NCAA President to Take Stand in O’Bannon Trial

NCAA-Logo-College-SportsOAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — NCAA President Mark Emmert will take the stand to defend his organization in a landmark antitrust case that could one day lead to players getting paid a portion of the billions of dollars in television money flowing into big-time college athletics.

Emmert is scheduled to testify Thursday in a much anticipated appearance as the NCAA tries to convince a federal judge that its system of so-called “amateurism” is not anti-competitive and is the best model for regulating college sports.

Plaintiffs led by former UCLA basketball star Ed O’Bannon are seeking an injunction that would allow players to band together and sell the rights to their names and likenesses in broadcasts. They envision a system in which players can get money when they leave college for their play.

Kershaw Throws No-Hitter, Dodgers Rout Rockies 8-0

colorado-rockiesLOS ANGELES (AP) — Clayton Kershaw pitched his first no-hitter Wednesday night, striking out a career-high 15 and allowing his only baserunner on a throwing error by shortstop Hanley Ramirez in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 8-0 victory over the Colorado Rockies.

Kershaw’s gem gave the Dodgers the only two no-hitters in the majors this season. Josh Beckett tossed one May 25 in Philadelphia.

Kershaw (7-2) retired his first 18 batters before Corey Dickerson led off the seventh with a slow bouncer to Ramirez, whose throw on the run went wide past first baseman Adrian Gonzalez for a two-base error — ending any chance for a perfect game.

That was the only runner allowed by Kershaw, a two-time NL Cy Young Award winner.

College World Series Day 5 Recap

NCAA-CWSOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — C.J. Hinojosa broke the College World Series’ long home run drought in the seventh inning, Chad Hollingsworth and Travis Duke limited UC Irvine to four hits, and Texas beat the Anteaters 1-0 in an elimination game Wednesday night.

Hinojosa became the first player to homer at the CWS in 115 innings, since Mississippi State’s Hunter Renfroe did it against Oregon State on June 21, 2013. It was Hinojosa’s second homer of the season.

The Longhorns (45-20) advance to meet Vanderbilt on Friday. They would need to beat the Commodores (48-19) twice to reach next week’s best-of-three finals.

UC Irvine (41-25) went 1-2 in its surprise CWS appearance that came about after it upset No. 1 national seed Oregon State as a No. 3 regional seed and swept Oklahoma State on the road in super regionals.

Guthrie, Royals Win 10th Straight, Edge Tigers 2-1

kc-royalsDETROIT (AP) — The Kansas City Royals won their 10th straight game, extending the team’s best streak in 20 years when Jeremy Guthrie pitched impressively into the seventh inning to beat the Detroit Tigers 2-1 Wednesday.

The AL Central-leading Royals have not won this many games in a row since a run of 14 in a row in 1994. They extended their division lead over the Tigers to 1 1/2 games.

Guthrie (4-6) allowed four hits and a walk while striking out nine. Drew Smyly (3-6) nearly matched him, but the Detroit left-hander was victimized by Alex Gordon’s RBI single in the first and a solo homer by Omar Infante in the fifth.

J.D. Martinez homered for the Tigers in the seventh, but the Kansas City bullpen got the last seven outs, with Greg Holland pitching the ninth for his 21st save in 22 chances.

Husker Wrestling Adds Arthur for Upcoming Season

UNLThe Nebraska wrestling team announced the addition of 149-pounder Justin Arthur for the 2014-15 season on Wednesday.

“We’re very excited about Justin Arthur joining us,” Head Coach Mark Manning said. “Justin possesses the qualities we look for and demand from our student-athletes, and he was highly sought after the last couple weeks by some of the top teams in college wrestling. Justin competed as a true freshman and had a tremendous year. He expressed to us the need to become a national champion as well as being part of a program that can challenge for championships. We feel he is another piece to the puzzle that allows our program to move forward toward our goals.”

Arthur spent his first year of college wrestling at Clarion, where he compiled a 29-16 record at 149 pounds and narrowly missed the All-America podium at the 2014 NCAA Championships. After dropping his opening match at the national tournament, Arthur reeled off three consecutive wins in the consolation bracket before falling to fourth-seeded Kendric Maple of Oklahoma by a 7-4 decision. Arthur, a Huntington, W.V., native, earned a pin and major decision during his winning streak at the NCAA Championships.

Before Clarion, Arthur completed his high school career at Huntington under Coach Robbie Archer as a three-time West Virginia state champion with a career record of 142-15. As a senior, he was named West Virginia’s Most Valuable Wrestler when he went 30-2 and collected a state title at 145 pounds. Arthur added state crowns as a junior in 2012 at 138 pounds when he went 40-2, and in 2010, when he earned a 39-3 record at 119 pounds. In 2011, he finished third at 130 pounds with a season record of 33-8.

In addition, Arthur was the NHSCA Senior Nationals runner-up and a two-time Fargo All-American.

Four Huskers Sign MLB Contracts

husker baseballLincoln – Since being drafted in the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft, three members of the 2014 Nebraska baseball team have signed professional contracts. Senior Zach Hirsch signed with the Milwaukee Brewers, while juniors Pat Kelly (Minnesota Twins) and Aaron Bummer (Chicago White Sox) each decided to forego their senior seasons and sign with their respective teams. Michael Pritchard was the fourth player from the 2014 squad to sign a contract, as he was picked up by the St. Louis Cardinals after not being drafted and signed with the Cardinals on Wednesday morning.

