Royals Beat Tigers 11-8 to Pull Within Half-Game

kc-royalsDETROIT (AP) — Omar Infante hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning and had an RBI single in a four-run fifth against former teammate Justin Verlander, helping the Kansas City Royals beat the Detroit Tigers 11-8 Monday night.

Kansas City has won a season-high eight straight to pull within a half-game of the AL Central-leading Tigers.

Detroit scored six runs in the ninth inning and pulled within three on J.D. Martinez’s two-out grand slam off Donnie Joseph.

Michael Mariot struck out Austin Jackson looking for the final out.

Jason Vargas (7-2) gave up two runs on seven hits and two walks to win his third straight.

Verlander (6-7) allowed seven earned runs in consecutive starts for the first time in his career, giving up a season-high 12 hits and striking out two over six innings.

Dempsey, Brooks give US 2-1 Win over Ghana

US Soccer LogoNATAL, Brazil (AP) — Clint Dempsey scored one of fastest goals in World Cup history and John Brooks scored the game winner on a header in the 86th minute of a 2-1 U.S. victory over Ghana, which had knocked the Americans out of the previous two World Cups.

Dempsey’s goal came on a low shot just 32 seconds into the match. The lead held until Ghana’s Andre Ayew leveled in the 82nd minute. Ayew’s goal appeared to have stolen the victory from the U.S., until Brooks’ goal off a corner from Graham Zusi.

Dempsey’ goal made him the first U.S. player to score in three different World Cups and was the fastest ever scored by an American in the tournament. The US is now tied with Germany atop of Group G.

Carter Coming Back after Two Years on IR

quinton carterENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — As an 85,000-square-foot indoor practice facility rises in the background of the Denver Broncos’ training complex, fourth-year safety Quinton Carter not so quietly goes about resurrecting his NFL career.

The two projects are intertwined.

Carter missed most of the last two seasons after getting hurt inside the team’s rented practice bubble during a rainstorm two summers ago, blowing out a hamstring and a knee while avoiding a soccer goal after defending a deep pass from Peyton Manning to Eric Decker.

After starting 10 games as a rookie in 2011 and intercepting Ben Roethlisberger and Tom Brady in the playoffs, Carter needed microfracture surgery following his injury inside the practice bubble, which doesn’t have regulation size fields like the new facilities will.

Stanley Cup Finals 2014STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) — The Stanley Cup playoffs between Los Angeles and the New York Rangers were the second-most watched NHL postseason since NBC and NBCSN began exclusive coverage in 2006.

Nielsen said Monday the Stanley Cup Final, won in five games by the Kings, was just the fifth final in 20 years to average more than 5.0 million viewers.

The Kings won 3-2 in double overtime on Friday night, averaging 6 million viewers and a 3.7 rating on NBC. The game featured the nation’s two largest media markets.

Spurs Title-Clinching Win a Hit with Viewers

NBA Finals 2014NEW YORK (AP) — The San Antonio Spurs’ redemption title was a big hit with television viewers.

Nearly 18 million viewers tuned in to watch the Spurs clinch in Game 5 on Sunday night. That’s a 10 percent increase from Game 5 between the same teams last year. Nielsen says viewership peaked at 22.4 million in the last half hour of the Spurs’ 104-87 win.

The 10.3 national rating on ABC was up from 9.5 last year.

The five-game series averaged 15.5 million viewers and a 9.3 rating. That’s up from 15.1 million viewers and a 9.1 rating through five games of the 2013 classic series.

Nielsen Social says it was the most-tweeted NBA game of the year, with more than 6.4 million tweets. The Spurs won their fifth NBA championship, preventing the Heat from winning three straight titles.

Wrestling Federation Pins Hopes on Name Change

Fila WrestlingDUBROVNIK, Croatia (AP) — Wrestling’s international governing body could soon be changing its name.

An executive committee for FILA has approved “United World Wrestling” as the organization’s new moniker.

FILA President Nenad Lalovic says the organization’s proposed rebranding is both distinct and “represents the values of wrestling.”

The new name and accompanying logo must be approved by a FILA congress in Uzbekistan in September.
