Rose Hears Cheers as US Beats Brazil 95-78

USA-BasketballCHICAGO (AP) — Derrick Rose heard the cheers and showed some of his old explosiveness, fellow Chicago product Anthony Davis scored 20 points, and the U.S. beat Brazil 95-78 in a tuneup for the World Cup of Basketball on Saturday night.

With fans roaring for Rose all night, the Chicago Bulls point guard flashed some of his MVP moves. He also seemed happy to defer to his teammates in his first appearance at the United Center since his latest season-ending knee injury, finishing with seven points.

Davis, who like Rose grew up on Chicago’s South Side, dominated down the stretch, and the U.S. pulled away after Brazil kept it close for three quarters.

With a five-point lead going into the fourth, the U.S. went on a 14-2 run to break open a 68-63 game.

Hughes goes 7, Suzuki Homers, Twins top Royals 4-1

kc-royalsMINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Phil Hughes threw seven sharp innings, Kurt Suzuki hit his third homer of the season and the Minnesota Twins beat first-place Kansas City 4-1 on Saturday night to snap the Royals’ three-game winning streak.

Hughes (13-8) allowed one run, seven hits and struck out six to outlast hard-throwing rookie Yordano Ventura (9-9), who threw six innings of one-hit ball before the Twins broke through in the seventh.

With runners on second and third, Ventura threw a 99-mph fastball that shattered Danny Santana’s bat — but Santana reached base when Billy Butler tried to throw out Suzuki at home. Catcher Salvador Perez’s tag was late, allowing the Twins to tie it.

Brian Dozier followed with his 25th double of the season to score pinch-runner Eduardo Escobar and put the Twins ahead for good.

Reds-Rockies Game Postponed by Water Main Break

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Saturday night’s game between the Colorado Rockies and Cincinnati Reds has been postponed because of a water main break outside of Coors Field.

It will be made up as part of a split doubleheader on Sunday. The first game will start at 4:10 p.m. ET and the second at 9:10 p.m.

The Rockies originally said the game would be delayed 30 minutes as city officials were on their way to fix the issue. There were pools of water visible on the street and sidewalk near Blake Street, which is right outside the gate of the park.

Restrooms inside Coors Field were not working and there were only limited concessions.

Yellow tape was put up to keep fans away from the street and police officers patrolled the area.

Huskers Wrap Up Week Two of Camp

nebraska_helmetLincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska football team finished up its second full week of Fall Camp Saturday with a two-hour practice at the Ed and Joyanne Gass practice fields outside of the Hawks Championship Center.

Nebraska Head Coach Bo Pelini met with the media following practice, mentioning that the team had a pretty solid second week of Fall Camp, but would like to continue to see progression in depth on the defensive side of the ball.

“We just finished up what I thought was a pretty good week,” Pelini said. “I think we are in a situation now, more on defense than offense that I think there is a bit of too much separation in a couple positions between the 1’s and the 2’s.”

To Pelini, the upperclassmen and starting group on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball have been impressing him with their competition.

“I feel good about where our upperclassmen or 1’s are now, the 2’s are still coming and there is still good competition on the offensive side of the football,” Pelini said. “I think we are right where we want to be—we have to keep plugging along.”

Nebraska, which in recent years has become Kicker U, will look to continue to plug in the next great Husker kicker. Up to this point in camp though, there has not been much separation between junior Mauro Bondi and true freshman Drew Brown.

“When we start game week I will have a feel and we will name how we are going to do it. It is really close right now, they have both hit the ball pretty good, consistently and pretty solid.”

Returning sophomore quarterback Tommy Armstrong had an improved second week of camp according to Pelini, even if the Blackshirt defense has been throwing a lot at the young QB.

“Tommy had a good week, a very good week. Defensively we have installed a lot so we have been throwing a lot at him,” he said. “I think he has progressed, is he exactly where we want him to be at? No. He plays the quarterback position which is difficult, but he has seen a lot of looks and I think he is managing the offense really well.”

According to Pelini, last year if Armstrong would make a mistake out on the field, it would take him longer to bounce back from the mistake. This season though, Husker fans can expect a much more mature and refined Armstrong at quarterback.

“When he makes a mistake, he comes back from that mistake very strong, with a lot of confidence,” he said. “To me that is important to have at the quarterback position, he is showing a lot of maturity, I like where he right now but he has to keep going.”

Heading into the third week of Fall Camp, the Huskers will have a lot of good competition between the starting offensive and defense, before going into game week for the Aug. 30 season opening matchup against Florida Atlantic.

“We will go good-on-good (first team vs. first team) for the next couple of days to start the third week. Then we will start getting in game preparation towards the end of the week.”

The Huskers will be back on the practice fields Monday to continue the 2014 Fall Camp. Check back here or at Huskers.com for a practice report.

