College World Series Day 4 Recap

NCAA-CWSOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Pinch hitter John Gatlin’s single into short right field over a pulled-in, five-man infield in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Mississippi a 2-1 victory over Texas Tech in a College World Series elimination game Tuesday.

The exciting finish came after Texas Tech had tied it in the top of the ninth.

Ole Miss (47-20) plays TCU or Virginia Thursday. The Red Raiders (45-20) went 0-2 in their first CWS.

Ole Miss won after Colby Bortles walked with one out. Brantley Bell hit a comebacker to Cameron Smith, who tried to force out Bortles at second. But he threw high into center field, allowing Bortles to go to third.

Dominic Moreno came on to face Gatlin, with Texas Tech shifting an extra player to the left side of the infield and going with only two outfielders. Gatlin punched a 1-2 pitch over second base, and the celebration was on.

In the night cap Daniel Pinero’s sacrifice fly scored Thomas Woodruff in the bottom of the 15th inning to give Virginia a 3-2 victory Tuesday night in a game that matched the longest in the College World Series’ 66-year history.

Pinero fouled off two squeeze-bunt attempts against Trey Teakell before he lofted a fly to center. Cody Jones’ throw toward home never had a chance. The Cavaliers’ bench and bullpen emptied, with everybody mobbing Pinero near second base.

Virginia (51-14), which had a walk-off win against Mississippi on Sunday in nine innings, plays Friday in its bracket final. TCU (48-17) plays Ole Miss in an elimination game Thursday.

Artie Lewicki (8-1) got the win and Teakell (6-1) took the loss.

It was the longest game, as measured by innings, since Southern California beat Florida State 2-1 in 15 in the 1970 national championship game.

First Nationals Sweep Scottsbluff, Run Winning Streak to Seven Games

first-nationalsThe North Platte First Nationals won their sixth and seventh straight games Tuesday night by sweeping Scottsbluff in a doubleheader at Bill Wood Field.

North Platte (17-10) won the first game 12-4 over Scottsbluff despite getting outhit 13-10. Jayden Kruse pitched the complete game for North Platte and earned the win after giving up four runs on 13 hits while striking out eight batters and walking five. Kruse allowed 13 hits but was able to pitch out of jams throughout the game and cause Scottsbluff to leave runners stranded.

The First Nationals took the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning then added four more in the second to go up 5-1. Scottsbluff could never work their way back into it after that and North Platte added two runs in the fourth inning and five runs in the sixth to secure the win. Darian Allberry led the way at the plate by going 2-4 with two doubles and two runs batted in. Jack Kenny added a double in the game to go along with two RBI and Alex Harms led all players with three runs batted in.

The second game of the night at Bill Wood Field almost appeared to be a breeze as North Platte took an early lead and cruised to a 10-1 win. Dalton Pflughaupt pitched a gem for the First Nationals by throwing a complete game two-hitter and giving up just one unearned run. He also struck out three batters and only walked one.

North Platte led 2-0 after the first inning, added three more runs in the fifth then blew the doors off with four runs in the fourth inning before scoring the final run in the sixth inning to earn the win. The First Nationals scored 10 runs on just six hits in the game while Scottsbluff committed five errors and issued eight walks. Harms and Marcos Silos led the way with three RBI each. Harms did it without getting a hit in the game while Silos was 2-3 with a double. Luke Volz also doubled in the game to go along with two RBI and a run scored.

The North Platte First Nationals Seniors and Juniors host the Great Plains Health Junior Senior Tournament this weekend at Bill Wood Field. Royals Win 9th Straight to Take over 1st Place

kc-royalsDETROIT (AP) — Alex Gordon and Mike Moustakas homered as part of a seven-run second inning, and the Kansas City Royals took over first place in the AL Central on Tuesday night with their ninth straight victory, 11-4 over the Detroit Tigers.

Gordon and Moustakas hit two-run shots off Max Scherzer, and Kansas City has won the first two games of this four-game series emphatically. The Royals, who trailed the Tigers by seven games after a May 20 loss, now lead Detroit by a half-game atop the division.

Scherzer (8-3) yielded a career high-tying 10 runs in four-plus innings. The reigning American League Cy Young Award winner allowed the first eight batters of the second inning to reach base, with Kansas City scoring six runs before making an out.

Yordano Ventura (5-5) allowed three runs and eight hits in seven innings.

Dawson County Raceway Results – June 15

Dawson-County-Raceway-ResulRunning like the wind is an understatement when circling the Dawson County Raceway oval in Lexington, Nebraska as the IMCA divisions were joined by the Super Late Model Racing (SLMR) series to put the fans in the stands on the edge of their seats on Sunday evening.