2014 marks the second time in Darin Erstad’s three-year tenure as head coach that the Huskers have lost a pair of juniors to the draft. Following the 2012 season, both Travis Huber and Richard Stock passed on their senior seasons.

“We are very excited for Zach, Michael, Pat and Aaron, to purse their dreams of being a Major League Baseball player,” Erstad said. “I can’t thank each of them enough for helping put Nebraska baseball back on the map and for helping cement our culture at Nebraska for years to come.”

Kelly was the first member of the 2014 team to get picked in the draft, going in the 12th round to the Twins. He was a three-time All-Big Ten performer and two-time first-team selection during his three seasons at Nebraska.

Kelly led the Huskers in hits each of the past two seasons and ended his career ranked 20th in school history with 212 career hits. Defensively, Kelly posted a .990 fielding percentage in 2014, as he committed just three errors, and he leaves Nebraska ranked seventh in school history with 468 assists.

Selected in the 19th round by the White Sox, Bummer worked as a reliever during his freshman season in 2012 and started in the bullpen as a sophomore before joining NU’s weekend rotation during Big Ten play in 2013. The 6-2 lefty worked exclusively as a starter in 2014, throwing 89.0 innings over 15 starts. He led the Huskers in 2014 in strikeouts with 56, including a team-best 16 strikeouts looking.

During his three years in Lincoln, Bummer posted an 11-6 record with a 3.06 ERA. He also tossed his first career complete game during the 2014 season, as he capped a series sweep of Ohio State at Hawks Field. The 2014 Draft marked the second time Bummer has been selected, as he was a 31st-round pick by the New York Yankees in 2011 out of high school, but instead chose to come to Nebraska.

After working as a starter during his sophomore season in 2012, Hirsch made the move to the bullpen in 2013 and was one of the top relief arms in the country in 2014. A third-team All-Big Ten selection in 2014, Hirsch was also one of 50 relievers nationally to be named to the Midseason Stopper-of-the-Year List. For his work in 2014, Hirsch was picked in the 19th round by Milwaukee.

Hirsch led the Huskers with a 1.72 ERA in 2014 and held opposing batters to a .193 average. The 6-4 lefty’s ERA is the second-lowest single-season ERA in school history, topped only by Bill McGuire’s 1.29 ERA in 1984. Hirsch’s 31 appearances in 2014 were the most by a Husker since Brett Jensen made 33 appearances in 2005.

A three-time All-Big Ten performer and 2012 All-American, Pritchard ended his four-year Husker career ranked fifth in school history with 251 career hits. A career .339 hitter, Pritchard’s 45 career doubles are tied for 10th in NU history.

A native of Omaha, Pritchard was selected to the 2014 NCAA Stillwater Regional All-Tournament team and was a first-team All-Big Ten pick for the second time in his career in 2014 after being a first-team selection in 2012. Pritchard earned second-team honors in 2013.

One of the most prolific hitters in Husker history, Pritchard strung together a 25-game hitting streak in 2012 to tie for the third-longest streak in school history. He added a 20-game hitting streak in 2013 to become the first player in school history with a pair of 20+ game hitting streaks. He also put together a 57-game on base streak that spanned the final 42 games of the 2013 season to the first 15 games of the 2014 season.

The Big Ten set a conference record with an average attendance of 13,534 per game, including regular season home games and all six sessions of the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament.

During the 2013-14 campaign, the Big Ten welcomed 2,896,322 patrons, the 22nd straight year the conference eclipsed the two-million mark. In addition, the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament welcomed 111,427 fans over six sessions at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, an average of 18,571 fans per session and the largest total attendance in Indianapolis. For regular season and postseason home games only, the conference saw an increase in average attendance for the fifth consecutive year with 13,389 patrons per contest, the highest average since at least the 1999-2000 season. The Big Ten’s average attendance ranks third since at least 1971-72, trailing only the 1989-90 (13,455) and 1999-2000 (13,443) campaigns. In addition, for the first time since 2000-01 and 2001-02, the Big Ten drew an average of at least 13,000 fans per home game in back-to-back seasons. During Big Ten play, the conference eclipsed 1.5 million fans (1,513,266) for the first time in conference history, and averaged more than 14,000 fans per conference home game (14,012) for just the third time since at least the 1962-63 season.

Ramirez Homers, gets Injured in Dodgers’ 4-2 Win over Rockies

colorado-rockiesLOS ANGELES (AP) — Hanley Ramirez homered before leaving with a hand injury, and Zack Greinke pitched the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 4-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night.

Matt Kemp also went deep and Carlos Triunfel hit his first major league home run after replacing Ramirez. Greinke (9-3) threw a season-high 117 pitches over six innings, allowing a run and three hits with five strikeouts and two walks.

The right-hander tied St. Louis’ Adam Wainwright and Cincinnati’s Alfredo Simon for the NL lead in wins.

Ramirez, a three-time All-Star shortstop and the 2009 NL batting champion, left in the seventh with a bruised ring finger on his right hand after Corey Dickerson’s hard grounder to him deflected into short center field for an RBI double that trimmed the Dodgers’ lead to 3-2.