Cueto, Negron Lift Reds to 3-2 Win over Rockies

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Johnny Cueto threw eight stellar innings to become the first 15-game winner in the majors and Kris Negron had a career-high four hits, including a tiebreaking single in the ninth, as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Colorado Rockies 3-2 on Friday night.

Cueto (15-6) allowed two runs and six hits to help the Reds snap a three-game skid. He’s now 7-0 since a loss at San Diego on July 2.

Negron lined a two-out single up the middle off Adam Ottavino (0-4) to bring in Ramon Santiago with the go-ahead run.

Aroldis Chapman closed for his 26th save in 28 chances. Charlie Culberson drew a one-out walk and pinch-hitter Mike McKenry sent a shot down the line that first baseman Brayan Pena snared as he toppled over. Pena then touched first base with his glove to double up Culberson.

Nolan Arenado homered for Colorado, which has dropped seven of nine.

Willingham’s 3 RBIs vs His Former Team Lead Royals

kc-royalsMINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Josh Willingham returned to Target Field and hit a bases-clearing double in Kansas City’s five-run fourth inning, and the surging Royals hung on to beat the Minnesota Twins 6-5 on Friday night.

Danny Dufy (8-10) allowed three runs in 5 1-3 innings to win his third straight start. Kansas City has won 11 of 12 and sits atop the AL Central.

Oswaldo Arcia hit an RBI double in the ninth and pinch-hitter Chris Parmelee drove him in with a groundout to cut the Royals’ lead to 6-5. But Greg Holland struck out Danny Santana for his 37th save in 39 chances.

After Minnesota took a 2-0 lead in the third, the first six Royals hitters reached base to start the fourth off Ricky Nolasco (5-8).

Cockrell Impressing Papuchis at Nickel

nebraska_helmetLincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska football team continued its second full week of Fall Camp Friday evening with a 90-minute practice at the Ed and Joyanne Gass practice fields outside of the Hawks Championship Center.

Nebraska defensive coordinator John Papuchis met with the media after practice, noting that the team has had a good week of practice, mentioning that the tempo has been improving since the start of Fall Camp.

“I think it has been a pretty good week,” Papuchis said. “I thought as practice went on our tempo got better—we finished well and yeah, there has been some good and bad but that is every practice.”

Junior newcomer Byerson Cockrell of Columbus, Miss., has continued to impress the Husker coaching staff at nickel back. With fellow junior Charles Jackson out for the season with a knee injury, Cockrell has taken a huge step in filling the void Jackson leaves with his absence.

“(We are) Feeling really good about Byerson, he did a lot during the spring,” Papuchis said. “We came out of spring thinking he could be a nickel for us, but Charles was playing well so we didn’t want him sitting behind anyone.”

True freshman Josh Kalu has also been seeing a lot of action at nickel, and according to Papuchis, is really becoming a fast learner.

“Kalu is a quick learner, he is coming fast, he works hard and he asks good questions,” he said. “I don’t have many doubts that he will be ready to roll.”

Kalu is not the only freshman that has been impressing Papuchis, according to him the whole newcomer group on defense has been making some improvements these past two weeks.

“I think with all the freshmen they are up and down. There is so much that has to be installed and so much teaching, they will have a couple days that are really good and then take a couple steps back,” Papuchis said. “This next week is about polishing up—making sure we get the details down, and then I think we will be ready to roll.”

The Huskers will be back on the practice fields Saturday morning to wrap up the second week of preseason practice. Check back here or at Huskers.com for a practice report and video coverage following practice immediately.

Johnson’s Hat Trick Leads NU in Exhibition Victory

huskersoccerColorado Springs, Colo. – Sophomore forward Jaycie Johnson scored three goals to help No. 13 Nebraska to a 5-3 exhibition win over Colorado College at Stewart Field on Friday afternoon.

Johnson’s first goal came in the 15th minute as she slid past the Tigers’ goalkeeper on the left side and put the ball in the back of an open net. Colorado College responded with two goals over the next 15 minutes to take a 2-1 advantage over the Huskers.

In the 34th minute, sophomore midfielder Caroline Flynn knotted the score 2-2 with a shot from 20 yards out that soared above the goalkeeper’s head into the top right corner of the net.

Shortly after halftime, the Tigers reclaimed the lead with Rachel Herron’s goal off the crossbar in the 47th minute. Trailing 3-2, the Huskers scored three unanswered goals over the final 34 minutes to put away the victory.

Johnson, a Lake Winnebago, Mo., native, scored her second goal in the 57th minute with a crossing shot from 12 yards out on the left side off an assist from Haley Hanson. She added her third goal of the afternoon in the 81st minute off a Samantha Areman assist to give Nebraska a 4-3 lead.

Junior forward Katie Kraeutner added Nebraska’s final goal with less than two minutes remaining on a direct kick from 20 yards out. The Huskers outshot Colorado College for the game, 15-8, while taking two more shots on goal, 8-6.

Sophomore Kelly Schatz earned the start at goalie and picked up three saves over 90 minutes.