No stranger to victory lane, Kyle Berck of Marquette, Nebraska won his third straight Feature event when the SLMR series visits Lexington’s Dawson County Raceway. Berck cashed in with passing points in the heat race to start on the outside of row one and he darted like a missile to the lead and was working through lap traffic when the lone yellow flew with less than 10 laps remaining. Berke led from the beginning until the checkered flag, with heavy pressure being applied in the waning laps by Justin Zeitner of LaVista, Nebraska who was forced to settle for second place after winning an opening night heat race and drawing the inside row three starting slot. Staying among the leaders throughout the contest with great consistency, Corey Zeitner of Omaha, Nebraska earned a podium finish in third place. Rocketing around the Lexington oval with success, Bill Leighton Jr of Omaha and Hasting hotshoe Justin Gregg finished fourth and fifth in the fast-paced Feature event.

Grabbing the lead on lap six on a very dry-slick oval, Veteran pilot David Murray Jr of Oberlin, Kansas cashed in on the opportunity and was able to hold off all challengers to claim his second straight IMCA Modified Feature at Dawson County Raceway. Earning the hardcharger award for the division was Colton Osborn of Cozad, as he earned runner-up honors after starting in the sixth row at the drop of the green flag. Holding the lead before Murray took the point was Cozad’s Cale Osborn on laps four and five. Osborn continued to battle on the oval with stellar driving to earn third place accolades. Jeremy Herbst of North Platte was the early leader from the onset. Murray and Cale Osborn won the early heat races in the division.

In the shuffle near the front of the field, Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg was able to persevere and then drive away with the Feature victory in the IMCA Northern Sport Mod main event. Kennicutt led the final eight laps of the feature after starting in the fifth row of the feature. Rallying to the front during the waning laps of the feature was Kearney’s Denny Egge. Egge started in the fifth row along side Kennicutt. Jumping the cushion in the second corner could have been costly, but it was veteran Chad Dolan of Gibbon that stayed with his lines and was able to cross the finish line in third place. Dolan and Kennicutt were the heat race victors.

Getting collected in early lap incidents wasn’t enough to halt the progress of Mike Nichols to claim the Feature victory in the IMCA Stock Car division. Nichols of Harlan, Iowa was able to garner the lead by less than a fender on the seventh lap and he continued to pace the field throughout the rest of the main event. The ‘Flyin Farmer’ Kyle Clough of Wallace started in the fifth row and took over the runner-up position where he would finish when Cozad’s Colton Osborn pulled into the pits on a yellow flag after driving from the eleventh row to second place. Clough put heavy pressure on Nichols on the final circuits. The leader during the early stages of the feature was Casey Woken of Ogallala and he was able to earn a podium finish in third place in the feature, his best finish at Dawson County Raceway this year. Winning preliminary heat races in the division were: Casey Werkmeister of Maywood, Bob Chalupa of McCook and Gothenburg’s Jeff Whiting.

Leaving no doubt, Gibbon’s Kyle Bond was high on the wheel to drive away and hide in the front of the field to earn another podium finish in the IMCA Hobby Stock Feature, his first win at DCR in 2014.  Bond tip-toed through the competition until he snared the lead on lap six to drive away and hide after winning the night’s heat race along with Tiffany Bittner. Caleb Hetrick of Grand Island earned a runner-up finish in the feature during his first full-time season at Dawson County Raceway. Rounding out your podium finishers was Campbell’s Dillon Thompson in third place overall.

Gordon has 4 Hits in Dodgers’ 6-1 Win over Rockies

colorado-rockiesLOS ANGELES (AP) — Dee Gordon lined a pitch from Tyler Matzek into the corner in left field that got past Charlie Blackmon, and then it was off to the races.

Gordon circled the bases on the play for the Los Angeles Dodgers’ first run, and they went on to beat Colorado 6-1 on Monday night with a 15-hit barrage and snapped the Rockies’ season-beat five-game winning streak.

Blackmon had trouble picking up the ball twice. First, he stumbled while bending down for it against the lower fence in foul ground and had to chase it back into fair territory — where he missed on his second attempt to grab it. By the time he relayed it back to the infield, it was way too late to get Gordon, who was credited with his major league-leading seventh triple.

“I thought it was an inside-the-park homer, to be honest, because I didn’t think he touched it,” said Gordon, who had four hits. “It just scooted away from him. But it is what it is and I’ll be all right with what I got.”

Matt Kemp singled home a run later that inning and doubled home another run on the sixth. He started in the cleanup spot for the fifth time this season, and the Dodgers have won every time. Regular cleanup hitter Adrian Gonzalez got the night off while Scott Van Slyke played first base.

“I think it’s fun, for us to have a little hit party here and there and enjoy it.,” Kemp said. “We’ve had a tough little stretch, but that happens in baseball. Hopefully we don’t hit one of those again and we stay consistent and keep grinding it out.”

