California Chrome Made 3-5 Favorite for Preakness

California Chrome Kentucky DerbyBALTIMORE (AP) — Kentucky Derby winner California Chrome has been made the heavy 3-5 favorite for the Preakness Stakes, and he drew a favorable post position in the 10-horse field.

Trained by Art Sherman and ridden by Victor Espinoza, California Chrome will break from the No. 3 post, which has produced 10 winners in the previous 138 runnings of the 1 3/16-mile race.

Social Inclusion was the 5-1 second choice of new Pimlico oddsmaker Keith Feustle. The colt drew the No. 8 post on Wednesday.

Bayern and Ride On Curlin are the co-third choices at 10-1. Bayern is trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, who will be seeking a sixth Preakness win. Ride On Curlin finished seventh in the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago.

Sanders Welcomes Selection of Rookie in 2nd Round

DenverBroncosENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Emmanuel Sanders is still learning his way around town. That’s not stopping him from putting out a big welcome mat for rookie wide receiver Cody Latimer.

Sanders, who signed a three-year, $15 million free agent deal in Denver less than two months ago, said he’s glad the Broncos drafted a wide receiver in the second round last weekend.

Both Sanders and Latimer are expected to replace some of what Eric Decker brought to the Broncos before leaving for the New York Jets in free agency.

At 5-foot-11 and 185 pounds, Sanders brings speed, separation and versatility to the mix and could replace Decker’s 87 catches.

At a shade under 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, Latimer has a mix of size, speed and strength in the mold of Denver’s Demaryius Thomas.

Moustakas Leads Royals to 3-2 Win over Rockies

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Much-maligned Mike Moustakas hit a three-run double in the second inning, and Jason Vargas and the Kansas City bullpen made the meager offense work in a 3-2 victory Wednesday over the Colorado Rockies for a two-game sweep.

Vargas (4-1) did not allow a hit until the fourth inning and did not allow a run until Drew Stubbs belted a two-run homer to left in the seventh that made things interesting.

Louis Coleman got the Royals out of the inning without any more damage, and Kelvin Herrera worked a perfect eighth before Greg Holland survived a shaky ninth for his 10th save.

Jhoulys Chacin (1-1) allowed the three runs that Moustakas drove in but otherwise pitched well for Colorado. He allowed seven hits and a walk over six gritty innings.

Delany: Unionizing Wrong Way for Athletes to go

Big-Ten-LogoROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) — Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany insists he is all for empowering college athletes and improving conditions for them.

He’s just as adamant that forming a union is not the way to go, and he thinks the public agrees with him on that.

Delany says “70 percent of the people” are against athletes unionizing and are against pay for play. He says the public does not want to see college programs operating like minor league franchises.

Delany spoke Wednesday after wrapping up two days of meetings with Big Ten athletic and academic administrators.

The discussions focused on the conference’s expansion east with Maryland and Rutgers along with the reform and restructuring of the college landscape as a potential game-changing decision on unionizing looms in the background.

NPCC Coach’s ‘Gatorade Bath’ to be Shown on America’s Funniest Home Videos on May 18

Dick Thurin Gatorade Fail NPCC Knights BasketballIn his 48 years of coaching high school and college basketball, North Platte Community College Lady Knights basketball coach Dick Thurin never imagined that he would gain national recognition for a play he never even saw coming.

It was March 2013. Caught up in the excitement of winning the district competition and advancing to nationals, three of Thurin’s players decided to celebrate the victory by dousing their beloved coach with a bucket of ice water. The celebration, however, did not go exactly as planned.

The water was tossed and, with barely a moment to brace for impact, Thurin found himself face down on the slick wood floor.

“When football players celebrate wins with ‘Gatorade baths’ they are usually outside on grass, but we happened to be inside on a basketball court,” he said. “Water on gym floors is never a good thing.”

The laughter and excitement of the players and crowd quickly turned to gasps and hushed silence as Thurin struggled to his feet in the slippery puddle. After assuring everyone that he was fine, the coach dried off and continued the celebration.

