cuddyer batted .317 with five home runs and 16 RBIs.

AP Poll: Defending Champion Florida State is No. 1, Nebraska 22nd

NCAA-Football-CollegeJameis Winston and defending national champion Florida State are No. 1 in The Associated Press preseason college football poll.

The Seminoles will start the season No. 1 for the sixth time — the first since 1999 when they became the first team to hold the top spot for the entire season.

Florida State received 57 of 60 first-place votes Sunday from the media panel. No. 2 Alabama, No. 3 Oregon and No. 4 Oklahoma each received one first-place vote. Ohio State is No. 5 and Auburn is No. 6.

Winston, the Heisman Trophy winner last season as a redshirt freshman, led Florida State to a 34-31 victory against Auburn in the last BCS national championship game.

This season the Bowl Championship Series is being replaced by the College Football Playoff. A selection committee will pick the top four teams in the country for two national semifinals.