Hyun-Jin Ryu (8-3) allowed a run and three hits in six innings and struck out six in his 13th start. In his first 13 starts last season — his first in the major leagues — the left-hander was 8-5 with a 2.85 ERA. This was the ninth time this year that Ryu has allowed fewer than three earned runs, and he is 7-0 in those games.

“This guy’s pretty impressive in the fact that he’s seen those guys a bunch this year,” catcher A.J. Ellis said. “They battled him really hard tonight. That was probably the hottest team in the National League right now coming in here, but he had command of all of his pitches and used both sides of the plate extremely well — especially to the left-handed hitters. It’s a dangerous team, and he did a great job staying out of the middle of the plate.”

Ellis, Hanley Ramirez and Yasiel Puig had RBI singles. Ryu and four relievers retired 16 of the final 17 Colorado batters after Wilin Rosario’s two-out homer in the fourth.

Gordon, who leads the majors with 36 stolen bases, was thrown out for the sixth time — by Rosario in the first inning. The Rockies’ 22-year-old catcher trimmed the Dodgers’ lead to 2-1 in the fourth with his seventh homer, driving an 0-2 pitch into the pavilion in left field with two outs.

But Ellis got that run back in the fifth with just his second RBI of an injury-plagued season in which the Dodgers’ No. 1 catcher missed 34 games because of knee surgery and sat out another 18 with a sprained right ankle. Ellis’ two singles raised his average from .196 to .222.

“Maybe a lot of that time on the DL has been a blessing for me, to kind of mentally kind of figure out who I am and what my skill set should be as an offensive player,” Ellis said. “While I couldn’t run, I was still able to do a lot of work in the cage these last couple of weeks. I got back to swinging the way I know I’m supposed to swing and being the hitter I’ve been my whole career — a guy who works the count, takes a lot of pitches, uses the middle of the field and tries to be a really tough out.”

Matzek (1-1) allowed three runs and 10 hits through five innings in his second big league start and did not strike out a batter, five days after giving up two runs over seven innings and fanning seven in an 8-2 victory over Atlanta at Coors Field.

“It wasn’t the same. The slider wasn’t there as much and I was falling behind hitters early,” Matzek said. “Ten hits, obviously, is disappointing. I realize that. But I thought I did a pretty good job keeping runs off the board.”

NOTES: A moment of silence was observed for Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn, who died Monday at age 54. Gwynn’s brother Chris and son Tony both played for the Dodgers. “He was just a genius with the bat,” Dodgers Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully said. … Perhaps the biggest of Gwynn’s 140 career hits at Dodger Stadium came on Sept. 28, 1996, when his tiebreaking two-run single in the eighth inning off Mark Guthrie helped clinched a postseason berth for the Padres. … Forget about RHP Chad Billingsley rejoining the Dodgers’ roster before the end of the season. He has a torn flexor tendon in his right elbow, which will require surgery next Tuesday. Billingsley hasn’t pitched in a major league game since April 15, 2013, nine days before he underwent Tommy John surgery. … The Rockies optioned struggling RHP Juan Nicasio to Triple-A Colorado Springs and promoted OF-1B Kyle Parker from the Sky Sox. Parker, selected in the first round of the 2010 draft, made his big league debut in the eighth inning as a pinch-hitter and struck out.

College World Series Day 3 Recap

NCAA-CWSOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Walker Buehler pitched 5 1-3 innings of no-hit relief, and John Norwood drove in the go-ahead run and another for insurance in Vanderbilt’s 6-4 win over UC Irvine at the College World Series on Monday night.

Buehler took over for struggling first-round draft pick Tyler Beede and helped move Vanderbilt within one win of the CWS championship round. The Commodores (48-19) will play in a bracket final Friday against the winner of a Wednesday elimination game between UC Irvine (41-24) and Texas.

Buehler (12-2) retired the first nine batters he faced and finished with seven strikeouts in only his third relief appearance of the year. Only two balls were hit out of the infield against him.

Norwood’s bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the fifth inning put Vanderbilt up 5-4, and his two-strike, two-out single in the seventh made it a two-run game.

Earlier in the day Parker French and Travis Duke limited Louisville to four hits, and Texas manufactured runs in three straight innings to beat the Cardinals 4-1 in a College World Series elimination game Monday.

The Longhorns (44-20) ended a four-game CWS losing streak dating to 2009 and will play Vanderbilt or UC Irvine in another elimination game Wednesday. Louisville (50-17) went 0-2 in the CWS for the second straight year and is 1-6 in three appearances in Omaha.

French (7-5) held the Cardinals to four singles in 7 1-3 innings, and Duke retired their last five batters for his first save.

Louisville sophomore starter Anthony Kidston (9-1) lost for the first time in 15 decisions as a collegian and the Cardinals committed four errors, just as they did in their elimination-game loss to Oregon State last year.