His slip on the court might have quickly faded to a distant memory had it not been for Thurin’s granddaughter, who was in the stands filming the entire event.

“She put it up on Facebook and YouTube and before we knew it, it was everywhere,” Thurin said. “When she and my son told me it ‘went viral’ I didn’t even know what that meant. I thought it was something bad.”

As the viewer count grew, the clip of the “Gatorade Fail” soon captured the attention of news media across the county.

“They showed it on ESPN, the Today Show, Fox News, and even Jimmy Kimmel Live,” Thurin said. “It was just everywhere.”

Always a good sport, Coach Thurin played along and laughed with the folks who were laughing at him.

“Once I realized it wasn’t bad publicity for the college I was fine with it,” he said. “It really was funny.”

It was so funny, in fact, that when his son submitted the clip to America’s Funniest Home Videos, they agreed. The video is expected to be shown this Sunday, May 18, at 6 p.m. CT on ABC. (The clip can also be viewed at https://www.mpcc.edu/videos)

As he prepares for another round in the spotlight, Thurin still isn’t taking himself too seriously.

“I just have to laugh about the whole thing,” he said. “I tell people, ‘If you want to be famous in that manner, just do something stupid.’”

Shyquinn Dix of Stamford Academy Signs Letter of Intent with Knights

Shyquin Dix NPCC KnightsNorth Platte- The North Platte Community College men’s basketball team announced Tuesday the signing of Stamford Academy’s Shyquinn Dix to a Letter of Intent to play basketball with the Knights next year as the second member of the 2014 signing class. Dix comes to North Platte from Stamford, Conn. the same hometown of recently graduated Tim Simmons.

“Shyquinn is a speedy guard with great court awareness,” said coach Barry Woods. “He has the ability to create his own shot off the dribble and create scoring opportunities for his teammates.”

Dix was a First-Team Westchester Independent Athletic Association (W.I.A.A.) selection as senior in which he averaged 25 points, six rebounds and six assists.

“We are excited to welcome Shyquinn to the Knights basketball program,” said head coach Kevin O’Connor. “We are excited with what he brings to the table and can’t wait to get him on campus this fall.”

The 6’1″ 175 pound combo guard scored 30 points five times this season including a high of 38 points. Dix also holds the school record with 43 points scored in a game.

“A true leader by nature Shy led his team to the W.I.A.A (Westchester Independent Athletic Association) Championship and was named Tournament MVP.”

Shields Sharp as Royals Turn Back Rockies 5-1

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — James Shields cooled down hot-hitting Colorado over seven sharp innings, Lorenzo Cain and Salvador Perez both homered and the Kansas City Royals beat the Rockies 5-1 on Tuesday night.

The only run Shields allowed came on an RBI single by Justin Morneau (mohr-NOH’) in the fourth inning. Shields followed it up by retiring the final 10 batters he faced, striking out the side in the sixth inning and fanning Troy Tulowitzki (too-loh-WIT’-skee) for the 1,500th strikeout of his career.

Alcides Escobar added a pair of RBIs, and relievers Wade Davis and Aaron Crow wrapped up the win for the Royals.

Franklin Morales gave up four of the five runs for the Rockies. He allowed eight hits and four walks without a strikeout in five innings, needing 99 pitches just to get that far.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska linebacker Josh Banderas and a member of the men’s track team face felony charges in connection with the thefts of seven bicycles on campus.

Sgt. Douglas Petersen said Tuesday that university police received a report of two individuals using bolt cutters to remove bikes from racks and loading the bikes into a pickup about 5 p.m. Monday. Lincoln police stopped the pickup near campus and arrested Banderas and Lucas Keifer.

Banderas and Keifer are charged with possession of burglary tools and theft by unlawful taking. Each was released on a $3,500 bond.

The athletic department said in a statement that administrators and coaches are aware of the incident and have no comment.

Petersen said Banderas and Keifer were cooperative, with one telling an officer stealing the bikes was “bone-headed.”
