Lawsuit Against NCAA Takes New Twist on Damages

NCAA-Logo-College-SportsAn antitrust lawsuit against the NCAA took a new twist when former UCLA basketball star Ed O’Bannon and 19 other former athletes gave up their claim to individual monetary damages, just weeks before the case is scheduled to go to trial.

An attorney for the plaintiffs said the move was made so the focus would be on the NCAA in the trial, and not on money sought by the former players. Michael Hausfeld said it simplifies the case by avoiding having a jury try to figure out which players were harmed and whether they should be compensated for that harm.

NCAA lawyers objected.

If the case goes forward without individual damage claims, U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken would issue a trial verdict on the antitrust issues without a jury.

Chiefs Sign Draft Pick Gaines to Contract

Phillip Gaines Kansas City ChiefsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have signed third-round draft pick Phillip Gaines.

The cornerback out of Rice became the third of the Chiefs’ six draft picks to sign their contracts when he agreed to a deal Thursday. Sixth-round picks Zach Fulton and Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, both offensive lineman, had already signed their contracts.

Terms of the contracts have not been disclosed.

That leaves only defensive end Dee Ford, the No. 23 overall pick, fourth-rounder De’Anthony Thomas and fifth-round pick Aaron Murray to sign their contracts.

Gaines played in 52 games for Rice, intercepting four passes and piling up a school-record 38 passes defensed. He served as a captain for the Owls his final two seasons.

Peyton Manning Promises More ‘Omaha!’ Shouts

Peyton-Manning-OmahaPeyton Manning came to Omaha to show the city some love in return for the love it showed him during the NFL playoffs and Super Bowl.

Manning was the featured speaker at the B’nai B’rith sports banquet Thursday night. He promised the crowd of 1,200 he’ll keep shouting “Omaha!” at the line of scrimmage, just as he famously did during the Denver Broncos’ run to the Super Bowl.

Before the banquet, the Omaha Chamber of Commerce presented a check for almost $70,000 to Manning’s foundation. Local businesses donated for every pre-snap “Omaha!” Manning shouted.

Manning said he’s received suggestions from other cities, states, businesses and websites urging him to call their names at the line.

Manning said, “I am here to tell you I am sticking with Omaha.”

Obama Plans Conference on Youth Sports Concussions

ConcussionWASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is planning to host a White House summit on youth sports safety and concussions later this month.

The May 29 conference will include athletes, parents, coaches, experts and other interested parties.

Obama has expressed concern about concussions in sports. He said if he had a son, he’d “have to think long and hard” before letting him play football.

The White House says at the conference, there will be new commitments from the public and private sectors to research sports-related concussions and to raise awareness on how to identify, treat and prevent them.

softball_bat_glove_ball_homeplateThe North Platte Lady Bulldogs softball team will be hosting a one-day youth softball camp.

North Platte Bulldogs Boys Track & Field Team Qualifies 10 for State, Girls Send Four

The North Platte Bulldogs boys and girls track & field teams competed in the A-2 District Meet at Omaha Bryan High School on Wednesday and combined to qualify 14 athletes for the state meet.

The North Platte boys finished fourth overall as a team with 67 points. Millard North won the district with 147 points, Omaha Burke was second with 95.5, and Lincoln Southeast placed third with 71.5. The Lady Dawgs placed sixth out of the eight schools competing. North Platte scored 33 points in the meet. Lincoln Pius X won the girls meet with 149 points, Millard North finished second with 130, and Omaha Burke rounded out the top three with 96 points.

North Platte Bulldogs Boys Track & FieldThe Bulldogs boys were led by three district champions and two double qualifiers in the meet. Senior Evan Lamphear continued his dominant season by going 14 feet in the Pole Vault to place first. The Dawgs qualified two more pole vaulters with sophomore Kylan Rhodes placing second and junior Branden Hansen tying for fourth. The second district champion on the day was Chase Hohnholt in the Discus Throw. The senior threw 152-0 to win the meet and advance to state. North Platte added a second discus thrower at state as junior Trevor Lee placed fourth. The third district champion is Nebraska’s Gatorade Cross Country Runner of the Year, Wyatt McGuire. McGuire placed first in the 1600 Meter Run with a time of 4:31.82.

The two double qualifiers for North Platte are McGuire in the 1600 Meter Run and the 3200 Meter Run and junior Jacob Zimbelman. Zimbelman placed fourth in the Long Jump and qualified with three other Dawgs in the 400 Meter Relay. The rest of the relay team consists of junior Austin Chitty, freshman Trevon Weaver and senior Alec Wesslund. The NPHS Boys Track twitter account was very complimentary of the two double qualifiers.

North Platte Bulldogs Girls Track & Field The North Platte Bulldogs girls track team qualified four individuals for the state meet, all in field events. Senior Tori Kurth led the way by tying for first in the Pole Vault with a height of 9-2. Junior Rachel Kosmacek will join her in that event after tying for fourth. Junior Kaitlynn Harvey was also crowned as a district champion by placing first in the Long Jump. Harvey recorded a jump of 16-3.25. Sophomore Hope Wilke was the final qualifier for North Platte. Wilke didn’t place in the top four in the Discus Throw at districts but the NSAA allows additional qualifiers in Class A if they throw over 114′ 9″. The A-2 District qualified four additional girls in the Discus Throw, including Wilke. She finished sixth in the district with a personal record throw of 120 feet 3 inches.

Eagles Let Martinez Go Because of Failed Physical

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Former Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez’s free-agent contract with the Philadelphia Eagles has been voided because he failed a physical.

His father, Casey Martinez, wrote in an email to The Associated Press on Wednesday that Taylor continues to struggle with a left-foot injury that dates to early last season. Casey Martinez said the Eagles let Taylor go after evaluating his medical file from Nebraska and taking X-rays of the foot.

Taylor Martinez is considering surgery and hopes to get another opportunity with an NFL team.

The Eagles signed Martinez as an undrafted free agent Sunday. He played in only four games his senior season because of the injury. He left Nebraska as the program’s career leader in total offense, passing yards, career touchdown passes and starts by a quarterback.
